I am the Oliver Broome, who conducted the pathetic recording of Frank Merrick's 1st.Piano Concerto with the composer as soloist. I recall that we made the impossible attempt to rehearse/record the whole work in one three-hour session and, by the time we had reached the final movement, there was no time to even rehearse it. The frantic attempts of the amateur players to sight-read in front of microphones are patently and painfully obvious. I am not proud of the results and had assumed, until I chanced on this website yesterday, that the recording had never been issued! I had never heard the recording.

Many rare concertos posted on KZbin were not recorded under the best conditions: poor sound recording, amateur players, etc ... What really matters is the pleasure to discover a rare work.

I agree that it's not the best of performances. I think even the composer himself made a couple of faux-pas! But Oliver you made music. That's the most important thing. I salute you sir.

This recording was made in about 1962 by John Shuttleworth who went on to found and run Merridian Records. He died a couple of years ago aged 99. I was present as an 16 year old assistant. I think it is the Beckenham Symphony Orchestra. It was released on Rare Recorded Editions.

My music teacher was a pupil of Frank Merrick. I never knew who he was until recently. Thanks for the post.

Just discovered this recording of a concerto by my namesake! We're not related (as far as I know!). Fascinating to hear.

Thank you for sharing this incredibly rare concerto. Perhaps the performance is not accurate and passionate enough to make you feel the piece memorable.

Am I pressuming right that this is the younger Frank Merrrick? Because Father and Son had the same name and both recived Doctorates in music.

Hi guys, I have found my great grandmothers personal book and inside it is a handwritten music piece signed frank merrick jr. Does anyone know where or who I could go to, to get more information please? Anoushka

I have passed your message onto Frank Merrick's son Paul Merrick, who isn't on KZbin. He is very interested in hearing from you. He has given me permission to give his email address paul.merrick1@sky.com and hopes you will contact him.

Presuppositions can ruin a potentially good experience. Never having heard this work before or hearing of the composer, I had no notion of how the music was/is supposed to be performed. I felt free then to decide on the merit of my listening experience. The sound was muffled, however, I would love to hear this work in relationship to a quality recording. I found the performance more than satisfactory.

With a decent performance this piece would be worth listening to. Frank Merrick in his prime was a pianist to be reckoned with, unfortunately this is just a faint shadow of the great man. The orchestral peformance is poor to say the least, but I was able to hear this very rare piece which is the main thing. It's best not to condemn this performance but to read between the lines and thank those who took part.

I'm not a relative, but this piano concerto is not my baby! I prefer real romantic ones!

A good effort under what I understand were difficult circumstances. The concerto itself lacks a couple of good "tunes" and some of the orchestration is a little odd. But thumbs up from me.
