Hi, my name is Diego Butzke and I’m the Backhoe Loader Product Manager for JCB North America. Let’s talk about a sensitive subject in the industry - after treatment.
Keeping backhoes up to date with the latest engine regulations is not an easy job, however, at JCB we take it very seriously and developed an approach that impacted our customers the least. Simply put, we’ve made after-treatment as invisible as it can be on our machines, aiming to reduce downtime and avoid costly maintenance.
Our backhoes, up to 74 horsepower, do not need diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) nor do they need a diesel particulate filter (DPF). That means you don’t need to worry about refilling a DEF tank every now and then, stop the machine for hours to regen the after-treatment system or even stop the machine to replace a costly after-treatment filter.
All our backhoes over 75 horsepower will need DEF, which is standard in the industry for engines with that power and up. However, they do not need a DPF - that means you don’t need to stop the machine to replace a costly after-treatment filter.
Many customers ask me how we were able to achieve that, and my answer is “smart engineering.” JCB was able to develop an engine solution that complied with all regulations and was invisible to the eyes of the customers. This engine solution improves machine uptime and reduces maintenance costs - everything you wanted to hear.
