Over the course of putting this piece together, I listened to many versions of "Davenport Blues," and whenever I found something I particularly liked, I'd try to find a way to fit it in. I won't list all the inspirations, but the version that got me started is still the one I like the best, and that's the one by Gil Evans, with Johnny Coles playing the trumpet solo.
I'm grateful to Michael Pollak for his encouragement, and to Martin Ventura for giving me a different perspective on Mr. Beiderbecke's tune from 1925.
