You don't have to worry about melody because they are singing it, you are basically playing solo piano. 5:00 demonstration 8:15 establish that time feel. 12:10 medium swing tune. 14:00 ballad. 17:10 up tempo piece. 21:10 voicings. For the most part, rootless voicings for the right hand and for the left hand, bass notes and approaching bass notes. Recommendation: Work on your left hand 24:25 during the bass line, on your right hand play the rootles voicing or some sort of inversion, maybe just shells. 27:10 adding some triton substitution. For more advance... 35:20 some runs. 37:00 passing chords, half step approaches. You need to break down the components in order to put them into tunes, if you are learning arrangements by copying kind of what some one is doing you are never really truly going to learn jazz. I'm not a native speaker so if you want to correct some of my writing let me know, it'll help me a lot.

I can't believe how great this lesson is. I have been trying to learn how to do this for the last 5 years.I have studied free lessons on U-tube and bought many lessons. My technique has improved tremendously, but I still couldn't do it. With this tutorial, I think I can actually accompany a singer or myself with a couple of months practice. Thank-you thank-you Jazz Piano School.

When comping should I stay below the melody? Sorry if you already answered in the video.

Hey @canefan17: that's a great question! There's no hard fast rule persay, and it varies depending on the circumstance of who you are comping for. For example, it's easier to comp below the melody for a trumpet or alto sax as opposed to a tenor sax or trombone, just because of the nature of the instrument ranges. However, it is generally a good idea to avoid always playing the melody note in your comping voicings as it can get redundant (unless you are comping for a singer who asks you to play the melody in the top note of their voicing for their reference). Hope this helps!
