I'm sure you already know this, but if you want to eliminate bump steer the pivot points of the steering rack must be in line with the pivot points of your A-arms. Single A-arms don't "inherently" have bump steer; they have camber gain on compression (not necessarily bad for cornering, as camber is what you want). If you could find a way to mount that steering rack so its pivot points line up with your A-arms, your bump steer will be massively reduced to the point where it isn't even noticeable if not completely resolved. That being said, you're the first guy I've ever seen make single A-arm independent suspension all the way around. I'm very curious to see how it works out, because double A-arms all around are a lot more difficult. This could be a much easier way to go fully independent if it works! I may end up using your design for my own build down the line. And I've just gotta mention, it's awesome to see that this is based off of a Manco Dingo. I have one (much more stock than yours lol) and one of my biggest gripes is the lack of suspension!
@JBRACINGinc
@JBRACINGinc 4 жыл бұрын
Ya I was saying for my situation I was going to have bump steer because I don't have the room on the front of the kart to have it inline with the arms. I did drive it around for a little bit (before the homemade steering rack broke) and it handled great hardly noticed any bump steer. And suspension is a major improvement. I love the look of the dingo karts and I'm trying to keep it looking like one, I just don't want to have my spine compressed when I'm driving it, I sure you know what I'm talking about lol.

Any way we could get a video from you with a full view of how you did your set up on the a arms in the back where are the shocks and axle bearings Mount to. Because I've been wanting to do a IRS set up a my buggy that I've been custom building / modifying from a yard cart over the last year using U joints like you did but I plan on using double A arms for the IRS but been trying to figure out the easiest way to make a wheel hub for the axle to slide through that connects to both a arms but may end up just doing single a arm like you did depending on how the video goes of you actually test riding it and how you went about making your setup for the IRS. P. S great videos on this build and breaking down how you Queen about making all this and not making it sound too complicated more or less and layman terms if you will LOL
@JBRACINGinc
@JBRACINGinc 3 жыл бұрын
My plan for the next video is going to be a reveal/driving, and then a build break down after that. The kart is done I just decided to redo the chain tensioner, then I'll knock those videos out. As for your IRS if you are using the u joints the same way I am you have to use single a arm. If you use a double a arm the axle shaft has to be able to get longer and shorter as the suspension travels. That's why a lot of double a arm suspensions have cv shafts, they allow the axle to slide in and out in the joint. PS the kart rips and I haven't had any issues with the suspension

Given what you said about the current gearing and top speed, the new top speed should be 37.5 with a 14/48T sprocket combo. IMO, I'd go with 15/43 to get a nice 44-45mph top speed, that way you have some overhead and can cruise at 1/2-3/4 max rpm in 3rd gear and be between 22-33mph without wringing your engine to death. Plus you should still have plenty of torque, especially given how the Honda Grom is a similarly weighted vehicle at 125cc and is geared for a 65-ish mph top speed and scoots grown men around just fine (Grom's a 5-speed though).

You could eliminate bump steer by using a solid beam front axle. Full independent double wish bone front suspension is complex and wonderful but has lots of parts to bend break and get out of alignment. Why not avoid all of that and use a simple solid axle with coil overs.

@JBRACINGinc
@JBRACINGinc 2 жыл бұрын
Good question but no.. as long as the control arm rod ends are in line (on the same axis) with the u joint (like how I showed it in the video) the axle and the arm move the same because they pivot on the same axis and the bearing slipping on the axle would not be possible. Now if you put the u joint ahead or behind the rod ends then they would pivot separately from each other and the the bearing would slip or bind. I hope this makes sense. The kart has taken a good beating and been in 2 wrecks and the suspension has been holding up and working perfectly

Front springs are too soft, just your weight was enough to bottom it, And front wheels are too short you want tall tires on the front for easier and better handling, just look at dirt bikes tall front wheel short rear wheel, it not a dragster after all...
