With 87 I'll be delighted to wake up breathing and being able to lift a spoon to my mouth. Playing "Blues Up And Down" will not be on the menu.Guys like Frank Wess are blessed with talent, the ability to work hard, longevity, stamina and good health. There were many like him in the jazz community who were such creative until old age: Eubie Blake (1887-1983), Benny Waters (1902-1998), Hank Jones (1918-2010), Benny Carter (1907-2003), Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) and many more.

I am 78 and happy just to wake up in the morning. Frank Wess is one of my favorite tenor and flute players for many years. The best.

Kudos to Mr Robinson for being able to follow Mr Wess and Frank was obviously digging Scott’s blowin - that’s a whole mess o’ tenor right there! Also, kudos to Mr Lushtak for being able to follow both of those monsters - nice! I’ve got a real affinity for Wess, as one of my first albums was ‘Two Franks Please’ with Frank Foster and of course their work with the classic Basie Band. Thanks @jazzpictures , that was great!

Used to play this tune when I was a lot younger and found it a real finger-buster on tenor sax. Amazing that Frank Wess can make it sound so easy at age 87 and have command of his horn.

sooory scott didnt come close all these players seem to do is real off as many chords and scales as they can ,, frank attacked it in a more melodic way and never lost sight of the tune ,, lesson for every player

Maybe Scott chose to do his solo based off not wanting to repeat the same style as Frank. Musically he could be trying to give something different to the audience at this specific moment after following Frank. I've listened to hundreds of hours of Frank and Scott and I can tell you first hand that Scott can play very melodically with the same language as any player. I respect that his solo may not have resonated with you as much as Frank's, but you can't say that Scott lost sight of the tune as he just approached it with different ideas. If you transcribe you can hear that he is doing a lot of diminished stuff as well as shifting ideas around intervalic-ally. Best!

Or maybe that's just what Scott Hears, some guys just hear out of the chord changes, I'm sick of people being judgemental in jazz music. If you are honest and play what you feel and what you want then you are doing the right thing and it does not matter what anyone's opinion on your playing is.
