This interview was a complete joy. Jonathan has not only an extraordinary facility in the Swing Era style, particularly of Allan Reuss and Charlie Christian, but also an extremely nuanced understanding of the fine details of the genre, which were probably largely intuitive with most of its practitioners back in the day. A beautiful, informative conversation -- many thanks!

Great interview, thank you. I'm attempting to learn guitar to better understand and appreciate the music as a listener. Jonathan's insights into how the guitar functioned in the context of "swing era jazz" are fascinating. And his own music is pretty cool.

There are very few people who actually distill their art to the degree Jonathan has and when those people are interviewed, they usually aren't able to communicate the core of the matter because the interviewer is usually too busy vicariously parading his own sophistication by sharing similar observations and trying to show himself as one in the know. Joe is humble and asks great questions, letting Jonathan fill in the blanks. Great job on both parts.

Saw Jonathan last Saturday at Boulevard Music, Culver City. Since then I've been going down a JS rabbit hole and enjoying every second of it. He does a lot of combo work but the album I like most is Pick it and Play it: 15 Songs for Solo Guitar. Thanks for this interview.

When Johnathan is talking about his guitar lesson the audio cut out: the guitarist he's mentioning is John Reynolds. Awesome guitarist with an even better humor. Lots of history in his playing as well. Awesome interview!
