This is a superb series Allan - we need more reviews of quality, often little known/obscure titles for us to explore. Looking forward to part 3 !!

That was a lot of fun. I second tracking down as many of those original Modes as you can. I’m particularly fond of The Marty Paich Trio from 1957.

Thanks for this, great concept. I'm always on the lookout for 'new' jazz to check out. There's so many '10 greatest jazz LP' lists on YT usually pretty much the same list. There's a couple on your list that I'll be checking out.
@TenMinuteRecordReviews17 сағат бұрын
@@leerogers9949 Thanks. I’ve never been able to do a “10 Greatest” type of video as I can’t see the point of ranking art.
@leerogers994917 сағат бұрын
@TenMinuteRecordReviews Indeed. That kind of thing is great for beginners I guess. I'd love to see a video about some 'under the radar' bebop albums, just to see if there's anything I've missed in that genre. If you ever feel like doing one 😉
@TenMinuteRecordReviews10 сағат бұрын
@@leerogers9949 Not my greatest strength, bebop, but I’m remedying that. Partly limited by the fact that in the greatest years of that sub genre, it was mainly singles… if anything was released at all due to the recording ban. So it’s tough to talk about albums as such.
@leerogers994910 сағат бұрын
@@TenMinuteRecordReviews Yeah most bebop albums are compilations. Oh well, I'll just have to carry on with my own research. Looking forward to your next 'under the radar' video.

Great recommendations, Allan. I checked out the Joanne Grauer Trio, and I love it. And I completely agree that the Moodsville albums are excellent. The Hampton Hawes albums are great as well. Speaking of which...his Playin' in the Yard is another forgotten gem, and also one that could fit into the jazz for under $20 category. I got a mint copy for under $20. His Fender Rhodes playing is excellent, and "De De" is worth the price of admission.
@TenMinuteRecordReviews3 сағат бұрын
Thanks! I don't know that one at all, and am a huge Fender Rhodes fan. Appreciate the tip.
@Imagination_livesСағат бұрын
@@TenMinuteRecordReviews You're very welcome! It is a live album from 1973, and his Rhodes style is, in my opinion, better than that of most jazz players who made the switch to electric.

Whoops! The Herb Geller record was actually released in 1957, before Lorraine's death. My mistake. But, it's still a great record!

Where do you uncover these great 10" records? I have a few, but I guess the NY metro markets are not easy to find at a reasonable price . Nice episode.
@TenMinuteRecordReviews2 сағат бұрын
Thank you! It’s always worth a dig, but typically you have to look online. There are a few sellers who have a reasonable inventory. Possibly more on the west coast, as the WC labels (Contemporary, Pacific, Atlantic, Capitol) put out a lot of good 10 inch jazz records in the early ‘50s. Of the East Coast labels, hard to find the BNs, but I’ve had some success with Prestige, Bethlehem and Atlantic. I can’t think of any on Columbia or RCA, but there must have been some.

Thank you. It’s Episode 358, which actually aired in October 2023... not "a few months ago" as my foggy brain informed me.

Interesting group of titles! I have the Hawes sessions and the Frank Wess one and other of his Prestige dates. Wess could do no wrong! Do you know “Two at the Top” with Johnny Coles?

I don’t but now I’m curious. He was great on Dorothy Ashby’s records as well.

My understanding is that Eva Diana was (Mode Records) Red Clyde's wife. Can anyone confirm?
@TenMinuteRecordReviews11 сағат бұрын
I hadn’t heard that, but if so it would make a lot of sense. It’s not easy to find much background on Red himself.

OMG, get that painting off the fireplace. Art over fireplace should only be above a mantle. Yes, I know it is fake fire but, it looks nuts. Especially hanging over the carbon on the brick.
