Paint a beautiful summer day in a Maine garden. The flowers are blooming in so many colors. A gnarled old apple tree frames the grassy path leading to the cool woods.
The garden is the lovely Thuya Gardens in Northeast Harbor, Maine. You should definitely visit it if you go to Maine, but the ideas for this painting can be used to paint any garden.
Happy Painting!
Jennifer

So interesting to see how you left the whites on the flower bushes to enchant- and the road. Learnt a lot.

Lovely demonstration. I would love to see how you decide what to leave white. After watching this demo I realized that is where I go wrong and I get these muddy flowers. As a little aside I got a good chuckle at one time when I thought you said “to paint in some boulder ducks”. I looked for those ducks and then broke out laughing when I realized you simple said some boulder darks.

Hi Jennifer, I saved the photo weeks ago after watching this video, but had trouble finding it again. My bad. I forget to add the attributes and source for items I copy. It was worth every minute I spent on the search for you, so this time, I subscribed. I love how you describe the layers. My favorite is when you addressed garden light as sparkle. That made me have a big smile

I'm so glad you liked it! It's funny how in oil you start with the subject, but with watercolor the subject is often last, especially if backlit. I like working around the entire painting all the time. Happy Painting!

I know it is simple for you but so much goes wrong with mine: how thin/think my paint mixtures need to be, the perfect timing for the perfect amount of mingling to happen, etc.etc
@JBranchStudio
@JBranchStudio 5 жыл бұрын
I painted this one in one go, so if you stick with the order of backlit area to greens, to green shadows, to some flowers, then tree, and darker greens, then fun bright flowers, you don't have to worry about what stage everything is at for drying. I usually have fairly saturated paint mixtures, so to where they's still transparent but rich in color. You're right about lots of practice though.

Beautiful painting, fabulous video. Thank You! The only thing that would have made it better would have been to place the camera so we could see your palette. I realize the camera is placed to maximize the view of the painting. It just helps me to watch the colors on the palette and how the brush is loaded. Regardless, I very much enjoyed watching this video, and I know I can learn from it, so I’ll be watching it again and again! Also, I’m subscribing to your channel. Thank you! 🌹

Josie, thanks for subscribing. About half my videos I do a full palette shot. Sometimes I'm lazy and concentrate on the overhead camera and painting rather than play with 3 cameras. :) I can't wait to see what you're inspired to paint. Gardens are so much fun for artists!

Stunning. And a great tutorial to go with it. As always! One of the great water colour KZbin channels. I also love seeing your palette. I use the M Graham paints which I think you do as well. They are so soft that I fear irreparably polluting a colour well hen I go in to the well with a loaded brush of another colour - so I find myself cleaning my brush every time I dip into another colour. That is tedious, and I would like to change. So I like to see how the masters manage the free and loose use of the palette and the colour wells, without polluting your colour wells with a loaded brush
@JBranchStudio
@JBranchStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugh! Thank you so much! I know what you mean about polluting the colors. You can see an old palette solution of mine in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6WkZ2ODZtSlr7M However, what it comes down to is I have 2 Azo Yellows, one for mixing greens, one for mixing reds. Same setup for Nickel Azo Yellow. This way I don't even have to think about going into a well. I just pick the blue side or red side. I hope this helps!

Thanks, Candy! It's an old painting of a daffodil field in the middle of Talledega National Forest. There must have been an old homestead there at some point but just the clearing and daffodils were left by the time I painted there. It was absolutely amazing, the really old varieties of daffodils that smell like heaven. I painted there every year for a long time. Unfortunately, the forest has swallowed it up now. The last time I went, just a few were left. I'm working on my own daffodil field though! It's pretty gorgeous right now. I've been sketching it almost every day. You can see some sketches on Instagram.

Since I am a gardener, this is one of my all time favorite, Is it in Thuya gardens? Gorgeous!
@JBranchStudio
@JBranchStudio 5 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely Thuya Gardens. I think what's so wonderful about Maine gardens in general is everything blooms in a short period of time, while here it starts now with daffodils and lasts through November. I enjoy the slow unfolding of the seasons here but all at once is pretty spectacular!
