Hi Marc, I think the "rambling" is good. You give insight into concepts, which is important in conceptualizing the topic, before you give playing examples. The old saying; "teach a man to fish and ..." Just playing without teaching the how and why is not really educational. I appreciate your approach to teaching, which is really teaching, instead of just showing off - like so many, too many, other instructional clips that don't really serve a purpose. You're a real fine teacher. Best regards.

I think you have made a good point here. Rhythm is more important to getting a groove than the exact nodes of a particular scale or mode. Well done

I love Steve's articles on jazz improvisation. This is my teaching approach as well. Many students try to invent their own phrases which are usually scales or arpeggios. But good melodic phrases at high tempos must have been practiced before and in your fingers without thinking. Many players and teachers forget how they learned, usually by osmosis from learning solos - ie the jazz language. Scales alone aren't music but so many students want to focus on that. Great video!

You're right. Thanks for the comment. I usually prepare something in "point form" and ramble around it. (-:

Wow. Great question. Honestly, I have never thought of the breathing aspect while playing. You bring up an interesting point. :-)

Hi Marc, All those lessons are great and I'm following that without any bigger problem (but I've been playing for 25 years now). Timing is not an issue, choosing of right tones nether. And by this video I'm very impressed by your singing. I have a pretty good ear (developed through years, I can anticipate my next tone ... ok not always). Everyone says, I read about it: if you sing by practicing, your solos will be better, but my voice range is from B to A, so not even 1 octave. This solo your are playing/singing/swinging here is beautiful, made on the spot, I suppose. Do you have any idea how could I make my voice range bigger .. or are you just born with that? Kind regards.

Hello Igor. Thanks for the comment. To be honest: I really don't know! I never trained my voice, and I would like to believe that most of what I sing is in "falsetto" (that very airy sound, not full voice, almost like a high-pitch whisper). You could probably ask a voice coach. But, on the other hand, you don't really have to make a sound with your voice for the process to work. You can sing "in your mind". You know? M-A

jazzguitarlessonsnet Thx Marc. Yes, I'm singing in my head, but I read so often that you have to sing aloud. I attended once, years ago, a master class of Joe Pass, in Rotterdam. He asked all students, on the stage, first to sing a solo. And they did it: Some of them almost like Chet Baker. It remains thus my handicap. And I really envy you on your ability to do that. About your lessons: Had you made it 20 years ago... I wouldn't have been loosing a lot of time on working on no-musical approach to guitar. Thanks again. I remain following your videos and practicing... and I'm getting better because of your lessons. (And I was not sooo very bad :) : ). I thought. Hm. Kind regards, Igor

Thanks for the great lesson. Please consider removing the sub-title where it covers the neck and finger board of your guitar.

constructive criticism: more preparation on specifics of what you wish to communicate. you tend to ramble, and are sluggish to get to the point. (for me) this vid could have been more usefull if it was less than 2 mins.
