You are hitting a good point of which many do not understand. Within the DOT world, it is quite possible to overload your rear axle and still fall within your GVWR rating (think trailer pin weight). Keep in mind that with the 4.30 gears, comes with a heavier Dana m275 rear axle, which also comes with a heavier spring pack. Ford went to heavier axles in the '23 models in order to handle the heavier tow/haul numbers. Power wise, the Zilla does just fine w/ 3.73 gears, but I wanted the heavier rear end as well. JB, if you possess any 'insider access' to Ford, please ask about the new axles within the '23s... No one I have asked even understand that of what I am inquiring. Thank You Sir!!

Great comment! I wish I had some engineers to reach out to because I too would want more info on what they plan to use for this truck. My 7.3L I ordered has a slightly higher GVWR compared to the 2022 so I’m wondering if what you stated has something to do with it 👍🏾

Rear axle rating’s definitely get overlooked. You can be rest assured most 3/4 ton trucks towing big fifth wheels will be either over, or really pushing the rear axle capacity. I’ve never heard that about the 4.30 getting a different rear axle than non 4.30 trucks. That would explain the increase in towing capacity more than just having a different gear. I know GM does this for 2500 and 3500 SRW diesels. The 2500s have I think 11.5” ring gears and the 3500 gets a 12”.

2020-2022 F250s with the 7.3 came with 3.55 stock or 4.30 optional. 2020-2022 F350 SRWs came with 3.73 stock or 4.30 optional. I’m not sure what the 23s come with stock. But when in doubt always get the lowest gear ratio you can with a HD gasser if you’re going to tow with it. The MPG difference is negligible, but the seat of the pants feel is definitely noticeable with lower gears. 4.30s all day!

@@JeepCherokeeful Thanks for the tip. I ended up having to buy whatever I could find on a lot, the last day of 2023 for a tax write off. Section 179. Anyway, I picked up a 2024, F350 SRW, 7.3 Godzilla with the 3:73 Gears, 4x4, XL with STX package. It's been a great truck so far, daily driver & I tow skid steers, and Mini X's. Most of my trips are about 20-30 miles round trip, local around town, average speed 25 mph. It's all around Atlanta neighborhoods, so it's been fine. I would say it pulls better off the line than my Chevy Duramax 2500 year, 2007.5. The 10 speed transmission really does well. If I could have ordered this truck from the factory I would have gotten the 4.30 gear ratio instead. The 3:73 does fine on flat ground and even hills, except for starting from a dead stop on a hill. In that case I have to give it a lot of gas. As for towing I am getting 10 mpg with Ford 350 on interstate & 7-8 mpg around town. My Chevy Diesel got 10 mpg on interstate as well, so not much difference. I never really checked it around town. I almost bought a Ford F250 Tremor to stay under the 10,000 GVWR & avoid DOT stickers....since the Tremor 250 has the same suspension as the 350. But the ride height is a little tall for unloading tools and materials. Plus the off road tires had a lot more noise, and my truck is my mobile office. I have to make a lot of calls to clients & I need a quiet cab.

Low rear end gear also helps with engine braking. The guys that tow in the mountains know, alot of roads your going less than highway speeds, and more gears and lower rear end gearing helps a lot with 45mph and less engine braking on steep hills. 3.55 and 3.73 are great for highway speed engine braking.

Something else to touch on is tire size. Lot of folks seem to want to upgrade to a larger tire, even without a lift, these trucks can handle a larger tire. So if you have 3.73’s and put a 35” tire on, then you have more like 3.55’s. Something to think about! 👍🏼

I will give you a simple way to find rear axle gear ratio so that you don't get messed up. Jack up only one rear tire off the ground. Make a mark on the pinion slinger and another on the axle housing so that you can count revolutions of the drive shaft. Make a reference mark on the tire so that you can count revolutions of the tire. The mark could be at 6:00 and another on the concrete floor. Place transmission in nuetral. Slowly turn the tire TWO full revolutions while counting the number of times the driveshaft turns. You have to make TWO revolutions because you are going through the spider gears in the differential. The number of turns is easy to tell on the drive shaft because there are only a few ratios, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73 or 4.30 on these Ford trucks. Still easy to find if you have 4.10 on another brand. I have been using this method for 35+ years and I rebuild a lot of axles. One other thing I would like to see with your 7.3 mileage testing, I would like to see how much a larger set of offroad capable tires hurts the mileage on the 7.3. On my 2017 Duramax I can get over 20 mpg when running my Michelin highway tires and I drop to 17 mpg with my Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T's. I did a little snooping on a 7.3 Tremor site and a lot of the mileage claims were in the 11-13 range most likely due to the more agressive tread design.

Speed up a grade will also make a difference. If you do not tow often but on those occasions when you tow heavy up grades and are ok say at 55 mph vs 70 mph, you will be using the lower transmission gears and can compensate for say a 3 55 vs a 4.10.

Still watching but of course the transmission and it’s spread of ratios have to be taken into consideration. Ford and GM 10 speeds have super aggressive and closely spaced gearsets, which can make up a lot for what the rear end aggressiveness has traditionally been needed for.

@HalfShell I think just depends on what your use is. Same justification can be made to go with a less aggressive rear being with the 10 speeds you have a lot of under driven gear ratios if you need the torque multiplication. I’d personally pick the ratio that allows me to utilize as much of the rpm range as possible, even on the low end as needed for unladen or light duty pulling. I just saw a comment here about someone cursing at 2k rpm at 75, to me that’s a waste if you’re unloaded or can make due with fewer rpm. I only have a 6 speed but cruise at 16-1700rpm and even towing light has no issues if light acceleration is needed. I do have a Livernois tune which also helps transmission calibration and shifting, but of course if I was pulling heavy lots of the time and I could use a more aggressive ratio more doing so, would obviously go to a 4.30 or similar direction as needed.

JB, the reason for the horsepower loss at higher altitudes is that the air is thinner. Diesel engines do not have nearly as much loss for one simple reason. Modern Diesel engines make their own atmosphere via a turbo charger. So a very “simple” way to reduce that power loss in a gasser is to add a turbo charger.

Nice video. So I want to state my opinion first. I think there’s a place for the 4.x rear gears even with the 6, 8 and 10 speed transmissions. Here they are: 1) True working trucks or just trucks loaded to max or near max GVWR all the time. 2) extreme off roading and/or extreme grades. I’m talking off road type stuff (20%) be it job sites or otherwise, not 6, 7, 8, or even 10% Highway grades. 3) if you just need the extra rated towing capacity, which to be just honest at that point a gas engine may not be what you should be getting. For everyone else, they are unnecessary and very well could be a hindrance. By everyone else I mean weekend warrior types. These modern transmissions make all the difference, and yes even the 6 speeds. It’s more debatable for them then it is the 8 and 10 speed but I still would say not necessary even with the 6. If you think the 6 speeds are bad, then go tow with a 4 speed auto and come back and tell me what you think lol. Ultimately I wish GM would offer options because clearly a lot of people want those short rear gears. I think it’s mostly because they don’t understand about the transmissions but even still I’m all for more choices, not less. So good video. I also want to point out that I’m pretty sure Ford restricts the towing capacity by a certain percentage for every 1000’ of elevation. I know they do in the 1/2 tons. So even with the 4.30 you still would be losing towing capacity at elevation, though you would have more to lose.

Great post, as I’ve mentioned in the past, the lower gears probably don’t change MPG’s too much when compared to standard but as you have said, “you spin higher RPM’s if you’re not constantly hooked up to a trailer?” The 6+ gears do shorten the steps compared to 4/5 speeds but when I post the next video, I think you will see just how busy the 10 speed is with the 3.73. Now the 4.30 may be the same but I’m willing to bet it may help keep you in a higher rpm to reduce hunting gears… Correct me if I’m wrong.

@@JB_WhoWork I think that’s just the nature of Ford’s programming for the 10 speed. What you just said is by far and away the number one complaint with their 10 speed. So I don’t know if it will really change anything or not. You will definitely be at a higher rpm at the same speed though.

To your point: #1 True working trucks or just trucks loaded to max or near max GVWR all the time. (I do this often, about 10% over the GCWR, set by Chevy. I'm always under the GVWR of truck / trailer combo. I have a 2007 Chevy Duramax 2500 for reference. Chevy manual says 22,000 pounds is the GCWR. Pulling a skid steer I'm always at 23,500 pounds which is over the 22,000 pound Chevy suggested limit. Sometimes with materials on dump trailer I'm at 24 or 25,000 pounds, & I can feel the truck straining to stop, even with brand new brakes on the trailers. The diesel engine pulls great, with 3.73 I beleive, it's the stopping power that isn't fun. I'm looking to buy a new gruck before year end to pull 11,000 pound Takeuchi TL140 on 5,000 pound gooseneck deckover trailer. Trying to stay under DOT radar and non CDL. Any suggestions? Ford 350 with a single rear axle? 7.3 Godzilla with 3.73 or 4.30? I realize a F350 dually makes more sense, it's just a tough daily driver with parking garages, downtown parking, etc.

@@southernlandscapedesigns8081 well GM HDs got a huge performance boost with the 2011 model year as far as the chassis goes. Your 2007 was basically a warmed over GMT-800 chassis which dated back to the 1999 model year. So I can see you having some performance concerns towing as heavy as you are. Anyways, as for CDL laws I’m not sure if you know them, but a Class A license is required for commercial use IF your GCWR exceeds 26,000 pounds (so 26,001 and up) AND your trailer has a GVWR exceeding 10,000 pounds. So you have to be careful there with your new trailer if you go with a dually or even a SRW 3500. What would I recommend? If you’re working them every day any of the new diesels will kill it. They all have exhaust brakes that work good. Rams is the best BUT if the Ram guys will be honest a new 2500 Ram just doesn’t handle heavy trailers as good as the competition. Ford or GM gas trucks are rated to tow more than your current diesel (my 2022 2500 gas Chevy has a GCWR of 24,000 pounds, the 2024s are 26,000) and they are physically much bigger, heavier trucks than your 2007. I don’t think you would have stopping trouble but with the diesels you definitely won’t due to the exhaust brakes. And then that 4.30 rear with the 7.3, at highway speeds you’re still going to be rpm and mph limited to how low a gear you can get into. At those speeds the 3.73 would perform just as good because it will be able to downshift one extra gear and it ends up having a slightly shorter final drive than the 4.30 does when it’s one gear higher. Again, that’s highway speeds now. 25, 30 mph and down the 4.30 will do better.

So in a F250 when you order a diesel over a gas motor, the tow rating goes up significantly. But does Ford change anything to the chassis for this to work, or just the motor? In theory if they changed nothing else it would still be limited by the payload capacity of the truck. I have a 2015 Silverado 2500HD, with the 6.0, and 4:10 gearing. This has a higher tow rating than a new F250 with the 7.3L with the 3:55 gears, only by a couple hundred pounds.

If you tow that exclusively, the 4.30 likely will benefit you giving your truck the best opportunity to find the right gear and rpm for whatever speed you’re traveling. The trailer weighs 8,000 pounds empty, not sure what our actual weights are as I still need to visit a CAT scale. So far the 3.55 seems perfect for our use around the Midwest with occasional trips through the mountains of WV. The F-250 is a 2022, purchased new last March and it now has 20k 6:38 miles on it. Could not be happier with the truck. The 7.3 is a beast. We probably tow 40% of the time and when we’re not towing I can easily achieve 18 mph on the highway. On our last 4,000 trip from WI to ME we averaged 10.4 mpg overall and I’m cool with that. So happy I didn’t go with the diesel. Life is good 😀

@@bryanthornton6787 thanks Bryan. I think my only final drive ratio options for the 2022 F-250 with the 7.3 gas were 3.55 or 4.30. I thought the 4.30 would be a bit too low, given that most of my driving is without towing and I want to maximize fuel economy when driving without the load.

@@bryanthornton6787 Yeah, I'm the one in the clip he showed. It's a tough balance of giving enough information while not getting too in the weeds, which bores people. For 99% of the gas and diesel trucks out there, it's a true statement. And if I do tell people, most of them aren't going to go out and add a turbo or supercharger, so it's not terribly useful info. Considering the gooseneck weight (empty) is 2k pounds on my trailer, the Ram could not do it. The Silverado was/is the best one around. For $61k, I think it’s the best option. @@porkchop7268 If you are towing the 5th wheel a lot, seriously consider the diesel. Just a few trips a year probably doesn't justify the diesel in my opinion. However, with diesel you can fill up at the truck pumps with lots of space to swing that 5th wheel around. There is no gas at those pumps.

@@samgford partly true. But most gas trucks have a 10,650 GVWR. Why? With the 7.3L XLT 4x4 ( no tremors or fx package), the LONG bed (8') has between 400-700# MORE Payload than the same truck with the 6'9" bed. Mine has 4417# payload on the 18" wheels, compared to the one you've rented. I can easily hit the 20k trailer without going over payload, but I never will. I bought more truck than I need without going to a diesel. Pretty sure you've never seen or heard someone say "dang truck has too much capabilities, I'd better downgrade!" LoL If you want to see how to get that "unicorn" 7.3L with that 20k fiver rating, DM me and I'll send you the build sheet. It was NOT easy to figure out, and it was NOT easy to get Ford to build in 22 with all the parts shortages.

You actually lose 3% of horsepower for every 1,000 feet increase in elevation. So if you’re 5,000 feet above sea level, it’s 3x5, meaning you just lost 15% of your power. That 400HP motor is now making 340. That’s where turbo engines make up for the loss, since they’re forced induction, and where electric vehicles do the best, since it’s all electric and the less air density means less drag. It’s called physics... take a couple classes...
