I am a Bose loyalist and I use Bose in my home studio and personal audio and based on that I was almost about to buy the S1 Pro when I just came across this video and went in to compare the EON ONE COMPACT and found it superior to S1, 4 ch compared to 3 ch of S1, Ducking, Base boost on Bluetooth, superior all range coverage and App control is fabulous at a lesser cost point.

So, I have paused this at 2:25 to make a comment about the bass response of the JBL EON ONE vs the Bose S1 Pro, before listening: Bose became a major audio powerhouse when they developed their long-wave-guide technology for small woofers. This technology essentially allows a relatively small driver to excite the resonant frequencies of a large mass of air contained within the volume of the wave-guide chamber, causing a much greater bass response than a conventionally mounted and ported woofer of the same size. In other words, the acoustic characteristics of the enclosed volume act as an amplifier, the way a resonant concert hall acts as an amplifier of sound played in the hall. Okay, I'll listen now ...

Thank you for these videos, I'm considering buying a JBL and your videos have been very helpful! To my ears, the S1 sounded a little more 'hi-fi', a little crisper than the JBL, which sounded a little bit more 'organic'. Sorry to use such soft terminology, they're just the best way I can think to explain it. I think I'd lean toward the JBL myself given the additional inputs, effects, and features. Over other PA systems I own, the Bose S1 has the advantage of portability. I own one and have the Bose Backpack. The battery power and reverb, tone match and Bluetooth are good too. Disadvantages: I would like one more input for an additional mic when playing guitar with 2 singers. Also being able to control output to house and separately to the S1 speakers while using it as a monitor would be helpful if hooking into a house system. I find that I can use it in several situations including doing music at a service on top of a mountain with no power. I have no experience with the JBL system.

First off thanks for this. I'm looking at the Bose, JBL and Mackie right now to purchase. From this video, using a pair of high end headphones, from ears that have set up everything from tiny pub room setups to 50,000 watt monster walls...the Bose actually sounded muddy. The JBL had fantastic clarity in comparison. On a gig I can see this having huge impact. It makes sense because Bose relies on wave guide tricks and DSP heavily and tends to tailor their sound to the average person who thinks the smile curve on the EQ sounds best. Going to watch your conclusion to see your final thoughts...this should be interesting!

I almost convinced myself S1 pro will be my first PA system. Until I found out about Jbl eon one. The thing that mostly changed my mind on Jbl over Bose, is the phantom power for mic's. With JBL I can use condenser mics also, and watching this comparison the sound difference is minimal, maybe I even like Jbl better, and that's the winner for me with all my affinity for Bose products.

The JBL has a new app that is not good. My current recommendations are the Bose S1 Pro+ for the smallest size and cool features or the EV Everse 8 for something larger and louder with phantom power.

I think the Bose sounds a little bit better in your test. A bit clearer and more refined (but only a tad, both sound great). The Bose seems like an awesome experience straight out of the box, plus it is so portable. However the JBL is quite a bit bigger so if you need a bit more power I suspect the JBL might be best. Both great speakers. I bought the Bose S1 Pro because Amazon had a great deal for a model with the battery for AUD$340 cheaper than I could find the JBL.

I'm in a similar boat, and looking at the duel kit of 2x Base S1 Pro for $1637 inc stands. Though I am tempted by the 2x S1 Pros + SBU1 Subwoofer kit for $2587..... I"m going to talk to some people in store, and do some samples. I'll mostly use the single or double speakers setup bluetooth, and on a table/floor, but the options are great as I want good sound for music at dance parties, and also to enjoy listening to quality audio.
@ubellubo
@ubellubo Жыл бұрын
@@JasonTankard Well you'll definitely want the subwoofers for dance music - but they're an expensive addition. My main interest is acoustic guitar and vocals. The Bose S1 is particularly popular with acoustic guitar players and it is great for that purpose. I can't tell you if it is the best option for dance music though (I haven't researched that thoroughly enough). The sound is good though, even just playing music files. The S1 truly is quite compact which I would think limits its abiltiy to provide a really strong bass. So if you are planning on buying a system without additional subs then I'd look at some other options too.
@JasonTankard
@JasonTankard Жыл бұрын
@@ubellubo cheers. I'm thinking to get 2 and the sub. But it'll also get used as a single or battery pair, because the sub mains power only. I know people with a single unit, and one dance school running a pair, and they highly recommend them. I looked at the JBL Eon One compact as an alternative, but it's not as clean, yes more bass, but lacks some versatility, asthetics and a really clean tone.

I purchased a JBL Eon One when it first came out. Got it mail order without auditioning it! Anyhow, the Mic PreAmps were kind of pathetic. Months later, JBL admitted that they needed work. So I drove almost a hundred miles to a JBL repair center, and they worked on it, replaced some transistors or whatever. That improved the volume from the Mic inputs by about 30%. But the best sound was when I used a mixer and connected that by 1/4 inch cables into the back of the Eon One. The Eon One Pro replaced the Eon One, advertising new Mic Pre-amps but I still have my Eon One so I would not know or don't care to know how much better! At that time I had auditioned the Bose L1 that pricewise competed with the Eon One, and I surely prefer the Eon One. But even the Bose series has new products out. Lastly, I also own a Bose S1 Pro. Am very happy with it. Again, volume output using a mic plugged right into one of the mic inputs, is much lower than if I use a mixer. Seems like there must be some company across the seas that makes pre-amps for many of these speakers! :)

I m also JBL Eon One former user, mine works fine, though. I am really considering "upgrading" to one of these two. The main reason for me is that I am playing smaller gigs, and I usually cannot turn master higher than to 1/2, thus I feel like I would appreciate something smaller and possibly more compact instead. Could you take a moment to compare Bose S1 to your JBL Eon One, pls?
@OnlineMD
@OnlineMD 2 жыл бұрын
@@pluckybreeze last year, I think about 9 months ago, I had to send my Bose S1 Pro to Bose for work on the hardware as it would not upgrade the hardware to the latest version. They were very efficient, did the work at a very reasonable cost and sent it back within ten days or so. It is an excellent speaker but I'd suggest you AUDITION anything you buy. Particularly the VOLUME of the speaker based on your needs, without a mixer. In the $1200 price range are the Eon One Mk2 and the Bose L1 Pro8. I don't think the Bose S1 Pro compares favorably to those but again, it may just be what you are looking for; check it out!!!
@OnlineMD
@OnlineMD 2 жыл бұрын
@@pluckybreeze I played with my S1 Pro just now, after several months. I used to feel that the microphone volume is too low but today I found that if I turned up the treble and bass way up in the microphone input, that helped the volume quite a bit. And the reverb for the microphone is pretty darn good. I could buy a microphone volume booster like a Cloudlifter but I believe those need 48 V phantom power which the S1 Pro does not provide. Now that is a big negative I think. That aside, the sound quality is excellent.

Grate video man! I think that everyone of us who likes both the Bose and the JBL brands can thank you for taking your time on this review. Though I am addicted to Bose and nothing can change that, in my years they both sound great for the purpose that they can maximum handle! Way to go for the battery power option when is needed! Well, here comes the differences between what people like and choose and where is your purpose level set. Though both amps are sweethearts, I will not take any one of them to the gig! (we are talking small coffee shops gigs). Simply because for this purpose, in my opinion, there are much better options than these two! My belief is that a professional performer will not look into the small price differences when it comes to choosing THE BEST! And when you want to sound like never before and get the very best result in a small environment, you can go for the best compact system out there! That is the Bose L1 compact system with the ToneMatch mixer or another small professional mixer! It is not just me who says that, but also the audience! They will admit that they were blown away by the sound quality. Good luck with your JBL at the following gig! Can't wait to hear about that experience!

There's a fair few comments on the Internet about it clipping at volumes that are not high, I'm interested to know what your experience was. Thanks for the thorough review. Have a question concerning the JBL which I couldn't seem to find the answer to by looking at the manual. Does the master volume level effect the output volume of the pass-through and/or headphone outputs?

Mike Sales Sings I’d appreciate if you can chime back in to let me/us know. I’m interested in (occasionally) using the JBL as a mixer/monitor and then lining out to the main system for larger setups. This is why I’m curios as to whether or not the master volume effects these outputs.
@mikesaleslive
@mikesaleslive 4 жыл бұрын
@@samvide I didn't check out the unit with headphones, but the levels from the pass-through were louder when the JBL was louder. Thing is though, I didn't really work too much with the gain staging, so I'm not entirely sure if the pass-through was reflecting the master volume, channel volume or channel gain, but since I pretty much ran everything between 8 & 10 it didn't matter to me, I was just trying squeeze as much headroom out of it before distortion...and it did very well!
@samvide
@samvide 4 жыл бұрын
Mike Sales Sings - Thanks for your reply. Still without a definitive answer to my question but I thank you just the same. What I’m trying to find out is, if using the JBL as a mixer/monitor and then lining out to a main system, would adjusting the “monitor” volume also adjust the volume of the main system? In such a scenario, from my perspective, ideally the channel volumes would effect the main speakers but the master volume would not. This flexibility would make it easier to adjust the “monitor” independently from the main system (as one would typically want to do when using a monitor).
@mikesaleslive

@@samvide I'm using the JBL at the gig tomorrow, so if I have time, I'll daisy chain out of the pass through, adjust the master and see what happens. The channel & master controls are the same, you select what you're adjusting. There's also the app that comes into play, so it's a little confusing as to what controls what when, but I'm working on it, so I may have an answer by Saturday or maybe someone else will answer before that.

In this video I thought the Bose sounded better on most of your examples. The JBL sounded just a little more "midrangey" than the Bose. However, when I tested them side by side at GC with my acoustic (k&K) and vocals, I thought the JBL sounded quite a bit better-i.e. fuller/more robust- and that was without using the app for EQ etc, just the on-board EQ and verb. Anyway, I bought the JBL, which has replaced the Fishman Loudbox mini charge ( which sounds maybe a little richer on my guitar, but the vocals aren't as good, plus it's heavier).

Excellent review !! Thank you for taking the time to produce it :) If I may add a few notes though from my own experience.... when my JBL Compact arrived it came with a dead battery which would not charge. After removing the battery and cleaning the contacts with electrical cleaner it still would not charge. I had to plug it in overnight to actually get the charging cycle to start. Once charged I tried several times to update the firmware, but kept getting an "update failed due to board error". The main problem is that the bluetooth feature was useless.. several connection failed or disconnects every minute or so when trying to use the bluetooth features. Solution? Make sure you include the cost of a new cell phone or tablet with the latest bluetooth technology. After 700.00 to upgrade my phone it now works as it should. Is it better than my Bose S1 Pro ? In my opinion, no. My Bose sounds good and Im set up in about 5 minutes. My Bose has performed outside in 90 degree direct sun and 45 degree rainy days and has also face planted from its stand to a hardwood floor from my cat knocking it over and it still works and sounds great... I think Ill be sending the JBL to a new home. I need need equipment that is consistent and reliable... I really appreciate you doing this. I play at the beach every week for a few hundred people. Everything is rechargeable and wireless. After buying and trying several rechargeable options including, the New Soundboks, Anchor Audio Liberty 2 and the Roland BA 330; the Bose S1 Pro simply sounds the best. I tried the first version of the JBL EON ONE in the music store. It sounded "cheap" and had a comparably low threshold for distortion. I'm not seeing this in the other comments, but using headphones to listen to your video, I heard a very noticeable improvement in the level of clarity from the Bose. The JBL EON ONE, just sounded muddier to me...I felt like I could hear the price difference. I also had a bad experience with connectivity and latency when using wireless software to control eq, so I wouldn't want to use something that doesn't sound good without being connected to an app. Trouble is, as you mentioned, the S1 Pro is not quite loud enough. I've managed to get some extra headroom by running the guitar and vocal separately into a Sound Devices MixPre-D into a Ashly 31 band stereo eq and into channels 1 & 2 of the Bose. It sounds great, but I'm essentially I'm tying up money and carrying an 8 space rack around to squeeze a few more DB out of the system. Sennheiser recently came out with the XSW-D systems. I bought 3: used one for guitar & one for vocal to go directly into channels 1 & 2 of one Bose S1 PRO and then used the 3rd to daisy chain to the second Bose S1 Pro but discovered the threshold for distortion dropped so dramatically as to make daisy-chaining pointless. I'm likely going to buy an additional Sennheiser XSW-D, to "Y" the 2 incoming signals and send them to the two Bose S1 Pro's, but I'm STILL going to have to use the rack when I need the extra headroom. SO...I'm waiting patiently to get your live gig results, because if you say it's significantly louder, I'm going to probably buy a JBL EON ONE and check out the sound for myself. I feel like the real answer is going to come when Bose or QSC invents a battery powered speaker with an SPL of 120db or louder...thanks again for the work you've done here; very helpful!

Using it at my gig last night I would say it has about as much volume as I would expect from a 120 speaker. The tone was really great too. I’ll have my final review up soon. I agree about someone making a higher end speaker like this but I am not sure there is a market for it. I love the XSW system as well but lately the guitar system has been suffering from interference. Connectivity issues can plague any system, especially in a city.

Kuan Ju Liu Thwnk you for watching. The great thing with the JBL is the advanced EQ settings in the app allow you to tweak them sound. With the S1 there is currently no way to do that...

"I'm not seeing this in the other comments, but using headphones to listen to your video, I heard a very noticeable improvement in the level of clarity from the Bose. The JBL EON ONE, just sounded muddier to me...." I hear what you are saying about the Compact's "muddier" sound vs the S1 Pro's "clarity". To me (and perhaps unfairly) this has always been the JBL house sound and one I've heard in other videos of the previous EON speakers compared to the S1 Pro. Nevertheless, one could argue that the S1 Pro has the opposite problem: it overly emphasizes the presence region, to the point that some have called it bright. Call up one of oluv's gadgets videos of the S1 Pro and you might also hear the same, particular with the S1 Pro running full throttle outdoors. IIRC he even called the S1 Pro "sizzling" or something to that effect. However, given one report of the Compact being too forward in upper mids/treble, I wonder if this may simply be an issue with the difference in vertical dispersion between the speakers. The S1 Pro has a linear (vertical) array of mid/treble drivers, and Aaron's near-field microphone position may have simply been in a bit of a dispersion null between the Compact's drivers. In other words, that muddy sound from the Compact might not be audible from a more reasonable distance. That would jive with Aaron's initial positive impression of the Compact from his gig. Regardless of my amateur audio theorizing, I also hear the Compact's apparent "muddiness" vs the S1 Pro. This is most obvious with Aaron's "processed" vs "no processing" comparisons, where the S1 Pro instantly shows the changes whereas I have to listen hard for them with the Compact. *Aaron*: thanks for making these videos (all of them, including the inspiring one on the singer's diet). They're really awesome.
