That drop/version of Sonny Bravo's "Tighten Up" was sweet. Columbia released it as a single too. I think it was Chris {johncoltrane68} that sent me that Dorothy Ashby album. It is so good. I remember reading that the album was voted as one of the best jazz harpist albums of all time. You got some good ones John. Excellent update and groovin' drops~ Rob/Boston

Those 90s Blue Note comps were a big part of my jazz discovery journey back in the day. Also the great Blaxploitation CD series pit out by Global.
@6inchpianist3 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Those Blaxploitation comps did a lot of the hard work in me discovering those records. Fantastic comps. Still play them now.

Some great needle drops there John. I'm in Brisbane atm and have visted a few record shops. Picked up a second hand live LP recording of 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' 'Cannonball' Adderley which is a great gateway from Soul to Jazz.

Great video! Love Dorothy Ashby & Patrice Rushen! And the Leon sounds amazing. I'm new to the VC. Posted my first video about 6 weeks ago. I didn't get into Jazz until the 90s as well. I have a video about my journey into jazz posted. 🙂Just found your channel and subbed to it. Look forward to your next video. Cheers

What a nice selection. That Patrice Rushen clip sounds good. Will keep my eye open for that one. On the other hand, I have that (and a couple of others) David Axelrod album. I think that mix of jazz and soul is my sweet spot in this genre too, and there's loads of it to be had. Those Blue Note CD comps are fantastic, probably because the mix of artists provide loads of variety for someone who isn't so steeped in jazz. St. Germain is excellent - that first track pulled me in.

The first version of Tighten Up I heard was an impromptu mess around take by R.E.M., which was released as a flexidisc. I think it was a bonus track on the CD of Reckoning I had. It was years before I heard the original. I've got a coverless copy of the Blue Brazil comp in vinyl. It's a great one.

Wow that’s a killer stack of finds. Dorothy Ashby is a must, even though I normally object to the high prices charged by the majors; I’ll make an exception here ! That Capitol Rare album is worth it for that live Marlena Shaw track. I think it’s just an amazing performance! Cheers John.

Hi Andy. I usually stay away from expensive reissues too but I’m never going to find originals of some of these so I’ve bitten the bullet. The Dorothy Ashby is well worth the money. Cheers!

St Germain. CD. 👍 How you doing John? That first one you showed I saw reviewed in record collector and thought it looked interesting. Cover looks like an Alice Coltrane one. On a week's A/L so sorting out a mess and having a clearout of some overspills. My problem has been buying £1 things I just grab without checking.

Great stuff, John. Get the Joe Henderson Power to the People reissue if you don’t have it already. 👌🏻 Hedley does know his easy listening music…

@@TheDigitalGramophone I suggested to Hedley doing an Easy Listening Pub Jukebox but he said he didn’t have any easy listening records. Really?

We on the same page, Blue Note/Capitol cds are awesome they include many killer grooves. St. Germaine got it, Sonny Bravo also funky Latin grooves, not that common. Excellent….👏👏👏
