I just watched Hillbilly Elegy and as presented it was his mother’s addiction that led to his erratic dysfunctional upbringing. His grandmother likely kept multiple guns as a warning to her once alcoholic wife beating husband who lived down the street. There was a lot of trauma and instability in his young life. He was lucky to have a stubborn but caring grandmother, without her he might have never left town. I still don’t see how Project 2025 is going to help anyone but an upscale ruling class. Other than the addiction part we lived semi-parallel lives. I was raised by a single mom in the 1960s and early 1970s in New England, who worked, became a nurse, and collected welfare off and on at the same time. Yet we always felt poor. I was a bit misguided as a teen who went into the military, went to college, got married with 2 kids and eventually got my PhD. If not for the government aid received when growing up, we might have fallen through the cracks. I am grateful to the democrats who provided the safety net and have always voted that way and will again in this election.

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio (maybe 30+ miles south of Middletown) and there is some truth to what Vance said in book about the migration of people to the Middletown and beyond, seeking opportunity but he plays fast and lose with qualities of the prevalent culture. J.D. Vance's book is somewhat credible till the last couple of chapters and then it is obvious he seeking some kind of political advancement. He is absolutely a phony.

Problem is most media organisations these days (unlike in the past) do not have working class folk in decision-making positions ie working class folk are more likely to be cleaners, catering staff etc but those employed as producers, editors, writers, etc are generally from same class with similar educations, holidays, experiences, friend groups etc and thus have the same outlook which they disseminate to the rest of the country.

This sounds like people denying negative reality. But if Trump's own supporters won't vote for him, what exactly about their blinders is worrying you? I'm actually reading Vance's book, and, I watched the same rust belt death hit Buffalo in the same time period. He's telling the truth. It is very possible that those who couldn't find jobs have largely left, just as they left Buffalo, and only affluent or white collar people are left. And Buffalo did have affluent suburbs.
