Hey Julian, I used to be a professional (classical) musician most of my life. I’ve been to a professional music school, got private lessons, studied music science at a university here in Germany,.. I changed my profession to Management couple of years ago but my heart will forever beat for music, so I continued playing on my own :) Playing jazz always seemed hard to me as a classical player so listening to your video and your calm and patient way of explaining helped me a lot. This video seems like the beginning of a new era to me. I will start applying your Tipps and technic. I’m happy I’ve found your video and that you didn’t start explaining everything about music from ground zero so people that have general knowledge like me can go further. Thanks a lot and much love from musician to musician ☺️👋🏼❤️ Hita

ok, this video provides a lot of good information but because it has so many views I feel compelled to critique the hell out of it. First off I really wish the video was titled "jazz piano harmony explained" not "jazz piano explained." This is because anything claiming to serve as an overview of jazz music that doesn't devote a single second of its 20 min runtime to discussing rhythm is doing a disservice to the music. most of the harmonic concepts of jazz while brilliant are really just re-purposings of 19th century classical music concepts. Not to disparage it, the re-application of these concepts in jazz is nothing short of genius but it's really in the rhythm concepts of the music that its true novelty is found. The swing feel, the syncopation, the moving of the emphasis to the 2 + 4 and the off beats. This is really what makes the music so special and you don't discuss any of it in the video. As someone who went to jazz school this is a problem in general with the institutionalizing of the music and any music that's an oral/aural tradition. You have to focus on what can be turned into theory, what's evaluable and what can be put in a book. The rhythmic aspects of jazz are much harder to do this with than the harmonic aspects, which is why rhythm gets neglected in jazz education and why so many jazz students sound bad. Well not bad per say, you can't point to anything they're doing as wrong but it doesn't swing, and doesn't sound like the masters because they're learning chord scale theory with no rhythmic language. It's also worth pointing out that this favouring of harmony over rhythm is essentially an overvaluing of the european contributions to the music and an undervaluing of the African ones, which is a common thread in western culture that we perpetuate at our own peril. Which leads me to chord scale theory. Starting the concept of improvising at "this scale for this chord" also removes an essential element that makes jazz jazz. The blues. You're starting people at Bill Evans when you should be starting them at Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton and Earl Hines. Again by saying "play this scale over this chord" instead of "learn phrases and melodies from the masters and apply it to chord changes." You're removing the oral/aural tradition from the music which is a huge mistake if you want to sound good. Finally this is a smaller bone to pick but I think it's a mistake to think of the default 1 chord in jazz as a major 7 or in minor a minor major 7. Major 7's really aren't that commonly played until you get to guys like bill evans. In my opinion the major 6 is a lot more common and should be seen as the default 1 chord with the major 7 being another option.

I know nothing about reading or music composition however I particularly like Chet Baker and specifically Pacific Jazz. Could you upload a video on Pacific Jazz please and anyone recommend me a more laid back Jazz musician than Chet? Thanks

Wow, this is so helpful! I'm just at the point in my playing where I've been diving more into 7th chords, extensions, and modal scales over those chords; but in 20 minutes you explained it way better and more clearly than any of my music theory books! :)
