JBL Flip3 Battery Replacement (How to DIY)

This video explains step-by-step how to replace the battery of the JBL Flip3 wireless Bluetooth battery.
In case you battery does not charge anymore or the speaker does not last for a long time, it may be time to replace the battery. A new battery can be found very cheap online. The process is easy and can be done with minimal tools and knowledge.

I just performed this repair this evening. Your instructions were very clear and the video gave a very good perspective on seeing where things were. I added two tools to the mix. First, I used a small flathead screwdriver to hold up the grill as I was initially peeling that off. That helped give a little lift/leverage. Second, a small pair of needlenose pliers was helpful in pulling away the cut glue and putty, as well as to pick up one or two of those very small screws. Thanks for making this video. It felt good to be able to repair something rather than having to buy a new one. Hopefully it charges and I'm good to go!

Unfortunately, I have to report that the repair did not work. It won’t charge and therefore won’t power up. I have to go back in again and see what’s going on. Maybe the thin ribbon cable got bent.

I am taking it all apart again to see if I can figure out why the speaker won’t work on battery. If I plug it into AC , as if charging, it powers up and works fine. I’m going to try recharging while it’s disassembled to see if it was simply not charged enough to work. I’m using a Cameron Sino battery CS-JMF300SL. Maybe I have the wrong battery?

Great video, managed to replace my battery - thanks! I had several screws with stripped heads that wouldn’t budge and I had to break off the plastic case around them - so if anyone is thinking of attempting this maybe see if you can actually take your Flip apart first before you buy the battery.

Pay attention to the length of the machine screws as you take the Flip 3 apart. The passive radiator machine screws are slightly longer than the machine screws that hold the body parts together. If you try to use the longer screws on the body parts they bottom out before they snugly hold the parts together. As you remove the screws during disassembly consider labeling where they came from. It still was an excellent DIY video with great closeups of the disassembly and reassembly.

This video was very clear and instructive. I was able to follow it without any issue, and the replacement went smoothly. However, I didn't have any hot glue, nor RTV, so I used rubber cement. This seemed to work fine, but I am getting some resonance at high volume from one of the passive speakers, the side where the putty was in place. Could the resonance be due to improper plugging of this hole?? If so, I can disassemble and add a layer of RTV or hot glue. Thanks!

Thanks for the tutorial. I replaced the battery, but now the LEDs and the rest of the buttons don t work. I can t adjust the volume, can t see how much battery I have left, nor I cannot adjust the volume. Any advice please?

How likely is the battery to catch fire while prying at it? My jbl flip 3 battery is inclosed and only accessible from one end. Obviously I don't mean pry, pry. But still, just curious because it's in there pretty snuggly with the adhesive and I'm not completely sure if the old battery is swollen or not. Should I bother with the heat gun method or no?

Good video. My model was slightly different with the access to the battery on the end and a ribbon cable in between. My batteri was also very swollen and impossible to pull out. Had to drill (non pointy hss drill to not damage battery) a 6mm hole to the other end of the battery compartment which could be accessed from the other end of the unit and push it out with an allen wrench like I noticed someone do on a newer model with better access. Got the job done in case someone struggles with the same issue.

This is the much easier type of JBL flip 3. Access to the battery is much better. Got new battery for about $10 but replacing will be more sophisticated than on your type...

I wanted to ask you what kind of symptoms did your Flip 3 have before you realized that the battery needed to be replaced. This is what my Flip 3 is doing.... I charge overnight to full, but the charge only last about 5 minutes then it goes dead. When I plug in my micro usb it looks like only 1 or 2 of the 5 charging lights are used. Also, the power works for ON, but I cannot power OFF unless I hold ALL 4 buttons (phone, volume up & down, and bluetooth) on the grill down at the same time. I am hoping that the battery strength or charging capabilities is causing the issue with the power on and off button problem for me. Thank you in advance for any insight that you may have.

Hi, I could imagine that a bad battery is causing the problems you experience. Although the powering off situation is a bit odd. I replaced mine because of short battery life and intermittent audio drops.

@@MegaSafetyFirst I just replaced the battery and everything is working fine. I did run into a little challenge... The replacement battery had wires that were thicker than the original. Putting the bass radiator speaker back on, when testing the bass with the volume up.... The rubber speaker cone was hitting against the wires making a fluttering sound. I had to reopen and make the opening for the wires going from the battery to the connector larger. Making sure the wires were below the top of the opening solved the fluttering noise. The new battery solved my issues. Thank you for your video and comments!

I get that these are sealed to make them splash/water resistant..........but all these kinds of tech could be designed to that the battery is located just beneath the surface so that the sealed cover can be easily removed and the battery easily replaced so that the cover can then be easily resealed and securely re-placed. I wonder why they don't do that routinely? (That's a rhetorical question. ; ) Meanwhile, we have overflowing landfills full of toxic stuff that will virtually never biodegrade.

I bought the same battery as you (Cameron Sino) for just £16.99 from here in the UK. I also used a hot- glue gun as you did. The other opening tools I already had from fixing phones, iPad etc. On a side note , I'd suggest , anybody else undertaking this to buy a good set of screwdrivers it will make it so much easier (Philips 00 is what's required).I have a Stanley Fat Max electronic set in my toolbag (although I'm a carpenter by trade ). I used one for over three years before the battery degraded noticeably. But I guess it can vary. I even still use a JBL Charge one, which is over ten years old and it still has the original battery.

Very likely. When the battery is ok, it should not push on the cover. Does the battery feel puffy? Or does it feel firm?

Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) batteries do not like to be stored at full or empty charge for extended time, if not using any electronic device for extended time try to store them at 50% charge (storage voltage) and the Li-Po will last much longer..

Hi Jessica, what I use to remove the old battery is an Issesamo - it's a thin metal prying tool to dismantle iPhones, iPads etc. Just slip it under the battery and work your way around it slowly and it will loosen up. They're are about £5 or so pounds on eBay/Amazon. Hope that helps you 🙂

In case you feel confident to take it apart then I’d suggest to do that first. Check the battery and see if its outside foil looks bloated. That is a clear indication for a bad battery. In case it is bloated, order a new battery afterwards. That way you don’t waste money.

Once you unplugged the battery. And switched to taking off the top near charging port you lost me. And yes i have a Flip 3. There is no big gap to get under the port like that on mine. And no indication that it can split in half like that. Its solid platic with no seem.
