Jeff will visit the location of the Lathrop train station in California's San Joaquin County where former California State Supreme Court Chief justice David S. Terry was shot to death on Aug. 14, 1889 after he assaulted U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field. Terry had breathed threats against Field for many months.

And I thought unhinged people attacking judges who’s rulings they disagreed with was a modern phenomenon! Actually, I read about this in the Tom Cunningham chapter of the book “Badges and Buckshot”. And every time I drive past Lathrop, like just the other day, I wonder where the depot is. Thanks so much for showing us the location and telling the story so thoroughly.

@@toserveman9265 .Well, the Democrats DID get real mad because the Republicans freed their slaves. Then they tried an "insurrection" by killing Abe Lincoln, just like they tried to kill Brett Kavanaugh not long ago.

Lucky you found an empty field in Lathrop anymore. 10 years of unabashed construction of warehouses and multifamily has pretty well erased any sign of history.

Time does not "keep moving forward" -- time is relative meaning it only exist to superior beings (humans) so long as we collectively agree that it exists as a tangible concept that can be tracked, monitored, and measured regardless of culture, religion, linguistic or national barriers. It wasn't that long ago that every country had it's own unique way to tell the length of 1 Year's time.

Thanks Jeff & Sarah! That was a very interesting bit of history. Especially the connection with the Broderick / Terry duel. Back when they actually taught history in school, we learned about it and my dad actually brought me to the site. What I didn't know was how it ended for Terry. Thanks for the history lesson! I appreciate the hard work you put into your videos!

"The Duel" is an awesome story! But the "David Terry Story" does not begin or end there. I hated Terry when I first read about "The Duel." Of course liberal minded folks did the writings that are easily acquired. The more I read about Terry, my opinion of him changed. If you read deep into the 1854 incident in San Francisco involving the San Francisco Vigilance Committee and the Hopkins stabbing you will discover some very interesting facts

Love to see a History Hunters episode where you travel to Merced Lake in SF at the spot where the Broderick/Terry duel took place. There are two small pillars there that marks the positions where they stood. It’s an interesting tale, the duel, Showing the great divide that had existed in the then Democrat party leading to the Civil War. When he lent his services to the Confederacy, It was said he had on his person a letter from Jefferson Davis appointing him governor of Nevada if he was able to secure the Comstock lode for the Confederacy. He was involved in many intrigues in Virginia City during its first boom period.

Thank you for sharing this. Never knew this. Please keep finding these history stories for the area. You’re absolutely right. It would make a great film. I have some screenwriter training. Perhaps I should do some more research. Could either go with the straight period film (would be fun to recreate historical Lathrop) or give it a modernized adaptation (which might sell better in Hollywood). Either way, it’s certainly a fascinating story, worthy of being told and shared. I wish schools in the area would dig much deeper into local history. Technically, high schools only teach three years of history. I’d love to see 9th graders start with a semester of revisiting California history (only taught in 4th grade) and a semester of local (city/county) history. Or combine both into a semester and do the geography thing for the other semester. It’s important for all of us to know the history of where we live.

I usually wait patiently on Sunday mornings around 8am for you to post your latest masterpiece Jeff, but this week it didn't happen like usual. I am catching up now and really enjoyed your sharing of this incident in Lathrop and later in the Stockton Rural Cemetery. My wife & I searched there for her grandmother but were unable to locate her. We also were in Modesto a month ago and based on a 1998 photo my sister had taken at a funeral and grave side burial of a distant cousin, I was able to find my grandparents burial site! I hadn't ever met my grandfather as he died (1935) long before I was born, but last saw my grandmother when I was 1 year old in 1956 when she passed from tongue cancer. I was thrilled to find their final resting places in the old Masonic Cemetery now named the Acasia Cemetery. Thanks for all your research and presentation each week, I enjoy history via History Hunters way more than I did back in school!

There was a small battle there between American frontiersmen and a local native band which occurred in 1831, one of the more colorful events in our area's history which hasn't gotten much attention from modern historians. Many years later, there was another incident in the same canyon involving some of orange county's prominent residents. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on this bit of forgotten southern california history!

My great grandfather knew Wyatt Erp in Dodge City and I find it so interesting that the Federal Marshall involved also had a Tombstone connection. It really is a small world. What's more, my gr. grandfather, Erp and this Marshall all ended up in California eventually. I've lived many years in Holland and traveled much of Europe and every state except Alaska. But I might say is also so sad to see and no that there are no traces of what went on there in the spot that you were in not one thing other than the the stones of the cemetery where the people are buried it's a wonder that the state of California didn't unearth those stones since they let so much stealing and looting going on there it's terrible to know that California is falling apart little by little. I also wanted to add that your sound effects about the slapping and the other parts were so funny in the court I like that that you add the sound effects to to the history. ❤️ Thank you again I enjoyed it as I always do on such a beautiful Sunday with you.
