Wayne Shorter, 82, is widely acknowledged as of jazz's most important composers, as well as one of its premier saxophonists. He's also one of its most original thinkers, whose inspirations can be short as one sentence or as broad as a musing about the nature of the universe. Jazz Night In America visits Shorter at his home in Los Angeles to talk with him about where his ideas come from. And we catch him as a featured soloist with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in a special career-spanning concert where band members devised special arrangements of his tunes.
3:18 - “Yes Or No”
14:14 - How Wayne deals with his own success
17:07 - “Contemplation”
24:14 - What it was like to arrange Wayne's tunes
26:24 - “Endangered Species”
Recorded May 16, 2015 @ Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center

Wynton didn't do too bad here! The guy on the piano was holding it down too!! Reminded me of McCoy Tyner with that left hand!! Great job by both of them!! Impressive playing!! Just what I needed

His solo on Contemplation means another virtuosity, like that of Louis Armstrong: the placement of the notes, the sound, the timing in the arrangement, the story: virtuosity is not about fast notes and runs, but about the here above. x

What Wayne has, as both a soloist and a composer, is the ability to fascinate, to open up the heart and the imagination of the listener, to take him on a journey of discovery. Whether a ballad or a burning tempo, whether screaming or in a soft whisper, he has the total intensity of focus that comes from courage and commitment (no ego, just being totally in the moment). He's enlightened - this is what so many experience in his music. It took decades for his genius to be fully recognized, whole new generations had to be born, but finally he's in his rightful place, recognized as one of the absolute all-time greats of jazz.

wayne sounds as if he is flying by from another planet, with the JLCO being pulled along in his slipstream - wayne is the centre, around which every sound revolves and resolves ❤️

6:30 is where absolute respect and admiration conjures up intense listening that could make you forget where you are and miss your cue.. (been there) His solo on "Yes or No" from "JuJu" is the best ever! Feed it into a computer and expect a perfect mathematical equation.

Some interesting things going on in "Endangered Species." I think Wayne cut his solo a bit short and the band wasn't ready to continue the arrangement. You can see Wayne point to Wynton (30:52), then Wynton points back as to say, 'keep going.' Through it all everyone stays cool and Carlos saves the day in taking an unexpected solo.

The latin arrangements on Endangered Species just killed it. I love the complicity between Carlos Henriquez and Wayne Shorter when the latter falls short of breath - and bass steps in to phrase out the rest of the idea.
