Hi John, very informative video! I live in Lafayette, LA and there is a small business in Milton, LA, just south of Lafayette that manufacturers a product that is great for putting on leather products for treating them and will extend the life of anything made of leather, whether it be boots, furniture, leather bags, straps, etc. It's called Kali Leather Life, and here's a link to their web site: www.kalicollc.com. I use it all the time to condition a leather overnight carry bag, leather belts, shoes, and even the leather upholstery in my vehicle. I have no connection to this business whatsoever, and just wanted to call this to your attention to check out. It would be great for conditioning of your leather satchel you carry your camera gear in, as well as the leather shoulder straps you use on jobs. I buy mine at a local shoe store in Lafayette when I need a fresh bottle, Musso Shoe Repair (337-269-9501). I was referred to them by Kalico Products, as I don't think Kalico sells retail to the public, and their website even says to contact them for available retailers. I've been very satisfied with this product as it keeps leather products clean and supple. Oh, forgot to add, I'm a Fuji X-T3 user as well, which is how I happened to click on your channel.

There's a blog by David Hobby named "Strobist". I used to be part of the flickr group there and it was so incredibly helpful in my advancement as a photographer who was starting to learn about lighting with Speedlites. Portable lighting opens up a whole new world to you and gives you new tools to create mood and give your photos that extra something that puts them over the top! :)

My thoughts on the video: I agree on the lens vs body thing; lenses are much more important, and I think a lot of new photographers don't know that. I find that 16GB of RAM is sufficient for me, but I agree that more memory is always a good thing, and with how reasonably priced RAM is these days, 32 shouldn't be too expensive. My current computer is an AMD Ryzen 7 1700x with 16GB RAM and about 4TB of solid-state drives. I'm not a fan of Apple/Macs, but I'm an IT guy by day, and build all my own computers, and Windows is what I use at my day job, so it's what I stick with, for the most part(some Linux for fun). I do photo editing and audio production on it. Fast, and reliable, cards are a must, I like ScanDisk and Delkin. Lexar are good, too, but don't seem to get along with certain cameras. I don't yet have a Gnarbox, or something similar, but it's on my list. Godox is on my list to get, largely because my current system(Yongnuo) doesn't have Fuji triggers(have to use full manual all the time) and also has fewer options than Godox. Magmod is awesome :) Your straps/bags look awesome. They are MONEY, though! Like... not cheap lol :) I have ThinkTank bags and a Black Rapid strap. The ThinkTank Storyteller 10 hold my X-T3, 18-55 f/2.8-5, 35 f/2, 50-140 f/2.8, three extra batteries, several extra SD cards, a cleaning kit, business cards, a USB battery pack, and probably some other random stuff I'm forgetting.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing! I agree with everything as well. 16GB is probably more than enough for most people. For me I think just going ahead and spec’in up is a good choice for a lot of creatives who just are going to have their one computer and try not to upgrade for a long time. I haven’t had a chance to try any AMD stuff, still over here using Intel. But obviously they’re really capturing the game right now. Thinking about using them in my next build.

@@jbivphotography - I've been trying a 16GB notebook with discrete NVIDIA GPU with 4GB additional video RAM and Lightroom does not work well with that (I have GPU acceleration on). Altogether for as long as 2 years. Recently, I needed to call Adobe to help me with changing parameter settings, to at least get it to work. That however only worked after a clean boot along nothing else. I shoot 46MP@14bits raw, btw. When I bought the notebook, I had assumed it would be great for anything Lightroom and Photoshop. Now it only serves tethering in the studio and a bit of editing on the road. So the big bad workstation died on me in a BIOS upgrade and sat for two years waiting for a decision. Fed up with the notebook, I bought a Z490 (ASUS ProArt) motherboard that could still run my RAID drive sets of the old workstation. New CPU (Intel 10700K) and reused the rest (NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti with 11GB RAM, PSU, Noctua CPU cooler, 32 GB RAM, case, etc.) This new beast runs about 3,500 benchmark points faster than the old workstation two years ago: from 6,000 to 9,500 (FutureMark - faster than 84%). I also ran a game benchmark at 4K and that gave me 45fps lowest with 100% GPU bottlenecked. I don't game, I don't overclock, but did set the RAM timings to XMP at 2,666 MHz for best alignment with the CPU. The 10700K is a beast and may run up to 5.1 GHz occasionally. I'm not sure what is critical for success here: the 32GB RAM or the 11 GB of video RAM. The 1080 Ti will perform almost on the level of a new RTX 2080 Ti that has acceleration of ray tracing and AFAIK Lightroom does not use any ray tracing instructions, so would not benefit from that. For me robustness is paramount and has been a reason to avoid AMD. I run the GPU with the stable studio driver, not the riskier gaming driver. (Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, version 2004, build 19041.450) In the first couple days after installation I had two blue-screens and review of the dump-files pointed to the NVIDIA driver. That got updated the fourth day and W10 has been stable ever since. None of the issues reported in the interwebs played out on me. (I always have switched "fast reboot" off, as that is half-assed hibernation and works against proper updates of anything from firmware and drivers to apps.)

I use a 2014 MacBook pro with 16GB of RAM. It does the job for my quick edits in lightroom and light edits Photoshop. I'd be fine using it at least for another year. But I can see how bigger jobs and some video would push me towards 32GB. I can get by just fine for now.

If you're just starting out, you likely don't have a ton of money (at least from your photography) so these options don't seem as realistic. For me, I use Nikon's 14-24 mm and 24-120 f. 4, which is slow. But that works for me. A lot of reasons exist for using zooms over primes even though primes are sharper. I can make 40"x 48" prints from either lens, which is sharp enough. And they cost me a lot less than a wheel barrow full o primes. I do agree with you about Godox speedlights. I use the V1 system. It's great.

Great advice! I shoot outdoors - mostly commercial auto for Social Media (including KZbin Video) and action sports. I also live near the Rockies in Canada where weather is always a challenge. I go wit nylon water resistant cases and packs for everything. It is also interesting that others shooting Canon suggest starting with a wider zoom and a second zoom with some range over the prime lenses. Maybe for outdoor / moving subjects the adjustability is more of a priority but I agree at @$2K per lens a starting photographer can have 3-4 primes for the price. Now about the Gnarbox... they are up to $1000 in Canada and I burn through two or three 64K cards in a 2-4hr commercial vehicle shoots no problem shooting RAW so I need a 256K backup minimum. A thousand dollars??? Yikes! Last comment on the price note - It would be cool to see KZbinrs like you throw in the prices for this kit. Assuming I have a camera do I need $5-10K to get started??? I was offered my first commercial gig with no notice and just started shooting with a Canon T7i, two kit lenses, 3 memory cards and an iPad Pro - all gear I have already. Total for that gear was @$3500 but amateurs thinking of making the switch to pro likely have the basics already. My local Camera Shop also has consigned gear for sale that was sometimes rental equipment lightly used by staff available for good prices. I hit them up every time I am in the shop. Great videos! Happy I found you looking for advice from experienced photogs just like this. Thank you!

You could probably diy a substitute for the gnarbox with a raspberry pi or something similar and some supporting equipment if you know your way around that kind of thing. If you don't then probably you can get some (but not all) of the functionality by just setting it up to broadcast its own wifi network or something so you can get ssh access and just generally copying everything from your memory card to your ssd from there and editing it later. Im not sure that that's better than just buying more memory cards though, and it's completely up to you to make sure you copy everything over successfully if you do that.

Hi John, I'm looking to start my own business but currently I only have a Sony A6300 crop sensor camera. I have most of or close to all the lenses you refer to but I'm just a bit concerned that my camera is seen as a "entry level" camera. Do you think it's possible to start a photography business and provide the type of quality images at pro level with this camera or should I invest in a new camera system?

I don't actually. I've heard a lot of photographers doing that but it's just so much work in my opinion. I'm not sure how much it's really worth it. But it's a super cool idea and I know of a bunch of people who do it.

Yes Sir.......you are offering some GOOD INFO for Us budding Beginner Photographers! I currently have the Sony A6000....the Canon 6D Mark 2........and a vintage Minolta X700 Film Camera. I was looking to upgrade my Sony to the A6600 to strictly do STREET-Photography. But when I compared the price to the Fujifilm XT3 and XT4........I decided to go ahead and buy into the Fujifilm System! I haven't made any purchases YET.......I gotta work TWO MONTHS OF OVERTIME FIRST!!...Lol! That Fujifilm Glass looks IMPECCABLE & FLAWLESS though!!

good afternoon John how are you? I really like your videos. One of the best creators of photographic content in my opinion. One question, I already have an xt3 + 18-55. with a limited budget, you would buy two prime lenses OR a 16-55 type zoom. and which prime lenses to start working with events etc. I don't know if I sell my 18-55 or stay with it, with your experience help me hahaha Thank you.

Julio Cabral buy the 56 1.2. It is my favorite lens hands down. 16-55 is sharp but it doesn’t have the magic.

Trust me hankintosh needs too much time to justify building it and given upgrades are really painful. For most pick one prebuilt PC - 32 GB is really good idea

I've not experienced it myself. I've been on my hakintosh now for almost 3 years and it's been a SUPER smooth ride. In that time I've upgraded my RAM and my graphics card, even my case no problem at all. Also I'm able to update software just like I would on a normal Mac. It sounds like you might have never used Open Core but honestly it's the SMOOTHEST way to run a Hackintosh. So far I've preferred it to owning a real Mac. I would suggest it to anyone who doesn't mind putting a little extra time into their computer.

Pro Tip: It is indeed possible to leave your laptop at home. And another thing: buy a camera with two cardslots so you dont have to shoot 64 or 128 gig cards and have a full card every hour. Other than that, good advice
