My Cloth Diapering Essentials

I was asked what my MUST HAVE cloth diapering essentials are and here they are!
You can cloth diaper without these things. You can also cloth diaper with even more accessories if you’d like. There's really no cut and dry way to approach cloth diapering. Over the years these are things that I've realized I enjoy having around.

My personal favorite MUST HAVES are wetbags, cloth safe diaper cream, and hemp inserts/boosters. I could technically do without the other accessories like diaper pods, snappi, bandie band, cloth wipes, diaper sprayer, etc.
•WETBAGS are my favorite! I use them for everything. I’ll be able to use them after I’m done cloth diapering.
•CLOTH SAFE DIAPER CREAM. I’m currently loving LuSa!
•30 DIAPER CHANGES. That’s my sweet spot for a one size stash. 30 diapers per child (I’m currently diaper 2 children). For a newborn stash I prefer 45 diaper changes because my babies went through so many in those early stages... I’m talking 15-20 diapers a day!
•FLATS. This isn’t an accessory but it is one of my essentials. I love flats. From stretchy flats, to muslin flats, to bamboo flats. They’re my favorite diaper! They’re so versatile and they can be used for so many things outside of diapering.
•HEMP INSERTS AS BOOSTERS. I don’t use inserts by themselves but I do like to use them as boosters. I like geffen hemp inserts and thirsties hemp inserts. They’re both great quality and have a good resale value!
•BASKETS. I use them to store clean diapers. It’s not a great option if you want to use your diapers evenly, but it’s an easy way to store diapers.
•HANGING WETBAG. I store my dirty diapers in hanging wetbags.
•DIAPER PODS. These are okay. I like them but they’re not necessary. I don’t leave the house often so I don’t use it much.
•CLOTH WIPES. While I don’t currently use 100% cloth wipes I do like to keep them around! Nothing grabs poop better than a cloth wipe. Seriously.
•SNAPPI & BANDIE BAND. These are closure options for things like flats and prefolds. I use them with my flats occasionally.
•DIAPER SPRAYER. I don’t currently use one but I miss it lol. This is a luxury item and isn’t necessary to cloth diaper successfully. I highly recommend reading the comments section. (Hopefully KZbin doesn’t take the comments section away).

I’m not sure stretchy flats have a huge benefit over other flats. It’s softer (imo) and gives a way better fit when you’re wrapping it around your baby.. I find that it’s pretty absorbent but I don’t have specific numbers lol. Maybe I can do absorbency testing

How long do you have to change your girls? My daughter is a front wetter and she pees soooo much and I use prefolds and flats but I feel like I have to change her like every other hours because the diaper doesn’t have enough absorbency. When using flats in a toddler do you need to use more than one? I have bamboo and birdseye cotton but have only used them on younger children (don't have my own kid yet).

For Scarlett I just use 1. She’s more of a moderate wetter. My 3rd baby, Hazel, was a really heavy wetter. She outpeed everything! I love smart bottoms hemp prefolds paired with hemp inserts for her. So I think it’ll just depend on the baby you're diapering. Like willow used to use 2 flats at night and now I’m using just 1 on her since she’s not waking as much in the night to eat.

What AIO would you recommend for a newborn who is born between 7 & 8 pounds? I’m planning on doing flats, prefolds, and covers but I also want to have some AIO for out and about or family to use. I cloth diapered with my son but not in the newborn stage so I really don’t know what’s best. I don’t have a big budget either.

Susi Kuczka that what I use on mine. 6.5 months in with no stinks or stains. I tried a plant based and it just didn’t get them clean enough 🤷‍♀️

My diapers seem fine by mixing tide powder with free/clear liquid. So far haven't experienced build up or stink in my diapers. I dont care for the scent in tide powder so I use both powder tide (put the powder directly in wash).. then I put the liquid free clear (either 7th generation or tide brand) in the dispenser. But I also hand prewash all my diapers with a sprayer.

I have used All Free and Clear in 2016 and it did not personally work for us. For the most part I do follow their detergent guide. I’ve tried a bunch of detergents in the past to test out if things would work for us and ALL F/C just wasn’t one of them.

I used free and clean for about 4 months and my diapers got really bad ammonia build up. I had to strip them which is not good for diapers.

marcia martinez Was it the All brand? I accidentally used it a couple times when I first bought my diapers. I looked at the detergent index on Fluff Love University, and decided to go with Tide Free & Gentle. However, I use so much of it (following Fluff Love’s instructions) that I just purchased regular (powder) Tide. I’ve not yet used it, so I’m hoping the fragrance doesn’t irritate my baby’s skin, and that the double rinse will help. I use All Free & Clear on everything else around here, so I am nervous about the fragrance.
