I used Koolance's UV-Green Coolant for 6.5 years in a Dual bay / Dual Pump, multi-tube setup and it worked fine the whole time. All I had to do every 3 to 4 months was add a bit more coolant to top it off. Never gave me any issues and was easy to clean when I was done with the use of that PC and repurposed the pumps, connectors and tubes into another system that I"m still using today. So the Laing Pumps can last 7+ years. They're great!

Reminds me of an issue I had with a fish tank water pump as a teenager. After a while it had stopped working, maybe 12 months, and cleaned out all the filters etc. to no avail. Was at a store buying a new pump, and the salesman to his credit opened the box & fully disassembled the new unit. Similar to the pumps in this video, there was a magnetised part in the centre, which I didn't know you could remove & clean. Went home & gave the pump a good clean, getting cotton buds in there, and after that it ran like new, for many years after that.

This again shows how important cleaning your system is. The most underrated part of computer maintainance. I have seen so many people throw away their PC, just because it would get extremely slow, then start crashing and shutting off. Guess what: Air cooler filled up with dust. Or PSU's totally clogged up with dust. And no, having a clean home does *NOT* prevent dust buildup in you system. Especially the tiny heatsinks in laptops are super vulnerable to this.

Thanny There are people who live and breathe air cooled Porsches, and some who prefer the newer ones. The air cooled fans are doing it because they know it's harder, and they accept those challenges. We who use fancy fluids accept those challenges too. We don't disagree distilled water is easier, but we just like what we like. Hopefully that explains things.

@@TheFlatronify I have never cleaned my loop, and it's been 24/7 since 2012. The only real change was removing the graphics cards in 2015, when one of them died, and I got a AIO unit to replace them. Didn't need to drain the loop (paper towels and a bit of care were all I needed). I had intended to get a block to put it back in the loop, but it was working well enough without it. I have a silver coil to inhibit microbial growth, so there's no algae. I certainly wouldn't drink the water in there now, but it's still clear. My reservoir is a 5.25" double bay unit, so I can top it off when it needs it from the outside while the system is running. I've done that perhaps twice a year. On the coming weekend, I will be disassembling it completely and building a new system into the existing case, so it will have been just shy of six years of almost 24/7 operation.
@TrueThanny
@TrueThanny 5 жыл бұрын
@@thegirthquake8574 I have no problem with that. I just don't want people who are considering water cooling (even if it's just AIO's) to think this problem is inherent to the process. It's not. It's a consequence of going for appearance over function. If you use just distilled water, and stay away from DDC pumps (D5's are cooled by the water they pump, while DDC units tend to overheat), there is essentially no maintenance involved with custom loop water cooling, other than looking once or twice per year to see that your reservoir is reasonably full.

@Sevalecan
@Sevalecan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I started water cooling and as I learned and had to solve problems that you wouldn't imagine to start out with, people started saying "This is why I don't water cool". That's nice. Air cooling is lame and I'm learning, overcoming a challenge is fun. Right now my D5 is pushing about half the volume it did when I bought it, didn't have biocide or anti corrosive additives at first.. Already cleaned the GPU and CPU block, probably going to again (this time with a Dremel and soft bristles), and expect I need to clean the pump too. Also concerned about plasticizer from the rads. But if I learn enough, theoretically in the future I could slap a watercooling system together with enough attention to detail and avoid any major, early problems. The downside is definitely having your system down for the cleaning, at least for me. Takes time and I get withdrawal.

3:36 I'm pretty sure that it's not a nylon bearing but a ceramic ball, because nylon a.k.a. polyamid (melting point at around 220 °C) would just melt and wear down immediately even when bathed in and cooled with water from the rotor spinning at 1800 to 5000 RPM.

@JayzTwoCents -- Hi Jay, I thought you might find this interesting. It's something I've read and heard many times over recent years, but I bow down to your knowledge with industry contacts and info the public isn't privy to, so correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is accurate. ◘ Alphacool like EK actually has their own manufacturing of the Laing D5 pumps, meaning they have the right to modify the design _*within reason_ and their choice of materials, hence why some companies like Alphacool and EK have their own versions that are only compatible with their tops and res-combos. I've read a lot of stuff regarding Alphacools pumps over the past few years as I'm water cooling nerd like yourself, and there are compelling stats and evidence to show Alphacool's pumps have a higher than average failure rate, especially with the VP655 v1.0 (I don't know if that's the type you're using in this video, might be worth checking though). Whether it be cheaper materials or a slight manufacturing defect, I don't know, but the poor reviews and RMAs compared to all other brands show there _is_ some sort of issue.
@Chrispy4949
@Chrispy4949 5 жыл бұрын

Like every other Chinese manufacturer, they have tiers of their product. If you go to a place like Huaqiangbei, SZ, and you talk to someone about buying their product in bulk, they will have between 3, 5, or even 10 different grades. And if you're ordering enough, you can specify your grade. (For the most common example....) You want to buy a fake Rolex? Well, you can get on of pot metal case and plastic gears, or pot metal case and pot metal gears, or stainless case and pot metal gears, or ..... Or a really good copy that only someone at a jeweler could discern from a real one. All made by the same manufacturer, all at a different price. It isn't binning, they actually manufacturer different grades. If you went to Laing, and wanted them to make you a pump to your specs, they'd offer you several different options. This is how almost all manufacturing in China works. Either you choose one of their tiers, or if you're a large enough customer and want to pay for it, every single aspect/component of a product can be specified.

4:12 Its called a rotor. The Impellor is the black part on the top that moves the fluid. Wet rotor pump would be the best explanation for the type of pump this is. The white ball is ceramic not nylon. If you look inside the rotor from the back you can see the other "cup" part of the bearing. It has 4 slits in it to allow the pumped fluid to enter and lubricate the two surfaces, this is why you should never run one dry as whatever it is pumping is also the lubricant. Also, when putting one back together don't just let the magnetic force it snap the two parts together. I have broken a d5 doing this! Ceramic does not like shock loads.

I have an situation I've never ran into while trying to run the EK-Quantum Kinetic TBE 200 D5 PWM D-RGB - Plexi (incl. pump). The motor does work, but it seems quite weak as it appears the liquid is not completely cycling through the whole loop. I do see liquid spinning in the reservoir, but weakly. The PSU I'm using is the EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2, 80+ TITANIUM with the ECO mode OFF. Also connected to the PSU are the normal 24 pin, dual 8 pin CPU, dual 8-pin CPU, 1 sata 6-pin & 1 peripheral 6 pin cable. I'm not sure why this is happening as the rest of the hardware such as the video card, cpu, leds and OS are working fine off the PSU. When I first put together the loop and performed the 24 hour water test, I used an EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GT, 80 Plus Gold 750W, but I just had the 24 pin cable shorted and the same exact 1 peripheral 6-pin cable using the same molex socket. This worked like a champ and the motor was working perfectly and the liquid cycled through the loop like it should. I cannot use the 750 watt PSU because the system I have uses: NZXT H710i case Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master motherboard PSU: Rzyen 9 5950X 128 GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro Ram GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 OC extensive 12w NZXT LED strips and fan led & controllers as well as EKWB 5w led cabling. 3 - 120mm NZXT Hue2 RGB fans on EKWB PE360 radiator (front intake) 2 - 140mm NZXT Hue2 RGB fans on EKWB Collstream CE 280 radiator (top exhaust) 1 - 140 mm NZXT Hue 2 RGB fan (rear - exhaust) PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2, 80+ TITANIUM Can you offer any guidance on what I should look for when I troubleshoot the power issue for the D5 motor?

This is my first loop so I did decide to go with soft tubing for now and when I decide to make the leap to hard line it shouldn't cost much more than $100 USD to do so. I have various fittings coming. Compression, 90 degree rotary, T, ball valve, male to male, plugs, I think that's it for fittings. I have an EX240 (white) radiator, system prep (Primochill) and some premix clear coolant (I eventually want to change to Primochill Vue) coming also. Everything is XSPC, except the system prep. Thanks to you @JayzTwoCents I put together an organized checklist and it wasn't too difficult to make sure I ordered everything I needed. If you noticed a lot of "likes" on older liquid cooling videos lately, that was probably me. Picturing and planning the loop visually inside my case helped A LOT with what fittings I might need. The loop is mostly for aesthetics and I'm anxious, nervous and excited all at the same time about finally doing this.

Wait a minute, didn't we already have this conversation? I mean literally, what the fu$k did we miss the first, second, third time around! If you wanna keep running your goop shmoo through your system, then by all means, rejoice during every clean up! Dude, it's like asking to get kicked in the nuts and then acting all surprised when it actually happens.?! Hello, knock knock, anybody there?

Hey Jayz, we've been using this type of BLDC motor in the aquarium industry for quite some time. Yes, I can confirm that it is never good to leave them idle for too long with any fluid present, especially on low power motors with limited starting torque. It doesn't take a lot of gunk to get the impeller stuck as you found out. Second, permanent magnets (cheaper ones especially) tend to deteriorate over time and sitting idle, immersed in fluid can and does warp them. Any of us who run lots of DC pumps in our tanks long enough have to replace a swollen impeller assembly that is out-of-round. The first sign is increased vibration and noise. The good news is the D5 use all stainless impeller assemblies with expoxy seal (well designed), so a swollen impeller won't be an issue. This is an issue with the cheapo Chinese ones you can buy off of eBay or AliExpress

@JayzTwoCents Kinda glad this happened so you could make this video. I was tinkering with the idea of designing a custom loop for my build because I have not purchased a cooler yet. So this info is greatly appreciated for future reference. Good work and looking out as always Jay.

This can happen with DDC pumps as well. I had it happen to mine about 2 years or so ago. I was running just distilled water with a silver kills coil (no anti-corrosion additive) with copper blocks. One day I noticed my pump had stopped running and was making that weird noise like it was trying to spin but couldn't. Took the entire loop apart to discover nearly everything in the loop had developed some kind of sandpaper-like (in that it was rather rough and hard to get off) scale/coating on it, including the impeller and where the bearing rests. Put some elbow grease into it and cleaned everything out as best I could, replaced some stuff (tubing, fittings I couldn't get cleaned, etc.) and the pump ran like new again. Still using it to this day. Of course now I use Mayhems X1 (with a little non-pastel dye) and haven't had any issues since. Also want to say that Jay ultimately you were my inspiration to switch over to hard tubing. Absolutely love the lack of plasticizer buildup and cloudy tubing I always got with soft tube. Plus it just looks so much nicer. Really enjoy the entertaining and informative videos, keep it up man!

Awesome video with almost perfect timing. Had my ekwb d5 pump fail just last week, after only 2,5 years. Fortunately it miracle-healed itself after a few days so I didn't have to drain my freshly filled loop again (pain in the ass, no easily accessible drain because no space for it -.-). But now that I have seen that you can actually take the impeller of without damaging the pump, I will go for a thorough cleaning of my d5 the next time I disassemble my loop. Thanks Jay =)

I'm doing a build with a pwm pump but when given 12v, ground and with and without a 5v signal the pump just pulses! liquid is readily available, no issue with heat, power is provided the same as here, from an external psu. It moves the liquid about 1 cm vertically up the output tube but does nothing else. Is the pump broken? Can anyone help?
Are Distro Plates worth it for watercooling?
