Thank you so much for your videos. I bought the JBL a month ago. At first, I wasn't sure because I am not a professional and I had issues understanding how to adjust my sound but wanted something easy to carry around without having to carry a separate mixer. So I started doing tutorials to help me understand, EQ, EFFECTS, Length , depth and all those things that were Chinese to me! :-). I am getting there and the more I learn about all this, the happier I am with my JBL. If you want to buy one, just know that you might have to put a little time and effort to make it sound right if you are not a professional.

I'm a live sound guy and my first impression on the difference between S1 & Eon was that the S1 sounds out of phase. I think that's intentional. Bose has spent years trying to make their little speakers sound bigger by toying with psychoacoustics, creating 3D effects in the tradition of classic aural exciters like Aphex. Most folks are impressed by these smoke and mirrors, but to my ear they are not flat or natural. They account for the heavy bottom and the thin middle, whereas the JBL has too much middle, but as you say, that is changeable through the robust EQ. The question isn't which sounds "better" but which sounds like your instrument and voice. Bose uses a lot of compression and other processing, but in the end you see a lot more JBL boxes used in live sound than Bose. If you're one who just wants to hit one button and sound like either Drake or Journey, the Bose is your huckleberry; but if you want to tweak your tone yourself and achieve the truest fidelity to yourself, get a straight speaker that gives you flat response (like a good microphone) and do the seasoning to taste. Thanks for your observations.

Ha, well said in more detail than I did in another post. I agree totally with your assessment - one sound guy to another. 😉 I simply said it more like Bose relies heavily on wave guide tricks and DSP and they adjust for the untrained masses who think the EQ smiley face is the "best" sounding.

Your series on this one has been very helpful. My only qualm with the Bose is that I'm not a fan of the Reverb it comes with. I know that sounds rather silly, but for somebody like me who plays flutes from South America to backing tracks, it is of importance to me the type of Reverb that I'm playing through, and the JBL seems to have one's better suited for them. The only thing holding me back from getting one at this moment is if the app is accessible for blind users.

Aaron, thanks so much for this. The JBL is great for what it does and very convenient when you need a battery...BUT...You have actually helped me to decide to go with a QSC K8.2 I liked the idea of a battery powered speaker but I play weekly at the same restaurant and there's an outlet right behind me. I bought the QSC because I wanted my money to go toward sound quality rather than the battery and app features. I play instrumental guitar with a looper and i have break music through an iPad/Spotify. I bought a Bluetooth receiver to send the iPad music to the 3.5 mm jack and it's perfect. I can mix from the guitar and iPad so I don't need a mixer or an app. The room is the same so there's no need to eq a new room. Great channel...keep going!!

Thanks Marco and I totally agree. The first thing to buy is the PA speaker. Then get a JBL Compact to supplement it. It will be nice if one day the JBL can replace the QSC but right now they are different tools for different applications.

Thank you for the awesome demo! I head to London at least 5 times a year and enjoy listening to local buskers. One musician turned me onto the S1 as he sounded great! I went ahead and purchased one back home, practiced with it in my studio, then tried it at a gig and found it clipped and sounded too muddy, guitar, for my liking - vocals were great. Thank goodness for Guitar Center return policy. Now I'm once again looking for a battery compact to take to some gigs, and even over to the UK. I've had a hard time locating real musicians testing out the gear, then posting their experience(s). Now I have a clear choice, the JBL EON, thanks to your insight. I was going to go with the Bose simply because I couldn't find any JBL's on display anywhere and figured there must be a reason why. When I finally found a store where I could do a side by side comparison, I thought it sounded much better than the Bose with just a little adjustment. The app is pretty good, though it did freeze once and I had to restart it. Save your settings and its plug and play just like the Bose. JBL really should make sure stores have these on display, they have to be losing money because of it.
@Bigtel19705 жыл бұрын
I received mine two days ago... and immediately had problems. Firstly a simple one, but nonetheless unexplained, just switching it on isn't straight forward! A single press of the power button does nothing.. it's a press and hold (not sure how long for, but 3 seconds seems to do it). Next up, mine wasn't shown as charging when switched off - where the Quickstart guide says it would show in the battery meter. Then, after a few tries, it DID spark up and then do it. I gave it all a good test to find that it's a great sounding unit, plenty of volume for many applications. My main usage would be weddings (I'm a wedding guitarist) but I occasionally have a singer for ceremonies so it needs to be portable, light (I do a lot of weddings in castles with spiral staircases!) but it mostly needly to be very clear sounding with good bass and mid, then lastly it needs to be battery powered as some weddings are in the middle of fields/beaches etc... so this ticked all those boxes. I spent an evening running instruments and vocals through the channels and found it all checked out good. Bluetoothing music to it on the separate channel was successful and it would play LOUD - surprisingly loud. I've gone from a battery powered Roland Street Cube EX to this for the 'mobile' stuff and this is a massive step up. I had tried the Bose S1.. but it lacked 'depth' for my guitar (Spanish Jose Ramirez) so I never bought one (also because of the stupid battery system it employs and short battery life). BUT... after spending that evening testing it I did find a few niggles - one being that when I changed the reverb on one channel it actually affected the other I had plugged in - this shouldn't have happened. Then, when finished I left it plugged in for the night. In the morning I switched it on only to find that the battery meter was only showing RED and would not charge - either switched on or off. The speaker WAS working but only on mains power - as soon as I disconnected the power it just died. After reading comments on this video I downloaded the app.. which showed immediately that there was a system update available.. so I carried that out. Once that had downloaded/uploaded to the unit it shut down, restarted, hovered for a while then returned to normal... the unit now had FULL charge, showing green in the battery meter. The reverb/channel problem is now fixed. It all seems ok now.... however, it now has a level limiter that kicks in at very high volume (the Master volume glows red) which it didn't do before and I do feel it has lost some of its top end volume since the update - especially on blue toothed music. I'm still 'testing' this to see if it's going to be spot on for me though - as it seems that anything that has it's own upgradable firmware is generally open to having problems. I do like it though - it does some nice things, sounds superb. Guitars sound stunning through it - just a minor addition of bass on the channel brought my Martin to glorious thunderous life. Vocals are crystal clear. Now I'm a big Bose fan, having a LOT of their produce in my sound collection.. but I do think that this edges forward on the comparison war. Have you or anyone found any anomalies now having the new firmware though?
@aaronshortmusic5 жыл бұрын
The latest firmware does indeed fix a lot of bugs. The red light indicator that you are seeing is just the clip indicator working more accurately. Wow, just came here after your last video and commenting as I watch this...just finished the studio comparison. The S1 absolutely killed the JBL here where I thought the opposite in the last video. Yikes! Okay, thanks for clarifying the impedance match etc. Makes sense. Bose, I'm fairly certain has an active DSP going at all times that will correct for the room etc. That's why they don't include much adjustment. Not the way I like to do it, but would explain the consistency with the S1.

I can't comment on the jbl because I don't have one or have I ever heard one. But I can tell you how great the Bose is. I used only one in a room of about 100 people in a room about 50×150 that was upstairs in a restaurant for a birthday party with karaoke. That tiny little speaker rocked that huge room so well that even walking downstairs in an even more crowded part of the restaurant, it sounded like a huge party going on upstairs. People was asking us to turn it down. Also I put the speaker at one end of a manufacturing warehouse on bluetooth mode. I got 300+ feet away before the bluetooth started cutting out, and the sound was amazing even 300 feet away. I can't imagine any speaker surpassing this. But as I said, I've never heard the jbl, so who knows. Just my 2 cents.

Hi thanks for a great review . I think I like the BOSE S1pro sound better the guitar sounds more natural the JBL eon one compact gives a tin like sound to the guitar . I have also heard Roland handsonic plugged in to the S1 pro and the drum sounds good so does percussion they sound natural . This I heard when the music was playing from my BOSE L1 compact with a friend jamming on a handsonic which was plugged into a BOSE S1 pro the tone was beautiful in an open garden area . Also the sound carried quite well and was almost as loud as the L1 compact . I also own a pair of BOSE L1 compact for 8 years never died on me . I also own a pair of the JBL eon one they died on me 3 times in 3 years both the speakers . Also the pre amp on the JBL eon one wasn’t great when you compared to the BOSE L1 compact . So I think reliability BOSE will win hands down considering the fact I gig about 180 times a year and they work . The JBl eon one maybe 30 times a year . So for me I would pick the Bose S1 pro any day . When u just plug in it sounds great . Whereas JBL needs eq to sound that clear . Anyway this is just my view . Other people may have different experiences . I think the Bose has nailed it in compact PA’s and JBL is trying to catch up but not quite there . . Reliability and dependability also BOSE wins .

Hi Joshua, thank you for your comment. I think that if your rig sounds great into the S1 then it's a great choice. If it doesn't then the flexibility of the JBL is preferable. After using The Compact One for a while now, indoors and out, it is truly excellent BUT................outdoors, in daylight, the illuminated knobs and channel indicator lights are not bright enough; impossible to see & distinguish one from another, making quick adjustment on the fly impracticable. In essence, using the JBL as your mixer and monitor and another speaker as your front of house. I thought this might be a good way to utilize the functions of the JBL when I need some more volume for a larger venue. Also, another question on the JBL... If you set your EQ for a mix, does it retain the mix if the bluetooth is disconnected? I'm worried about having a mix all dialed in, then the bluetooth disconnecting for whatever reason and my mix getting all messed up. After a few years now, what are your thoughts on the unit? Like almost everyone, I am trying to decide between the two. Seems like the BOSE sounds better straight, but the JBL has the potential to sound even better once you learn the ins and outs of the EQ. But, that means it is totally dependent on the app? If you forget to charge your phone (I know the JBL has chargers which is great, but in a really low phone battery situation, it wouldn't be enough), then you are stuck using the JBL straight which doesn't sound so good. How does this compare to the QSC K12, if you have ever had occasion to hear that system? I am thinking of the portability and the sound, and compromising between the two. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

These two products do not even compare. The K12 is capable of being MUCH louder. They are for different applications.

Hi, yes it has a line output so send the sound to another speaker.
@donlewis24455 жыл бұрын
I really like the jbl. I have the Bose s1 also but bought a pair of the jbls and for my application they really shine. My one big complaint is the delay, it repeats too much. You really need to have control over the delay for it to be useful. Currently I can not use it, I would think an update would fix that also. I also have pairing problems with Bluetooth but as you mentioned give it time and wait for a hopeful fix. I love tweeting my gear so having a tablet where you can really contour things is what got me on board. I know others mentioned you could not assign effects as needed to channels but I have not seen that problem. Maybe it was fixed with an update I did load. Time will tell if this is going to be the future of wireless systems, I also have a Zoom L8 mixer which works on batteries so it’s a new world for quality in a unpowered environment.

Hi, Aaron. Thanks for this series! In the earlier vids it was a pretty close call btw the JBL and the S1, but in this video the S1 is clearly superior and doesn't sound too different from the full PA . I don't know how much you've played the two of them over this past plague-filled year, but I'm looking for a battery powered solution for guitar (Martin with K&K mini pure) and vocal. I figure I'll be using my small K&K preamp (vol + 3 band eq) regardless of which amp/PA I choose. I currently own the Fishman mini charge, and I just can't dial it in to my liking. The amp just sounds too "hard" and "in your face"; it can make my little Martin 00L sound harsh. Anyway, do you have any other thoughts/impressions on the JBL vs S1 Pro for small space gigging that may help guide my decision? (Note: I do some percussive body tapping also). I'm concerned that the JBL might be a real PIA to dial in, and maybe the Bose will keep the edge off and offer a smoother, less harsh sound, although I don't know if it will handle the body tapping as well...
@aaronshortmusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I haven’t been playing out but I still say the Bose is smaller and sounds good with MOST guitars but the JBL has killer features. Because you have a K&K I would lean towards the JBL since the advanced EQ will allow you to really dial it in.

I’ll contact Alto and ask them if they would like me to review it. I do think it’s worth learning about EQ. Just the basics. Did you see the video I made about using the EQ on the JBL?
@adde655 жыл бұрын
The Alto is not in the same league as these two IMO, in fact I would rather use a Behringer MPA, which is very good value and sounds excellent. Both of those use SLA batteries, which are heavier but very reliable and cheap to replace. Lithium has improved, but there are still issues with reliability in some cases. FWIW Fishman Loudbox Mini Charge is very good, and on par with the units in this video, particularly for solo instrumental players.
@babbalouie31664 жыл бұрын
Would not recommend the Alto Uber FX. Bought one from M.F. Tried it and returned it. Claims to have 100 watts of power. With the volume all the way up on my Guild D-55 (D-tar active pick up), and using a Sure SM57 for vocals I couldn't get any volume out of the Uber. Volume turned up to over half way before any sound could be heard. Even with both channel volumes and the main volume all the way up it was still way to quiet. Was going to use it for busking. No way loud enough for playing on the street, no matter the situation. Very much under powered. Own a couple other alto pieces of equipment and couldn't be more satisfied with them. Very disappointing in the Uber FX.

Does my guitar need to have an active pick up for this channel to work? Enjoyed your review! A big factor for my decision to buy the JBL EOC.
@aaronshortmusic4 жыл бұрын
It’s actually designed for passive pickups but any guitar should work there. Make sure the volume is up on channel 3 and also on the master volume. It may have less volume than input 1 and 2 (especially if you have the mic setting enabled when using a guitar in those).

I'm a full time muso weighing up between this Bose S1 Pro and the JBL Eon One Compact. If one is capable enough I'm planning to use for various gigs and on the road busking with some low bass in the backing tracks. Seems the JBL might have a bit more punch to it and a more even spread sound from low to high which is probably what I'm after as I play 5str bass, guitar, and fiddle. I noticed I can't really hear the low g on your guitar, does your guitar have individual eq on it? Thanks for all your reviews, really helpful!

Tried both out in store. Found the bose muddy and lacking in clarity for lower frequencies, it had a whisper on the high frequencies which for violin picks up on background noise of the bow, and for guitar the sound of things like pic noise. As someone who knows what I want out of sound, these things disqualify the bose as something I would want to use, even without the JBL to compare with(and even though I was initially biased thinking Bose would be the musicians choice for quality and accuracy!) The JBL was my choice after half an hour, and the more I listen and use it the more I appreciate how much it pumps out the truth, clear in its lows and highs and maintaining even mix as I turn it up, it does everything I wanted and delights me with more. I'm stoked, really pleased with the JBL. Plus all the bonuses it's packed with. Cheers mate!

I have not tried the JBL 300. It looks interesting but does not have XLR or the app functionality of the Compact. If you want the built in lights and plan on using an external mixer it may be a good option.

RIZWAN SIDDIQUI I had not heard of these until today. If you get one please let me know how it is!

RIZWAN SIDDIQUI It is 34lbs. The Eon Compact is 14lbs. That makes them very different products. The Compact is small and light with built in effects and advanced EQ. The 300 is more of a PA speaker.

Great video,s thanks for being honest I still think the Boses S1 sounds better and less fidgeting..with the app .. but it’s ok remember, technology is your friend 🎸🎶👊🏽

The Bose may sound better with some instruments but if there’s an issue then you can’t allow for it. I moved away from both and now use the EV Everse 8. It sounds great and the app allows me to make changes when needed without bending down to do it at the speaker.

I tried doing the firmware update and it failed numerous time(msg in board error) JBL eon comlact is a great speaker but wait until they sort the bugs out before u buy it. Hopefully I don't have to send mine back.
@aaronshortmusic5 жыл бұрын
Restart the speaker and your phone and try again. Mine worked without issue. Also I imagine a newer phone/tablet will work better as they have more current Bluetooth modules (I used the latest iPhone for the update). I don’t feel there are any bugs with this unit. Just a couple of areas that could be improved (for my pickups) with firmware.
@trevnutz5 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic yeah I tried that. My phone is new too so hopefully its not a hardware issue with the speaker. I flicked jbl support an email and sent them a screen shot of the error so hopefully they can resolve this issue.

Voice sounded like it was lost at far greater depth than real... I felt the guitar mid-range concerns presented are fair, but in context with voice that it does not present a decisive image.

To my untrained ear the bose sounded streets ahead in that test. The eon sounded muddy on both vocals and guitar. Damn it, I was just veering to getting jbl and now Bose has the lead!
@aaronshortmusic2 жыл бұрын
Yes but the JBL has an app where you can customize the sound to your liking. The Bose does not…
@Timothythebrewer3 жыл бұрын
Not a pro - but the S1 Pro in the studio was hands down better, IMHO!
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
I thought it was slightly better on the stock settings but I rely on the advanced EQ of the JBL too much these days.
@moresflores96543 жыл бұрын
Its obvious the BOSE S1 PRO is the best,but the only issue of BOSE is less power wattage compare to JBL EON,but in the quality of sound BOSE is the winner.
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree. Maybe out of the box the Bose sounds better with some guitars etc but the JBL has an app with EQ that can be adjusted to make it sound more like the S1 Pro and adjusted per channel for each instrument. The problem with the Bose is that if a guitar does not sound good then there are not many ways to fix it.

The Bose S1 sounded much better than the JBL to me. I don't think they can add any gain to channel 3 through firmware. It would require a hardware change based on my experience with JBL's attempt to mod my JBL Eon One (original).
@aaronshortmusic5 жыл бұрын
I have heard that a firmware update may be able to add gain to that channel. I’ll keep you updated. In the meantime you can use a wireless system or small external preamp as a workaround.
@Cuki-ox2mk5 жыл бұрын
You can add digital gain. Just multiply by 2 in the DSP.
@Cuki-ox2mk5 жыл бұрын
I agree the Bose S1 sounds better than the JBL flat. But the JBL can sound much better properly EQed.

much better than on this video... can't say for the Bose comparison.

I didn’t think the full PA sounded good at all. The S1 Pro sounds really thin. The Eon One sounded a bit to middy.
@aaronshortmusic4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the PA was behind me so it’s not really fair but of course it sounded best in the room. The JBL just needs EQ from the app. The Bose either works for you or it doesn’t due to its limited EQ options.
@bennettshapiro77113 жыл бұрын
The change you want to channel three cannot be fixed with a firmware update. You want higher gain. That can only be fixed with a higher gain preamp… in other words, the problem isn’t firmware. It’s hardware. JBL can fix this in future versions of this speaker. But you should not expect a firmware fix. Start carrying around an external preamp.
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
Actually they could increase the gain with a firmware update but you are correct that it would not be true analogue gain. Having said that I have not had an issue as I find the two inputs with the mic setting are enough for a solo gig and some of my guitars are loud enough in the hi z input anyway.
@bennettshapiro77113 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic We tend to want a box like this to meet all of our possible needs. And this box gets close. But you’re still going to need a tuner. And you’re still going to need some kind of mute pedal, especially if you want to change guitars mid set. You might as well have a preamp pedal like the LR Baggs, that can serve all these functions.
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
@Bennett Shapiro I agree. I use the TC Helicon VL3X straight into one of the inputs most of the time! On occasion I will take the speaker by itself and a clip-on tuner. Works great either way!
