You should watch XCeleste's explanation video for this one. Every little thing has either a cultural meaning or is something they've been critisized for, like Suga's Snowwhite shirt, V's glasses, the drawings, the rabbit in the moon etc. It's honestly fascinating how much symbolism they've managed to fit into one mv. (btw, loved the Andrew Quartet 😄👍)

Love the Jazz version of Idol. The video graphics reminded me of Peter Max (Yellow Submarine) as well. Lots of Korean culture in this video (a response to those who said they had forgotten where they were from). One example is the rabbit in the moon. Here in most western cultures we see a man in the moon. In Korea (and other east Asian cultures) it is a rabbit with a mortar and pestle. In the scene with the rabbit in the moon, Jin sings the line, "What you keep talking babbling about" and the (adlib?, refrain?, call-back?) "talkie, talkie". Talkie sounds very similar to the Korean word for rabbit, 토끼 [tokki].

Loved the jazz interlude! The song is a response to being told/accused they were too Western for getting American awards etc. so they made a clap back that isn’t negative but talks about loving themselves that is a Korean/African blend with them wearing custom South African made suits in traditional African patterns, African dance moves and beats, Korean traditional clothes and dance moves, it’s another genius level song that just sounds like a generic catchy pop song. Every image in the MV means something even the clothing they are mocked for like Suga being the Snow White for his fair skin wearing a snowy white sweater, JHope and being called lanky wearing bugs bunny, Tae for dressing like an old man so he wears suspenders etc. They are owning who they are and it’s fantastically empowering and still is a sassy clap back. How?.?

I know that probably 10 000 people have said this already but in order to understand some of the more complex references and imagery without me writing a full essay about it 😄(and learn a fun thing or two in the process), I really, really, REALLY recommend giving the series Explained by a Korean on DKDKTV's channel a chance. They can be very insightful when it comes to dissecting cultural elements and in that regard this song is just a gold mine! For example, did you know the rabbit is considered to be a symbol of immortality? The rabbit hole never ends😉P.S. I loved that you actually brought the saxophone in, I always thought IDOL is just made for this channel 🥰

Ooh please react to the explanation video! You should also know that Fake Love mv came out right before this one. That video was epic and 100% real, but a lot of critics judged it and said everything was fake and CGI. So for IDOL, a song about loving who you are in the face of hate, they used as much CGI as humanly possible but with style. They put a lot of cultural references in it, so that’s why you should watch the explanation because it just makes you appreciate it a lot more Also it’s one of the biggest flexes for have a whole crowd scream at the top of their lungs “YOU CAN’T STOP ME LOVING MYSELF” No does it like BTS 💜

Aaaah high priest Andrew of church BTS, another banger of a track to react to and a great reaction from you: I especially love it when you're inspired enough to play along! Woohoo! I really love this video too with all the traditional Korean elements: they're wearing hanbok, the dancing lions, the rabbit in the moon... love some Korean pride in these MVs! Thank you, I'd love to know what Caitlin thinks of this song too!

Honestly, I agree with the comments that it's good to hit this song later down the rabbit hole, because it gains a lot of meaning from knowing their history. A lot in it is a response to critiques or dismissive comments made about them, from Kookie's hair color to V's glasses to their art and use of filters in Vlives. However, if I remember correctly, even they didn't understand what the CGI shark was for. (Someone has told you about BTS reacting to their own MVs, right? Here's the one for IDOL - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ-1eZmnYsysqdE ) In a lot of ways, putting this reaction after the Cyphers makes a lot of sense, 'cause it's a song in the same mold. Your jazz version of IDOL is amazing, too! I hope you do more of it, because - the changeover is fascinating, and it sounds really good. It can go hang out with the jazz cover of DOPE! (Well, sorta jazz cover? Jazz remix? I dunno what'd you call it except it made me glee... kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4qxZ5tuhrd0sMk ) Thanks for the cool reaction!

Yeees finally! 🥳🥳 About the music and the dance, they combine African and Korean rhythms, instruments and patterns (it includes the clothes too!). This video (that I recommended to you because of 'ON`) explain some of the African roots: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5yzeKigr99gfbs I can't find now a video of traditional Korean dancers analyzing the dance. About the video, once I've read that it was an answer to the critics about how jumbled and colorful their videos were, how much computer animation they used, also about Namjoon using filters, etc. I'm so happy that you are heading towards MMA 2018 🥰🥰🥰

I was trying to figure out how to explain Idol and just realized part of why I love it as much as I do! It reminds me of a thing that's common in the queer community: when people try to make us ashamed of who we are, we often respond by doubling down. Oh, you think I should feel bad about being gay? I'm just gonna add another rainbow every time you say it. You think I should be afraid people will know I'm trans? I'm going to get up in front of thousands of people and talk about it. Attack me all you want - you can't make me hate who I am. For a lot of us, learning to love ourselves was a hard fight, and we won, and no one can take that away. And that's it, that's the message of Idol right there. Every single detail in the video refers to something they've been criticized for and have chosen to embrace. 😁 The live MMA stage is so good. One of the critiques Idol responds to is that they sold out to the west / forgot they were Korean. The song itself is very deliberately Korean, and so is the video - but the live stage takes that up several notches. Jimin even got a national award for promoting Korean culture. 😁
