Just try and imagine, that the man who wrote this was, stone deaf. Not only, could he imagine what it would sound like, he would never get to hear it performed by an orchestra. That is dedication, and utter genius. To be that driven. But it is so sad, at the same time. People use the word genius nowadays, so flippantly, but this is what true genius is.

Today May 4, I accidentally stumbled upon the house where Schiller wrote this song, Schiller house, Leipzig, Germany. I was not aware when I visited Leipzig about this Symphony and the song before today, being a musician from India I rarely followed western classical. However today was magical and I am writing this comment travelling back Leipzig to Berlin and listening to this on youtube on RE train. Something has changed in me today after understanding the English meaning of this song plus the legendary music from Beethoven. I am one step closer to the creator. Thank you Schiller, Thank you Beethoven.

@@kevinlane1219 I can focus from now until eternity but I don't have talent and that divine spark within me. All I have is the ability to enjoy other people's talent and to humbly appreciate it. Some people stand so high above the rest of us, the average people, that it's impossible to rule out divine intervention in these cases. I understand that there are other explanations, but I don't see any evolutionary advantage to having such talent other than the pure effect of such an individual on raising people's consciousness. For such a goal, an architect is needed.

My father was a huge fan of Beethoven and played his music all the time, he collected the records of Beethoven's music, but only when Karajan was conducting. In the 70ties I remember that Miguel Rios performed "A song of joy", and I told my dad how much I loved it. So he sat me down and we listened to the "original". Whenever I play that piece (on a record), my father is close by.

Just when I thought it could not get any better. Wow!!

Feeling so happy! 😇

Los versos son una adaptación de Beethoven de la "Oda a la Alegría", de Schiler. Pero son un Himno a la Humanidad. Tan es así que fue asumido por la Comunidad Europea como su himno

I had the honour to visit the Beethoven House Museum in Bonn last spring and at the same time they had an exhibition of Bernstein and Beethoven in Berlin performing this concert. The most moving part of the exhibit was a picture of Leonard Bernstein chipping away at the Berlin Wall along with numerous other “concrete woodpeckers.”

I have never been in the audience for this glorious work, only the chorus. I must reverse that omission! Even after 40 years I remember my part! Well, ok. I always end up singing with the recording so it's constantly reinforced in memory. After the final notes have sounded I always remember the first time, when the audience leaps to their feet cheering and carrying on almost like a football game! There you go, Dr. Kodaly, people as excited by classical music as by sports! 😊

Karajan and the Berlin Phil are the pinnacle of the Beethoven symphonies even though they are the product of the 1960s. Reason is that the combination of Karajan interpretive genius and the BPO only come around once in a lifetime! Greatness.

The choir's separation and enunciation of each quarter note is top-notch! We did this in my undergrad - we had the vocal forces to do it but I felt the singing was too legato so the listeners couldn't distinguish between the syllables in the "main" (forte/fortissimo) sections.

He heard it with his mind’s ear. He was a trained musician so he just wrote the notes down. Some writers have even suggested that his deafness actually helped his composing since there were no outside distractions.
