Really good tutorial! Season + tending once is definitely the easiest way to do it, but I did some thinking myself for when it's not the optimal season for plants, but you still want to farm them: So basically, to get 11 stress points out of season, one of the least complicated ways is with the friendly fruit fly to tend to the plants every growth stage. This might sound tedious, because the plant grows 6-7 days, but when you're farming on a server where there's always someone at the base for the fruit fly to be loaded, like on mine, it's not THAT bad. Then, you need to satisfy the watery needs of the plants once. Watering is kind off complicated because the water evaporates, but the absolute most times you have to water, for really high temperatures, plants that drink a lot and don't like summer, is 3 times per 10 of them on one farm plot (outside of summer or for plants other than pumpkins and eggplants, 2 waterings per plot of 10 should be enough). The only other not so invloved alternatives are fertilizing with compost wraps (Wormwood only) or glommer's goops (viable for only 1-3 farms I think). You can combo these strats, of course, but I believe 4x tending + 3x watering is the second best. That said, every plant likes either spring, autumn or both, so if you specialize on farming then, you can get enough seeds to make your desired plants later and you don't really have to care for those since you just want the 1 plant.

Nutrients aren't so hard to manage either, just throw in a few of the desired nutrient in the plot; I often find it easier to do then watering everytime. The good thing is, if you Tend, Water And Fertilize your plants, even if failing to do so a couple of times, you can grow them Offseason easily. You won't need to tend anymore once Lord of the Fruitflies is defeated.

So- I created a system for crop farming. A way to get giant crops easier. Your guide is great for what you must know, but for those who wish to take it to the extreme. Here you go- First, to explain nutrients. Nutrients are not lost from soil unless there is weeds. Don't let there be any and you will be good. Each crops consumes at least one, and produces the others. Tomatos are one of the few crops, the only other example that consume 2 nutrients. tomatos consume 1 unit of growth formula (Nutrient A from this point on) One unit of compost (Nutrient B from now on) And produces 2 units of manure (C from now on) Potatos produce 1 A 1 B and consume 2 C, so mixing it together is easy to balance the soil. You can get the same balance with pumpkins and watermelon- except they don't share a growing season, at all. So no giant crops, there ofor useless. Okay, watermelon + carrots then? that will work but only in spring specificaly.. Seems like you are going to need to fertilize yourself a lot? Well- no.. because each dragonfruit is going to cost you 16 poop each time it fully grows. Each. individual. crop. Not worth it- So, what if you do 3 dragonfruit, consuming 4 units of C, 3 garlic, 4 units of B, and 3 onion, 4 units of C. for balanced soil. This is all well and good but- three is less than four the minimum for the family perk. There for, not possible. So, here is what my system is build on to solve all those issues. I call it the rule of 12, each of the crops will have an arrow to signal how much it consumes in the gardeneer hat. And if you max out the nutrient content in the soil by pouring tons of fertalizer into it, just one time. But the soil can only hold so much, so by doing this you are limited to how much or what you can grow in it. can you grow 9 potatos and expect it all to be well fed? no- this is why its called the ruleof 12, nine potatos, will consume two units of C each, for a toltal of 18. You'd run out 2/3 of the way through. Plant it with two tomatos, or one garlic and one onion or pomagranate. And you can grow the crop just once- But, next harvest, you replenish the soil by growing something different in the same soil. there will be an abundance of A and B nutrient, so four garlic four onion, both consumes 16 points, producing 8 of each others type so their consumption is eight points. This, however, produces 16 points of C, producing more than 12 points of any type of nutrient is a bad thing as it goes over the cap. So nutrients get lost. So, plant it with exactly one dragonfruit- dropping 16 to just 12- precisely enough to fully restore the soil. And reducing the eight points of A and B, down to Six, because it generates 2 points of each. So each will consume up to half the soil nutrient content, while the potatos next cycle will consume all the C nutrient to replenish the other two nutrient's just enough for the replenishment cycle. Please leave a rely if you'd like to ask any questions or learn more ^_^
@shanelawrence74384 жыл бұрын
Some protencial combos are- 4 carrot 4 potato 1 corn, then 1 carrot 4 potato 4 corn. 4 carrot 1 potato 4 corn. For a combination of crops that with each cycle replenishes the soil partially, enough for this cycle to last and go on forever. assuming all other conditions are met, you will after three harvests get 21 carrot, 21 potato, 21 corn. You can replace corn with asparagus for a system that works during winter. You can also do the exact same numbers but replace them all with dragonfruit onion and garlic. This results in WAY higher protencial crop combinations

Great video. It’s important to understand that giant crops are in no way necessary and satisfying all the complex plant stressors is not necessary! However, one should also note that crops will take less time to grow with less plant stress, in addition to the extra yield. Going for this one crop + one seed is still pretty damn efficient though.

Crop combos is the second best for players who are too lazy to learn stuff but still want giant crops. If you have a crop combo, you don't need nutrients at all. You still have to water and tend at each stage, but you can either have a friendly fruit fly or a one man band and you have tended the crops, and just water once or twice each stage. Basically this is the formula: 1. Crop combo. 2. Get a friendly fruit fly to automate, or just play a pan flute or one man band which will automatically tend to all the plants in the area, but to this every stage. 3. Water once or twice each stage. 4. Boom! You got an easy giant crop.

When the update fully comes out, could you do a crop guide on how to grow out of season? Because by the sound of it you can grow any type of crop at any time of year now (including winter), but doing so with crops that are out of season adds +1-4 stress to the crop overall. The reason I ask this is because I don't want to have to worry about my crops every minute of every day even out of season. This means I can just till up a big ol' square of crop space somewhere near the base (like make base on the edge of an island and make the farm the entrance) so that whenever I come into or leave base I'm reminded of at least tending to them on the way out or watering them. I agree that now there's an incentive to grow crops better than before to increase their output, but I play a generally adventurous style and I'm not in base all that often. I much prefer the older crop system, perhaps someone will eventually make a mod that brings back the old crops or keeps current crop mods up to date. Bottom Line: I much prefer to afk crops as I've got better things to do like hunting for food. The crops are just a nice bonus for filler or veg IF I should run low. But my tendency to base near Cactus and make pig farms means I don't usually ever have food troubles.
@JazzysGames4 жыл бұрын
If you're growing crops out of season then I'd probably use the self-fertilizing crop combos that would normally give you giant crops. Either that or fertilize before you go. That'll take care of the nutrients which will compensate for the four stress points of being out of season and you could tend once for a seed. If you're just using crops as generic filler though then maybe you could just plant generic seeds.
@Jinnuksuk3 жыл бұрын
This takes a HUGE weight off my chest! I have a 4800+ days world with the original farming system sill intact when I realized feeding the dragon fruit to the bird yielded just one seed. Out of curiosity how do nutrients work? Do they take the amount listed per growth cycle (like from seed to fully grown), or per growth stage?
@JazzysGames4 жыл бұрын
As it currently stands each crop's nutrient consumption values represent the TOTAL value of nutrients consumed during the crop's growth. A plant that consumes two compost points can be fertilized with two rot or one compost.
@Dechuoubenii4 жыл бұрын
@@JazzysGames This is true but it is still important to mention that each crop consumes an amount of nutrient each time it grows one stage, and that each nutrient is caped at a 100 value in each tile. Orherwise one could think that for 9 crops consuming "2 compost points" in the same tile, you can just use 18 rot on the ground and get to other business, wich is not the case because of the nutrient cap and the growth stage consumption. You can help visualise all of it by saying that one nutrient "arrow" in the book equals 8%. Meaning 2% PER stage PER crop.
@JazzysGames4 жыл бұрын
@@Dechuoubenii Yeah, I'm a bit surprised they didn't revise the nutrient cap when they buffed the fertilizers. So if I'm understanding correctly then a fully-maxed nutrient pool would only provide 12 "arrows" of consumption before depleting. So that's like only 6 crops that have a 2-arrow consumption, and won't feed enough 4-arrow consumers for enough crops required for the familly stressor. So plant synergies would still be very important in maintaining the nutrient pool if we're not going to throw in tons of fertilizer as we go.
@Dechuoubenii4 жыл бұрын
@@JazzysGames That's it. You can look at it that way : a full tile (so 9 crops) of 2 arrow crops consumes 144 nutrients for the full growth, meaning you need to "refill" the tile with appropriate nutrient one time after 2 stages (also do consider that the two last stage are way shorter in time) as long as the tile is full at "seed" stage. Seems quite viable to me, just coming during small stage once to refill some nutrient. However with 4 arrow crops you need 288 nutrient so 72 per stage, meaning you will need to refill after every stage. Definitely to much. You can let one stage fail to get the nutrient however as 1 stress still produces giant crops. You can refill two times after sprout and small stage to get pretty even time split, or let the transition to small being stressful to get more time out of the base, at the price of staying in the base between the shorter last 2 phases to refill. You can consider mixing the two types (of the same nutrient) to get a tile consuming 48 nutrient per stage, pretty ideal for a one refill setup (you will need to double it on two tile to satisfy family needs of the 4 arrow crops however). So considering how cheap the nutrient refill are now that fertilizers have been buffed, it's definitely viable to grow only the crops you want in the proportion you want. Wether it's the ideal option seems to depend on very various personal factors at this point. Maybe people who don't want to take those numbers into consideration at all might prefer stamp down auto nutrient cycling setups even if they don't want part of the crops, wich I don't blame at all. But I feel like knowing the numbers can help you plan some good things if you know you will have to do several small trips back and forth from the base.
@Dechuoubenii4 жыл бұрын
@@JazzysGames Excuse me I just wat to emphasize one point a bit more because of your concern in your answer. The "constraint" is definitely the fact that you have to come back one or two times at relatively (but calculable) precise time to refertilize, not that you have to farm "tons of fertilizer to drop in", one super growth formula gives 160 nutrient, almost a full tile of 2 arrow crops, one bucket of poop (pretty great with the bone shard drop rate now at 100% on spoiled eels and big fish meat) 160 too. The same amount for compost needs 6.666 items "compost", so 6.66 rot + 6.666 grass for exemple. So it's rather efficient, the cost is very small considering this tile of 2 arrows crops will give you 25 veggie / fruit. The cost is the need to come back in base.

Thanks for this. I was getting headaches tryna figure out how to farm the foods without using all the foods on the birdcage now that its ruined and only gives 1 seed

that's just awesome, i was thinking about and you answered one of my questions, ok new crops mechanics, what about speedrunners? how are they going to manage the new method?

My biggest question is if you can remove the farm plot once it's been put on the ground? I, by mistake, placed my rigamajig instead of unselecting it and it's a mess

How can you play current worlds in the beta?
@JazzysGames4 жыл бұрын
I believe you copy your DoNotStarveTogether save folder and rename the copy to "DontStarveTogetherReturnOfThemBeta"

That means that as long as you can take care of 4 complete stress factors + 1 you'll always get a seed, that's not too bad I guess. So if I wanted to do an off-season plant, I could just water it and still get the seeds right?

Hey, relatively inexperienced player playing on PS4, question to y'all who seem to know what you are doing: how do you know what seed you have (to plant with like-crops)? Whenever I get a seed, it just says "seed".

Seeds you get from a harvest will have unique names. Once you plant those and research the first phase, the seeds will have their corresponding crop name.
