Jazz Jackrabbit is a Jump&Run/Platformer game. It was made and Published by Epic Games. It came out in 1994.
The game is shareware and that means you can download episode 1 for free. (Just search for it on google)
You know, there was Super Mario and there was Sonic and there was Rayman and I'm pretty sure a hell of a lot other jump and runs. But I always liked Jazz Jackrabbit. Probably because I was that "shoot some shit guy" instead of "jump on enemy heads guy" ^^
Could also be because I really like rabbits and even have 2 rabbits as pets here ;)
However...I think the game can somehow be described as a mix between Sonic and Turrican. It is a pretty fast game but you also have to shoot a lot. There even is an option to slow down the game if it is too fast for you.
Also this game has a bonus mini-game (which can be seen in the video) in which you play in third person mode in a 3D environment. It is not spectacular but atleast something different. You run around on streets and have to collect as many gems as possible.
There are a lot of levels in this game, some of them have red gems to open a secret level and If I remember correctly every episode has a Boss fight at the end.
But most importantly is that the soundtrack of the game is what finally did it for me. Even today I listen to some of the tracks and it is only surpassed by the soundtrack of its own sequel JJ2.
Definately a great game and hey, it has a save function. That has to be mentioned because only few jump and runs had save functions. And it saves you a lot of frustration ;)
All in all a great game but the only problem I saw was the low resolution. The graphics are good thats not the problem. But I mean you can only see about 3 meters what is in front of you and this can be very annoying as the game tends to throw enemies right in your face and you have to have the reflexes of a panther to react to that.
