@lordbiscuitthetossable53522 жыл бұрын
The one limitation with the movies is that we have to keep the actors visually identifiable. This makes sense (every movie an actor is a marketing opportunity), but when can we predict an entire character's arc merely based on whom is playing them? Curiously, the one medium we can't *visually* see often has the most flexibility in portraying its characters. Even adaptations without actors will portray the most idealised version of the written character, a lot of the "less seemly" material left on the cutting room floor.

Howl is a competent Gilderoy Lockheart if he was from Wales. Howl's moving castle is a very interesting story. The book and the movie are very different but both were created by people who grew up during WW2 and used their different mediums to process the trauma in diametrically opposing ways. One used his medium to make sure no one forgets the horrors of war and the other used her medium to make a place for children to escape war. Both are very respectful of each other and the author of the book considers the book as how Sophie would tell the story and the movie as how Howl would tell the story. The movie has a more chill vibe while the book goes way more into the plot but I would recommend both.

My wife is a big Studio Ghibli film fan, I got her the books to read. She said the movie had key events that were the same and similar characters, but quite a bit was different.
@freshoffthehook904 Жыл бұрын
@@georgejones5019 Pardon me for going and writing an essay but I really like this book and literally, no one else I know will read it. The difference is really hard to explain to people who have not read the book. The movie has a semi-solid plot. I would describe the book's plot as more liquid? The book is about Sopie's personal journey to self-love but that change in mindset happens quietly while all these subplots for literally all the side characters are flying around and weaving together in interesting and unexpected but cohesive ways. Because Sophie is an unreliable narrator and it is easy to get sucked into her emotions and forget her perspective of herself and everything that is going on around her is skewed. It is only on subsequent rereadings, hindsight, and the ability to qazi self-reflect on how the emotions you resonate with are not the end all be all that you start to catch little bits of foreshadowing that registered subconsciously before making all the plot threads coming together feel impactful. It is messy and strangely both emotionally draining and cathartic. The seemingly disparate subplots shift Sophie's perception as she learns new things and deals with new people is really fascinating to watch unfold but also relies heavily on the book medium. In adapting it the focus shifted from Sophie's personal growth to romance, exploring the magic of the world, and dealing with the underlying trauma of war that made the artist and author create in the first place. A lot of the side characters were removed or several characters were condensed down to one character and their subplots were altered or dropped. Sophie and Howl both had a lot of rough edges softened so that the romance could be fast-tracked. A lot of the inner lives of the characters are displayed exclusively through visuals that are meant to be felt more than rationalized. Both book and movie have a throughline plot element that comes in and out of focus but is ultimately just the staging for the true emotional resolution. However, the throughline is changed so drastically that it feels like a completely new addition to the story. Kind of like putting new lenses in glasses. The lens adjusts the perspective and structurally it fills the same role, but at the end of the day, the lens does not matter nearly as much as what you can see with it. The book and movie have a very weird sort of emotional harmony that is informed by the plot but can never quite be captured by plot analysis. The movie is a marvel for the eyes and ears whereas the book is an emotional roller coaster and technical marvel that only gets better with every reread.

I feel like Diana Wynne Jones is one of the few authors I've encountered who truly does a bang-up job of having flawed protagonists that are actually sometimes quite unlikeable when first introduced, and yet successfully engaging us with them straight away, even before they start their journey towards character improvement...? Charmain Baker in the 3rd book in the series (House of Many Ways) is even more that type than Howl was, although she changes a lot more over the course of the novel. DWJ is also one of those authors (along with Lois McMaster Buhold) whose books never fail to repay re-reading. It frustrates me enormously that J.K. Rowling's works are so much more lauded and well-known than hers, even though to my mind they're FAR more derivative and banal. I had to come in here and say how proud of myself I was for guessing Robert Langdon! lol Honestly, the way you drew him is pretty much exactly how I pictured him reading the books!!! Absolutely loving these videos man, hoping for many more on this series!

The fact that he draws the whole character on one single layer is insane!

Except, he doesn't do that.

Howl's Moving Castle remains one of my favorite books from my childhood. While the Miyazaki film is fine, it's a far different creature than the novel, and I have a hard time seeing the novel in the film with the radical changes to some of the characters. For instance, I think novel Sophie would lose patience with movie Sophie and tell her to get over herself and move on with her life. It would be a very Dr Phil moment. I digress. Point I came to make was this version of Howl is a lot more like what I envisioned when I read the novel than what is on display in the Miyazaki film. Nicely done. Now if only someone could read the novel and give us a text accurate version of Calcifer. The movie one is cute, but that novel version would be wicked cool.

I really love this series Jazza! I immediately knew The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as soon as you started describing the character! I think you got her spot on as if you compare your drawing to the actresses that have played her the aesthetic is pretty damn close.

You should really really sketch the characters of Tolkien s works…. Not only because of the movies, and the old cartoon, but because there are actual sketches from Tolkien to compare as well

Love these videos. I think a Jazza vs AI would be an awesome video. Both get the same descriptions and see how close or different the final results are.

That's so creepy. I'm not a big reader, haven't read a book since I got out of school about 5 years ago. Last month I read Howl's moving castle and now I see this. Life is pretty crazy sometimes

Little tip for rendering jazza: for the shadows, maybe try shifting the tone from the original color to slightly more cool toned (ie if it is yellow, shift to oranger hue, if it's green, shift to bluer hue). Hope this could help! Your art is amazing and I'm always excited to see what you make next :)

The second one I thought was the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, what a good description. The third I thought was for sure the young Xavier from X-Men, lol. The third makes me need to go check out the original novel. Sounds Whacky.
