The original HeMan toy in the 80s came with a similar sword that was missing the rear half. You combined it with the opposite half of the sword that came with Skeletor, to complete the Sword of Power.

The dots on the back of the sword are for clipping to the other half of the sword which comes with Skeletor. Originally the storyline was going to be He-man and Skeletor battle over the sword because the sword opens Castle Grayskull. But they changed it to be He-mans sword. The toys were already though so half of the sword comes with He-man and half with Skeletor, and you insert it into the door on the Castle Grayskull playset to open it.

The pegs on the sword are meant to plug into the other half of the sword that skeletor has. This directly comes from the original version of he man were you fought over both Halves of the sword to control grayskull

Excellent job on He-Man. I recently bought the Coleco Sectaurs Pinsor and Battle Beetle from Ebay. I wasn't crazy about the original color scheme, so like you, I changed them. I used a matte black base coat. After it dried I used Testors color shift spray paint called "Purple Sunrise" on the top part of Battle Beetle's body and on Pinsor's torso. I very lightly brushed the color shift paint on Pinsor's biceps and his thighs. I also used the same method for Skulk and Trancula. However, I used Testors color shift spray paint called "Green Copper". They all turned out fantastic!

The sword actually comes in two pieces with Skeletor having the other half, that's why it looks odd. It's a weird holdover from the original toy concept that never really got used.
