Back when I use to play. I use to drop my tongue and growl while putting air into the mouth pice. New Orleans trumpet players were good at it.

Benny's growling on the trumpet the 2nd time through the melody. You change the shape of your throat. You can also do a "flutter tongue" technique to get a similar sound, but it's more pronounced than what I'm hearing here. I suspect folks are going to start pulling out "Heart-Shaped Box" at jam sessions now. This video has really blown up.

Just remember that most Jazz "standards" were originally popular songs from that era, a lot of musicals (My Favorite Things for example) and just familiar music that jazz groups played in their own style. It's all about the communication between members of the group
