Brushes are such a mysterious cloudy haze of whitenoise candy that it's always been hard for me to convert drumming technique to brush technique. The way you teach here is very effective. The shapes drawn out along side traditional explanation was helpful to me. Also appreciate highlighting the value of certain grooves that easily convert to various other applications

He’s actually not teaching here, but rather, giving a sampling of several different brush patterns that can be learned from his book. So while this is an excellent display of brushwork, it’s also an advertisement for his book. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, but just saying. PS, “whitenoise candy” is a GREAT description... somebody ought to use that as a band name…

What an incredibly useful video, brushes seem like the one area in drumming where it is so personal no one can really teach it to you - but this seems like a wonderful starting point. Going to try some of these, at least until I find my own voice!

brushes are some of the hardest forms of percussion. i can play things like yyz or spain by corea but cant play a single bit of a ballad with brushes. Just never learned it and even tho im into that music still to this day i have never owned a pair of standard brushes. Played in band (sax) but always took over the kit when we were just fucking around and had access to that stuf but never really played it. Its the most foreign thing ive ever played in drumming.

for some reason im having a hard time telling what you are doing in first pattern. Tho the view is great, it too can make it hard to discern a movement. Both hand are hitting quarter notes? And you say the right hits the “ride” pattern. I can’t tell if two hits or one is happening for that… are you ddoing the “uh-one… uh-three” triplet, double stroke? amazing content, thank you!
@ineedstuff8286
@ineedstuff8286 6 ай бұрын
also.. you show the pattern on page 44.. it has left doing whatever (quarters, eights, etc) and the right alternating with “and”, or “ee”, etc. It looks like you are not alternating hands in the following demo. Instead using right to reinforce, or accent the left. Just want to understand this stuff in detail… I am finally tackling this technique “for real” 😂💪 Have a good day🙏🏻

Jazz brushes do I need? What are these ones called?
@drummersmrc
@drummersmrc Жыл бұрын
I use the Vicfirth HB heritage brushes (purple) since the handles are rubber and I don't get an annoying click sound from brushes with hard plastic handles. The ones in the video are Steve Gadd which also have rubber handles, but I straighten out the wire ends. I'm also a big proponent of Remo Fiberskyn heads. I'll be posting jazz brushes videos from the upcoming Chicago Drum Show. I hope this helps. Ciao!

These videos rule and I will be ordering the book. Question: What is the pattern on Miles Davis - Milestone - Billy Boy? kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJrOd6qca8yrgMU. (If you can listen to this on Spotify or somewhere better quality than this KZbin video, it's worth it). When I do a ride pattern on the brushes at fast tempos it often sounds too aggressive. But Philly here is just playing so damn smoothly while also playing fast. It almost sounds like a shaker. How is he doing this? All students of Jazz hail the great Philly Joe Jones!
