Does tracing really help develop my drawing skils?
@emilylol55254 жыл бұрын
Kat D yes! it most definitely does. i started out tracing horses and eventually my brain just memorized the shape and whereabouts of it all. tracing is an amazing way to start out ✨
@franciscodanconia35514 жыл бұрын
@@Flumpfy I think it's probably a better idea when you first start out than trying to replicate something from memory or a picture. When you see a picture, your brain tries to project depth and motion onto it, and if you're tracing, it gives your brain references on how to achieve that effect. If you just start by trying to replicate, then your brain doesn't have any reference on how to achieve a representation of the depth and motion, so you'll often end up with weird proportions. I've been drawing stuff for at least 25 years now, and I will still do a trace or two of things that I've never attempted to draw before, or that are exceptionally complicated, before I start trying to draw them. It can be especially beneficial to trace if you trace it like you're sketching instead of just tracing the finished image, so if you find the building block shapes and draw them over what you're going to trace, then you trace details on top.
@medievalmayden4 жыл бұрын
Also there's an app called Artist's eye for Android that works way better and you can use any picture.
@bluetiger24684 жыл бұрын
@@Flumpfy I'd say that tracing is one of the very first things you do when learning how to draw, it does help you understand proportions, but having the drawing next to you and trying to redraw the picture that way, is better. Because, let's face it, practically anyone can trace. Trying to redraw a drawing without tracing helps you learn way more.

A lot of this could be remedied with implementing some system recognizable marks on a page (3 dots, a small shape. Something easy that is removable) that the AR can use to immediately anchor itself to. It would also help to include a recalibration option for the user to implement at will, rather than waiting for the AR to figure it out or constantly recalibrate itself.

There is potential here, but this is a classic case of style over substance when building an app. They opted for a flashy real-time AR projection when in reality they could've just put a "lock" button on the screen that would make the projected image stay in place and not wobble to avoid your hands. Lastly, just add something like "tripod strongly recommended" to the store page and there you have it, much more useful.

i tried this out for myself, and a few things Jazza didn’t mention, are: 1.) The camera on your phone will constantly go in and out of focus causing what you’re trying to trace to go blurry. 2.) They have this 3D bird character that shows up on your screen to give you tips, and as you try to draw, he constantly sits on top of your drawing so that you can’t see what you’re doing and there’s no way to get him to go away. 3.) If you don’t want to pay or can’t afford it, the free version only gives you one thing to draw and it’s a cartoon-y penguin. There are no other options, forcing you to have to pay in order to truly use the app. Aside from those, the app constantly crashed on me as well, and he was 100% right about the depth perception thing! I found myself constantly trying to look past my phone to see what i was trying to trace, only to realize i’d forgotten that the image isn’t actually on the paper lol This app has great intentions, but needs a whole lot of work and a whole lot of improvements before i could say it would be worth spending any money. I do have Jazzas app, and i’ve had it for years! It genuinely is a lot better than this and is a ton of fun!! I believe it’s only .99 or 2.00? It’s been awhile from the time of purchase, but i’m still using the app 5 years later haha

Try drawing a few points on the corners of the blank paper, so it knows how far away it is and how the camera moves

Interesting concept, cool video! Some ideas prompted by this video: Do a mural-type drawing using a small projector for tracing (so sort of like this, only you're augmenting reality the other way 'round; I'm actually blind in one eye so my depth perception is limited, but it never occurred to me that this would prove an issue to people while drawing. Could you try drawing with an eyepatch to find out how much you rely on stereo vision?

CopyDraw is a nice AR drawing program. You print out a #CopyDraw logo and tape it to your canvas or paper (or wall). That feature really helps keep your phone centered much better. As long as your phone doesn't auto-focus too much.

@@michellegan313 u don't really learn much from tracing tho, if u do it urself you think about the anatomy, the sketch, the basic shapes and so on while when tracing u just trace the lines and (most) don't even think anything of it

kenz art yeah. But if you trace you learn from it (unless well you do it too much and then it becomes a bad thing) but even i used to trace in the past After that i learned anatomy and how to do stuff

I left an absolutely scathing review of this on the app store and I stand by it. Sometimes I get "stuck" in a particular drawing and want to compare my drawing to the reference image. If you're in the same boat I'd recommend the free snapseed app and just open your image, then add the image as a double exposure. And it lets you warp the image if you took it at a bad angle or something. But *occasionally* SketchAR works kind of well and it's nice. Very rarely.

Haha that's so funny, I used this app not long ago and I ALSO pulled out a boom arm. Well, I dont have a boom arm, but I improvised one out of an accordion-like clamping desk lamp, a phone tripod and gaffer tape. Or GaffA teip, as we say in Norway. So now I would love to see you make Gazza - a sculpture/wall art/ street art/ some form of a Jazza but in Gaffa tape. Hehe. Love your videos!!

You should do a bottle dragon! Most people use smaller alcohol bottles and wrap the dragon around it. You could try to do a realistic dragon around a bigger bottle. At least I think that would be cool! Also love your art and creativity as well as your challenges! Keep up the good work!

It would be amazing if you could map out the paper yourself, like be able to select the dimensions of the paper and then the reference would go according to your custom surface and then you can lock it so that the picture would stay steady.

Even if you are a good drawing artist (freehand) a lightboard or projector saves a lot of time. But an art projector is very expensive and so are lightboards. The cheapest solution is tracing paper or an Etchr mirror but of course, they have limits. This app is a super cool idea and I hope the companies will find a way to correct the app so it will work. I would buy it in an instant.

When you was trying to track the larger image wasn't you supposed to press the circle button at the bottom the screen to "stamp" the image in 3D space? Either way, the app looks crap. I can stick a virtual AR stromtrooper on my desk right now, leave the room and return and it'll be exactly where I put it. I don't see why other apps that are likely using the same API would be so broken.
