JB weld EXTREME HEAT review... its garbage

Don't take my word for it, check Amazon pictures and reviews. I have no idea what this would be good for...
Dear lord, the mixing nazis are here. I assure you I followed the directions to-a-T, I prepped the surface according to directions, I thoroughly mixed the product and applied it generously with a Popsicle stick. Maybe I used the wrong wood, probably should have used some bacote, or maybe I didnt hold my mouth open at just the right angle....
Video explains it all, I purchased this to repair a engine block that the previous owner left water in, it was cracked at the base and I had attempted to TIG weld it closed with stainless rods, it filled the hole but had hairline cracks that leaked. I wire brushed, etched with a carbide engraver and cleaned again; mixed up the putty and slathered it on, followed by applying a heater to help it do its thing. Today (24 hours later) I pressure tested the block to 10psi and it blew the patch apart.
Moral of the story: If it isn't covered in skulls and is known to the state of california to cause cancer... dont use it.

Years ago my dad threw a rod in his 18 wheeler. It knocked a chunk out of the block but it wasn't in the water jacket. He took JB Weld (regular) and glued the piece of block back in. I said it would never hold but he ran it for almost three years. Amazing..

Regular JB can take up to 500 degrees.If your block gets hotter than that you have bigger problems than a hole in the block.

That stuff works fine, the thing is you put way to much on it. You're supposed to drain the oil out of the engine if it even comes out slightly the JB weld won't cure properly..just put enough to fill in the crack and let it cure for about 2 days. Until it's really hard, I noticed it wasn't even fully Hardended when you touched it.

I have used JB weld steelstick epoxy putty stick to fill my cavities in my teeth. IT WORKS GREAT. They make a hydraulic version thats even white. The key is in the preparation you have to make sure your tooth is very clean and that there's no chance for bacteria living in the cavities to be alive which means peroxide and soaking in alcohol . you don't want to seal the bacteria up inside the tooth where it will just create pressure and causes pain. If you do it correctly it absolutely will hold for years. The other thing you need to take into account is your bite down after you put it in your tooth you must make sure you could bite down to create room for your teeth or it will be painful after curing

That stuff works great not the putty but the 500 degrees weld 5023 psi works it has to be don’t correctly and let it cure for 24 hours for a engine I would let it stand for 48 hours I repaired lots of engines and if don’t write it will last for ever.

A long while back, we used the Marine Weld to fill a corrosion hole between the exhaust and water jacket in a 6HP Evinrude. The block is cast aluminum. Ran the motor hundreds of hours. Made sure the area was clean using acetone, and was properly prepped, reamed the hole to about 3/16" and cleaned of corrosion to bare metal. Let it cure for a couple days. Ran the motor probably a couple hundred hours. Sold it and the new owner is still running it.

My first truck was a 70's chevy luv with a crack in the block. My dad and our neighbor who was a pilot chiseled chunks around the crack and let j-b weld set for a couple days. This was done in 1994 and the owner of the truck still drives it.

I ordered this product and am still waiting for it to arrive. In the mean time I had some regular JB quick weld on hand, so I used that on an exhaust pipe leak between my drivers and passenger seat. 700 miles later I crawled under the car with a bottle of windex and sprayed the repair area, while I had a hose hooked to the exhaust of my shop vac to pressurize the exhaust system. No leaks like before. Amazing JB quick weld held up on an exhaust pipe, since it is only rated for 450 degrees. I'm sure an exhaust manifold gets much hotter than the exhaust pipe though.

I cannot speak for the Extreme Heat. I have performed things just short of miracles with the original 2 part JB Weld. I was actually in the parts store yesterday, and the extreme heat almost lured me in, as I was needing to epoxy a hairline crack in the engine case on my Honda Foreman. I looked at the two products, and if I not mistaken, both the original and the "extreme heat" were rated for 550 degrees. I have not tried the extreme heat, but I have certainly had better luck with long set up original formula. I am inpatient, so the "quick weld" has lured me in a time or two, but the fixes did not last like the OG stuff. Thanks for making the video!

Your video shows the problem was the mechanic and not the product. JB Extreme should never be used were it comes into contact with water. This dissolve when it comes in contact with water. Should of used J-B weld twin tubes (8265S)

thats cast iron,u can braze it with a nickel rod.its extremely hard to weld cast metals.and grind a notch for full penetration.

i was going to braze it, however, directly behind the weld is a cylinder sleeve with brand new O-rings. I didnt want to risk damaging the seal and filling the crank with water and oil.

JB weld extreme heat is water soluble. That is why it didn't work for you. You are trying to seal a water leak with a substance that is water soluble.

We used to solder cracks in the blocks on the old cars. Soldering will not work on a mounting point like engine mount but will repair a crack from overheating.

I noticed that you had 15 lbs pressure on the cooling system, i don't know how old your case is but most of the older systems and likely the later ones as well don't need a pressurized system you should be able to run your case with no radiator cap at all, i could be mistaken this is just my experience.

I just spoke with the techs at JB Weld this week. I asked them about this Extreme heat product and they told me it dissolves if it comes into contact with water - WTF? I think had you used normal JB weld, your repair might have worked out okay. I honestly can't figure out what the purpose of the JB weld extreme heat product is. The website says it can be drilled, sanded, etc. and it's good for all sorts of things. But if you call the company, they will tell you if it comes into contact with any water, it will dissolve. If you check the product on the website, 30-40% of the Q&A is JB weld telling people "that won't work, it will dissolve if it comes into contact with water". What kind of silly product is it? I'd like to know what you could use it on where water isn't a potential risk.

Looked up the specs for marine weld, nearly 4000psi tensile stength is pretty decent. I have a hole between the exhaust port and coolant jacket of a petrol engine. (I've tried tig but its too narrow to get in there and I can't get the cylinder head hot enough to braze it, damn thing is designed to be a massive heat sink!) So my last resort is some kind of epoxy. what would you recommend?

XTR3MEBASS15 there is a company out there and"im not gonna look it up" but they make epoxy that's specific for fixing blocks. Google around, I believe they use some sort of orange lid or container. Pretty good shit. I believe cummins even supplies it for repairs.

Hvguy Next time you need to get the steel stick which is like a stick of putty that has the hardener in the core of it, you kneed it till it becomes one color and it will dry as hard as steel in 5 min and fully cured in 1 hour. That stuff gets extremely hard like steel. That stuff would definitely not blow out that easily.

We drove a car 10 miles to the mechanic. After sticking a pipe in a Broken off. Metal water hose connector on the intake manifold. It got to the mechanics 💯. For a more permanent repair. So it works

You should have used regular JBW for this- it's good up to 550F, is stronger, and bonds better. I get good results when plugging large holes by embedding glass cloth in it for added strength and helps bridge large gaps faster.

That is easy enough for a Mig Welder repair. I used JB weld on a Mercruiser Exhaust Manifold with a Water jacket on the other side. It lasted 3 minutes.

The first mistake this guy is making is he's trying to patch a pressure leak from the outside of a pressure vessel. That's like taking a tire with a hole in it and putting a patch on the outside, and wondering why it's still leaking and the patches bulging. If you're going to patch a leak in a pressure vessel the patch has to be on the inside so the pressure increases the strength of the patch, so for this JB weld patch to work he needs to apply it to the inside surface of the block. Applying it to the outside is only going to let the pressure go through the crack press against the patch material and push it away. He also needs to stop both ends of the crack from progressing so he needs to go to the furthest extreme of the crack and drill a hole on either end to stop it.

For future people his putty was still wet, press your finger nail 1cm in from the outside edge or the thickest area, it should leave no marks or indents, plus if this was to seal water its always going to have moisture effecting it This is water based so spraying it with water just ruined it o. Your leak test. you cant do this in this application but painting the inside and outside with enamel paint will seal it from water and oils etc making it last even longer. Had dynagrip extreme heat (jb weld bought their formula) last 11 years on a old 16hp briggs engine that threw a conrod, ground down with flapper disc, hit with blowtorch to remove oils, put some tig wire to bridge the large hole (imagine rebar in cement) and went to town dabbing this extreme high heat paste in the same spots filling air pockets Smacked with a hammer as hard as i could, approved it, rebuilt engine and its still there a few months ago when i replaced the the oilsplasher.

@@svetipetar278Yes. I used the JB weld original RED & BLACK tubes. Also a stainless steel brush and brake cleaner spray can are a must have. I sandwiched the epoxy with aluminum foil so it doesn't sag or bulge. You can sand the epoxy if you want to add more layers to it. The Aluminum foil can be peaked off when it all cures.

A cast block - cold stitch weld. But that’s a dying art along with those capable of doing it - old school. Personally I’d have cashed the crack, thoroughly cleaned it & then cleaned it again. Then used JB Weld. Whilst waiting for it to cure Id have been look for another engine. I have used it to repair two cracks in the top of my cylinder deck, which is aluminium, on my Suzuki Samurai race truck. It does have the benefit of having the cylinder head to hold it all down though. If you don’t use it properly - don’t call it rubbish.

Jb extreme heat works just fine as long as it's not exposed to lots of water like in the case of a cracked header. It is a 2 part system, usually you have to mix it beforehand.

The problem you have is that you didn't run the engine to allow the material to heat up and further cure... The material streghtens with heat and any areas exposed afterwards to can further add material.

I know to use antifreeze in everything and shut shit down when it's overheating . I have seen many cracked blocks and heads over the decades I have been fixing equipment. EVERYONE of them has been because of no antifreeze or overheating. Overheating cracks are almost always in the head or in gas engine cylinder walls block cracks are from not keeping antifreeze in the motor.

Did you do the fingernail test? Like it says on the instructions? To me that looked like it wasn't quite cured. It takes on a more matte look when it's cured that looked a bit glossy. You have to stick your fingernail in it and if you can leave a mark or indentation then it's not ready

That's a old school cooling system. 3-5 psi when at operating temp. I'm not saying JB weld extreme heat is good, because it's absolute trash. It also says to apply and then apply heat, if on exhaust let vehicle run to heat the sealant.

Flame braze, TIG with aluminum/bronze wire or ni-rod stick would be the way to fix it or use a series of interlocking studs that are for cracked cylinder head repair, if it's thick enough you also could have put a series of interlocking 1/8 NPT plug along the crack as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKTqJmLab-Ugc0

It’s good for engines but don’t use the that stuff use the 500 degrees and the 5033 psi but for a Diesel I wouldn’t use it for and if you going to do it the right way if your able to get inside and take the engine apart double tap both sides from the inside and the outside and when you tested it with the psi it looks like you did not let it cure. It takes 24 hours to cure.

Your spose to cure it with high heat for about an hour , maybe 200 c, the liquid powder rises to the surface and you can wire brush it off, whats left is the fused metal powder grit thats diamond hard, extreme heat is for things like exhaust manifolds , furnace molds etc where there is enough heat to cure, exhaust mufflers etc are too cold, you would need a flame to cure, down side of this stuff is very little contact bond strength and brittle so need very rough surface, mix it with jb marine weld and acetone to stop it turning to clumps clumps might work

It's just a steel epoxy... that u used incorrectly. It's only to be used on holes and never stress fracture. U can't expect an epoxy to hold up to those kind of stresses. Jb weld marine is better. Its resistance to oil and gas is much better. If u can't have it welded, Ur gonna have to fabricate a steel plate from some mild steel to fit along the cracks and line it up then Drll 4 7/16 holes tap them to some grade 6 fine thread bolts .. clean site w grinder creating a small trough then fill area mount and tighten plate.

I used a some of this about 6 months ago. Ya right bud, it's absolute garbage. And a complete waste of time and money. I resorted to the original JB Weld. Well done for putting the word out there. Only wish i'd seen it sooner.

You need to mix it well for about 5 mins or so tell it mushy then put one layer on whatever item then a second one after four hours then if you need a third layer wait another four hours go ahead then let it sit for 24hours let it run with some heat from the machine then you should be good to go

Cracked blocks have go through a process called stitching to repair. Engineers in the Farm industry should be able to help you.

You're not working on an engine block dude, that's a boat anchor and if you had taken the time to read the directions on that particular tub of J-B Weld you would have found that nowhere on the label does it say you can repair a boat anchor with it.

what i have successfully done many times fist i got a jig that drills hole that are spaced you drill a pilot hole at the end of the crack then use the jig to drill two more holes and drill holes so far apart with the jig intill you get to the end of the crack you tap the holes and then countersink the holes. apply red loctite then screw in the pins that will twist off . grind them flush then drill in between the pins with the jig and do the same then after you are don i use standard JB weld to hide the repair. the system can be obtained from www.locknstitch.com. i always do the liquid glass treatment in the radiator. afterwards run it a few days with straight water then rain and refill with antifreeze

the original jb tends to work better... i patched the block and my oil pan (which the crank hits alot) in my jeep and its still holding perfectly fine. no cracks or anything.

Regular JB weld would do just fine there. No need for the extreme heat type.

You did this wrong, and I don't think this is the right application for your problem. They have other sealers that work with liquids. This is more for like mufflers and headers and such.

Should of used flex seal. Phil swift replaced the boat hull on a Jon boat with a screen door and it kept water tight. I hear talk of a new commercial with the screen door, their making a surfboard out of it & surfing the lava waves in Hawaii. Been about 3 weeks though. Can’t imagine what the holdup would be.
