Anyone thinking about quiet playing do yourself a favor and buy that setup.. evans db ones. I have played virtually many of the mesh heads, especially high end heads from Germany . These heads trigger fantastic also if your into electronics. You can also mic the kit with these and really sound great. The snare head is ingenious. Don’t need the snares on. I don’t have the cymbals since i been into this stuff a few years. So zildjians. But fir the money, get the evans. Nice job Von 🤟

Ron thanks so much for sharing your expertise! I'm glad you find the dB One drum heads helpful in your playing. I never thought about the triggering option but I bet they do sound good for that purpose! Always great to hear your perspective on things. See you at Jazz Drum School my friend 🤙

I still like your stress ball beater with a slightly muted drum head idea for the kick drum. I got a similar foam ball and flattened one side of the ball, which I think offers a slightly damper and quieter sound, while the rounded edge is more defined and punchy. I swivel the beater around to make an adjustment based on the situation and time of day, and it seems to be working well for me for now.

Those Symbols & high hat sound awesome. Not totally convinced that the heads would make the tone convincing enough for a small acoustic folk gig. But that second type of brush tone is cool. 😎 Might have to trade in my flats for a full sized kit with the dad One kit. 😎😎😎

Paul thanks for the comment and for watching! I agree, the cymbals are really a cut above. I'm not sure how the heads would sound on you kit but i"m playing a pretty small kit too on my Pearl Midtown. If you give them a try, let us know here. Keep swinging my friend 🤙

Thanks for the comment and for watching! Yes, that was a real surprise to me too later watching the video. The sound is there but the mic on my front resonant bass drum head didn't pick up it up so much. If I had miced it on the batter side, you would have heard what I heard when playing it. Sorry about that. The sound is really enough for effective practice. Keep swinging my friend 🤙

This video and your part 1 video have been very informative. I'm a rock/metal drummer who's recently got into trouble with my neighbours so am researching low volume alternatives. Do the cymbals still keep a comfortably low volume when you hit them a bit harder?
@jazzdrumschool
@jazzdrumschool 5 ай бұрын
Thanks David for sharing your experience and for the kind words! I'm really happy that my videos has helped you sort out the low volume approach to drum practice. We all here at my KZbin channel and Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/ share your feeling. We have to go through so much just play our instrument! The Evans cymbals are better than the Zildjian ones in my opinion. More sustain and feel more realistic. If you're going for maximum low volume though, I would suggest the Zildjian ones. I hope that helps and keep at it my friend🤙

You want Vic Firth Live wire for brushes for mesh heads as they have little balls on the end of the wires.

Thanks for sharing DJ! Great idea. I didn't even know these exist. Here's an affiliate link folk if you want to check them out. As always, thanks so much for supporting the channel: amzn.to/4cZMJAC The guage looks pretty thick. It says it's great for playing louder with brushes. Do you use them just for practice or for playing Jazz at gigs as well? They remind me of the old Jeff Hamilton signature Regal Tip brushes. Is it that the beads on the ends of the wires, move more smoothly over the mesh texture? Thanks again for sharing 🤙

My regular cymbals in video, I’m using a 20” Zildjian Kerope on the right and a 20” Zildjian K Constantinople Flat Ride on the left. I’m also using mixed 14” hi-hats, Top: K Constantinople, Bottom: K Custom Dry Keep swinging my friend 🤙

alright then, I heard them now... hmm, interesting, to me the tone sounds like some kind of plastic bucket in the rain, I remember we had this huge plastic bucket when there were extreme rains in the summer when I grew up and each time a drop fell this is the very sound it made! 😅 you turned on some memories from the 70s for me now! hah... - is nice but is different than one except a drum to sound exactly... As I wanna use them with the Evans Sensory Hybrid System it will not matter so much... what is the rebound like, I like it when my drum sticks bounce well and one can work with a lot of tricks on the snare drum, is that still possible with these on? thanks for getting back!
@jazzdrumschool
@jazzdrumschool 9 ай бұрын
Sounds like a fun memory! You can do rim shots and other snare drum sounds like a regular drum head but it's muted. Yes, think it's a great idea to use them with the Evans Sensory Hybrid System. Let us all know how it goes! Keep swinging my friend 🤙

I really enjoyed the video thank you. I'm a bit torn at the moment on what to do at home regarding a practice set up. Would you suggest this over the Tama Training Kit? Like everyone I'm after a kit which feels as close to an acoustic kit but low volume. I do have a pretty good e-kit but the mesh heads and rubber cymbals don't make me want to practice on them. Thanks!
@jazzdrumschool

Thanks for watching and for the question! I just checked out the Tama Training Kit. It's cool and sounds pretty good for a practice kit. For less money, I'd probably go with Evans heads and practice on full-sized drums. There's just a different feeling for me playing full-sized drums. The spacing, timing and feel are just different in my opinion. I hope that helps and keep swinging my friend 🤙

I would actually choose a combination of the 2! I would use the quiet setup for the kick and snare in video 1 and the toms and cymbals setup from video 2. Hope that helps and sorry for the delay in responding. 🤙

Great question! I actually like the drums setup in the first one more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmGpdHygmJ2Ho7c The Quiet Tone feels better for my practice. I think that the Evans dB One heads could really help out some drummers though so it's why I shared the video. Maybe mixing the Quiet Tone with the dB ONE heads on the toms would be the perfect setup. I like my kick drum set up in the first one more too. All that being said, I think that the Evans dB One cymbals are a cut above the Zildjian Low Volume cymbals. The tone and feel is more responsive and enjoyable to play for me. I hope that helps and keep swinging my friend 🤙
