An absolute giant of Jazz. Saw him and said hello as he walked on stage at the Suntory Jazz festival in Japan in the mid 1980s. Had a press card from a Tokyo community radio station and was at the side of the stage. Sonny's music has given me so much pleasure and joy . . and I'm here to personally thank him for it. Love you Sonny. Your music will live on and on and on. What a legacy! And, of course, thanks Jazz Video Guy for putting this wonderful collage together to celebrate Sonny's 94th.

My sincere thanks to Sonny. I grew up listening to his beautiful sound and imaginative playing. Now, some sixty-odd years later I still draw enormous pleasure from his music. I hope he is aware of how much he is loved.

Many people don’t talk about how amazing (mid to late period) Sonny Rollins was. He was a powerhouse!! Extremely high-level of melodic invention! He just pulled the perfect melody right out of the air, constantly. Streams of consciousness.

Wasn’t it under the bridge? At the end of East River Park?
@JazzVideoGuy4 ай бұрын
No, on the Williamsburg Bridge
@Osnosis4 ай бұрын
@@JazzVideoGuy not to hurt your feelings, but the BillybergBridge goes over the East River Park (on the Manhattan side). In the past, you had access to the underside, which had big echo/reverb. I suspect that’s where Rollins practiced, rather than going back to where the cars enter the bridge. But I don’t know if it’s ever been confirmed.

@@Osnosis I used to work with Sonny. I have produced many videos with him, nearly 100, as well as his website for twelve years. We talked about this, and he told me, when he lived in Brooklyn, he would walk to the Brooklyn entrance to the Williamsburg bridge and practice on the top level, not far from the roadway. Also there's a documentary film with Sonny from the late 60s, where he is seen practicing with Paul Jeffreys on the bridge in that very spot.

@@JazzVideoGuy a ha! Now it makes more sense, although I would bet the acoustics are still more impressive underneath. Could he see the bank whilst practicing? Either way, Sonny’s positivity has been a blessing to the jazz world - he experienced the dark side and came out into the light. Not easy to do.
