I was working in S. Korea in '89 and had to go to Tokyo to get my work visa renewed...while there, I saw that there was a group called The Special Quartet playing, which was comprised of DON CHERRY, DEWEY REDMAN, CHARLIE HADEN & PAUL MOTIAN! (3/4 of OLD AND NEW DREAMS!) of course I went!...cool small basement club in Roppongi (The Pit Inn)...I noticed I was one of the only (if not THE only) non Japanese person there, so between sets, I took a chance and went to the dressing room (basically a closet!) to say hello and perhaps get a photo...I was immediately welcomed by Don and Dewey...mentioned that I'd recently seen Dewey in Toronto w/ local soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett...he said.."ah, yes...Jane..." after chatting (Don was asking what I was doing here etc), I asked if it was possible for my wife to take a photo? (pre cel phone "selfie days"), Don said of course and told me to come in (as I said, it was a TINY space!) he positioned me on the bench, crammed in between him and Dewey and my wife took the photo...impossibly, my smile was bigger than my face!...I thanked them profusely and went to leave, when Don asked me if there was any particular song I'd like to hear?...shocked, I thought about it and replied "How about MOPTI?"...he smiled thoughtfully and said "I haven't played that in years..." I thanked them again and we went to our seats...during the set, when Don was at the piano, sure enough, he started playing MOPTI!...what a night (PS I got pics with Charlie and Paul as well, my expression exactly the same in each!)

This is the best Avant Garde I've heard in quite the while and it was so organic and authentic in it's depth with Grade A musicians in top form!!! Great visuals too from the wonderful backdrop of the roundabout below with the city skyline and the musicians soulful animations as they played with vigor......what a concert!!!

I'm 30 minutes into this and it just dawned on me. There's no piano or guitar - no chordal instrument. I still don't miss it. That's a tribute to everyone's playing but perhaps Scott's in particular. I wish rush hour around here moved at the tempo of the song. Brian Blade is magic - a delight to hear. Ron and Joshua play off each other so well. Love it.

Kathleen Alfonso listen to the original band - it’s fantastic and soulful music. They perform the best version ever of Ornett’s “Lonely Woman” - 1977

The slow blues toward the end shows one of Brian's influences was definitely Elvin Jones.When it speeds back up, plenty of Elvin there as well, with Brian's own touch of course.

Interesting how I"ve always thought that Old and New Dreams was THE greatest of tribute bands. How many tribute bands have a tribute band done for them ??? (Don't know of another example…). I saw them 3 days (daZe!) in a row at Hop Singhs Los Angeles (Marina Del Rey)in 1980 or 1981. Still one of my greatest memories. (Other than seeing the original 4tet (OC,DC,CH,BH) during the "In All Languages" tour in 1987…)

Was that the same tour in which he did an acoustic set, an electric set, and then a combo set? I heard that in Boston. Terrible venue - we had stand or sit on the floor, and they showed up way late. I'm grateful to have heard the original quartet, though.
@seanconlon24082 жыл бұрын
@@kfwkfw1 I'm way late to the party here, but I believe the show you saw was the only time that the Quartet and Prime Time played together on the tour. I also believe it was a piece written especially for the 2 groups. I saw the show at Town Hall in New York (the only time I saw Ornette), and they only played 2 sets, separately.
