"OCEAN is a very interesting aspect of my life. It is part of my DNA. It conveys all things I can't put into words.
Life, loss, love, spirit. As I evolve so too does 'Ocean'. The song was first recorded as part of my first album/cassette,
"Searching For Heritage", which I sold when I busked, then for my first self-titled studio album 12 years ago -- "John Butler (1998)".
The song has been watched online incredibly over 25 million times in various formats, nearly always live, be it from MusicMax Sessions or from one of the many festivals I have had the pleasure to play. I'd like to thank you for your continued support over all these years; it means so much to me. I would like to thank you by offering this first studio recording of 'Ocean' in over a decade as a free download.
I recorded it in my favourite studio, The Compound here in Fremantle Western Australia, a studio you helped me build.
This marks just another fleeting moment in a career that is very much ongoing.
I look forward to bringing you many new songs and albums into the future and continuing this amazing journey with you ALL.
THANK YOU,
J.B"

My friend and brother Dusty Wallace showed me this song in the parking lot of a hotel we were staying in for a ironworking job. I was 20 and he was 18 , both of us played guitar and were simply astounded at John’s prowess and awestruck by the beauty of the song . One month later I travelled back to Ohio with him and stayed for 3 weeks, Dusty gave me my first dose of LSD and it was this single most life changing experience event I’ve ever had, short of being born. Dusty sat with me as I rode the waves of bliss and as I sunk down to the depths of despair. He was there as i weeped over the revelations I was having about how badly I’ve treated people, about how I’ve ignored people who love me. 8 years later and I still have never bonded with another’s soul like we did that day. A few months after I returned home, into a life that no longer made sense to me and bore very little resemblance to who I was, Dusty died in a car accident, it’s hard to describe how broken I was. I had just started a new job and had about $100 to my name, but I loaded my car and made the 8 hour trip up to Ohio for his funeral. Right as I was walking out after talking with his parents, his dad ran after me and handed me a $100 bill. I still can’t make sense of this, he had no idea that I had a spent my literal last dollar to attend the funeral…it was very mystical. This song always takes me back to that time, it takes me back to that day with Dusty as my life changed forever, to me part of his soul lies within this song. I cry every time I hear it. Dusty my friend, I miss you, almost every step I’ve taken since you passed, I’ve taken with you in mind. I wish I could thank you for the impact you had on me, because of you I’m a more loving and empathic person, I can’t imagine my life if I had not met you . I will see you when I see you my dear friend.

I feel you, man. Lost my one and only really close friend Max, close in much the same way as you described your friend. He succumbed at the age of 36, quite unexpectedly, to undiagnosed cancer in the tissues around his heart. It broke me completely for a long long time. About two years later his mother phoned me, she’d found my number on the back of an envelope when she’d finally got the strength to start sorting through his stuff, it’d been in boxes in her garage since he’d died. She just talked, picked me up, put me on my feet, gave me strength and told me how to live again. How she knew just what to say and how she’d had the strength herself to worry about how I was doing I’ll never know. Since that day I’ve tried to live life in a way that I know Max would’ve been proud of, to be kinder than I’d have been otherwise, to be more forgiving like he was, to listen more and speak with more forethought as he did. Most of all to share the joy of being alive and to laugh at myself, as he did. That’s his legacy and what an amazing, enduring, gift it’s been. 🤝

Well put, this song has so much emotion behind it. I finally have woken up as some say after a brain condition and depression and anxiety attacks. I finally feel free! I see life so differently. Everyone has value and is beautiful in thier own way. This song has gotten me thru so much as I keep coming back to ground myself. I would've never thought I could be so spiritual or emotionally changed but I am now and I love it. I play guitar as well similarly. CX take care and I hope you have a happy life and good health.

I took my son in law to to the Red Rocks show in 2019. He didn't know much about John back then. After that show he was hooked. My wife passed away later that year. This song in particular still brings back all those wonderful memories of that night and the love I still have for her. She now has another grandson that she never had the chace to meet but still part of her lives. He's autistic and when he's having a rough time of things Johns music is one of the few things that'll calm hin down. John has touched the lives many with his beautiful music. Much love.

In 2014 I saw John Butler live here in Italy, it was the first time I attended a live gig all by myself, alone, and I saw something I still remember with chills. During the middle section of this song (around @5:17) some people in front of me moved like they were about to make a circle pit. I wasn't able to tell what was going on until I stepped forward: they disposed themselves in a circle, making enough space for a couple who was dancing and dancing and dancing as if no one was around them, just a boy and a girl smiling, holding each other, kissing each other and jumping as high as they could. Their eyes sparkled so much they completely stole the show from John. All our eyes were focused on them; someone looked away and made just a quick and shy eye contact with other people like they were all asking to each other silently but euforically "Are you seeing this?" It was all a majestic display of love, wonder and joy. Still today, everytime I hear this song, I think about that couple and hope they are still living the time of their lives.

When I was younger, learning new songs on the guitar it'd be my goal to play it exactly as the original artist played it. One day I decided to try to learn this song, and I realised as JBT said that he never played this song the same way twice. That it constantly evolved like a living thing. And trying (and failing) to mimic it, opened doors to me. To what music should be, dynamic, full of expression, freedom to add things and take away and make mistakes because that's where the life of the song lies. This song revolutionised everything about my guitar playing to me.

Great insight! I am a musician as well and you are on it man. Sometimes the mistakes sound good, especially when a guitarist is really ripping it and he hits a dirty note, and realizes it, but, embraces it, and actually leans into it. Almost always non musicians won't even be able to hear it, but they love it. It's the mole on the face of a beautiful woman.

I had the opportunity to hear this exceptional piece, live, and had the privilege of interacting with him, during an informal concert in Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in 2016. He just showed up with his guitar, borrowed a capo from a student and played this piece on a six-string guitar. It was the most beautiful evening of my life! I got to ask him what made him write this piece, and this is what he said, "This song is like a map of myself. You'll notice that it's never the same. All the versions are obviously different in a few sections though the entire structure and musical arrangement remain the same. So, every time I play it, I am basically the same, but also have changed in little ways as I go along in life. It's like a blueprint of my brain, an imprint of my soul at the moment I play it." * *I paraphrased, but mostly retained the key words he used.

A highly excellent thought. Someone made that guitar and someone made you and I. A worn and beaten guitar shows use, which is what the maker wanted and intended. I am worn and beaten because I walk to good places where our Maker intended and produce good things out of the abundance of the good stored into me. I once bought a guiar and and stand for it and put it in a prominent place in my house so that if my children had the least bit of curiosity about it they could pick it up. There are zero moms who would let their kids wreck a guitar; more likely is the case that the guitar will sit in a closet or a corner and never be played. My kids instead played horns in band.

+BeasterDenBeast In all seriousness, while it's a very beautiful song, it's not that technically demanding and you could absolutely play this someday. The composition is the truly impressive thing here! Your biggest hurdle is probably getting all the mics and pedals, as there are quite a few on display here.

+OnyxDeity I've played guitar for 15 years. In all seriousness, this is about as technically demanding as you can get on an acoustic. Also, something you may not know about this piece is that a lot of this song is improvised and changed every time he plays it. He talks about how a song shouldn't be stagnant and that every time he plays this song it's a reflection of his life at that time. It's actually the reason he named the song Ocean because of it's ever-changing style.

+BeasterDenBeast I'm currently learning it, and I'm about 9 minutes in. I'm not an amazing guitarist and the song is actually not that difficult. The way I play it is obviously not comparable to his, but the song isn't as demanding as it looks. just give it a shot!

Leedy Scalemodeller I’ve came back to this song over the years. Happy in a relationship? Show her this song. Broke up? Cry to this song. New job? Celebrate with this song. Chilling and feeling good? Listen to this song. Man, it’s been a life saver for me through the last few years. This song always puts me in a better place, regardless the situation. Much love from the US.

This song makes you appreciate life more. For 13 minutes, all the shit, all the problems, all the worries, all the fears go away. Life is laid bare and reduced to the essentials. To watch the emotion is pure art. The sound and images take you away to another place. This is truly a religious experience.

Both this and concert version are the best music pieces i ever heard in my entire life... I listen to this for years through my hard times, depression, only things that helped me forget a cheating wife was this music and running... To this day i get the goosebumps every time, especially mid song whene it reaches alot of notes all together somthing is there something yelling loudly saying the absolute truth but you can't hear it... That's where i crying usually... it's beyond dimensions it's like seeing your consciousness it's like instead of blood there is oceans in your vessels and you can smell it through your whole body... This is how feel about this music and i can't describe it but it helped me so much... Thank you John.🌊
