Salut Maïa et Charlie ! Another very informative video, thank you! Have you done a video on French expressions that English people say but French people don’t? I think that could be super interesting! I remember when I lived in France, my students made invitations in English, and none of them knew what the “R” in “RSVP” stands for (it actually took them a while to realise that the acronym was for a French phrase, haha). In my experience, French speakers tend to invent words that sound English but actually aren’t, and English speakers tend to say phrases in French to sound all sophisticated but most French speakers wouldn’t say those phrases. I smile in either circumstance! 😀

To express, "having a difficult time (doing or attempting something)," in Québec, people often say, "J'ai de la misère à (faire qqch))." I learned that in real life here, not from FSF taught in a classroom.

Thanks. I do actually and was very enthusiastic about learning, even going to college at night to take classes, watching films, etc but last year I had breast cancer so I haven’t kept the momentum going. As a result I feel as if I’m starting again. I’ll get going again and have the courage to speak French more hopefully. When I’m there I feel embarrassed and guilty that I’m so bad at it but force myself to have a go. I just say désolé all the time. I subscribe to French news 24 but I’ll investigate other KZbin channels which is something that I haven’t done for some reason. There’s an American lady that does some stuff so I watch her occasionally but I could do more. That’s a bit ditsy of me actually as I’m thinking about it. I tried finding radio stations but there’s too many ads and it got annoying. Very grateful for your tips.

I'm confused and I don't understand have slightly different meanings in English.....I guess there's no distinction between them in French? I don't understand implies you understand nothing, whereas confused implies you've got multiple options and you're not sure which one to pick or which one is correct.

@shaungordon9737 3 жыл бұрын
@@charutha2610 Maybe, "I mixed up" or something similar. I don't know. The more I learn French, the more I realise they have a lot of slight subtleties missing from their language that English has, and many of the translations aren't exactly the same. But then again, there's things that French has the English lacks, so yeah know, it works both ways.
@charutha2610

Shaun Gordon Yeah, I agree. Also, I’m afraid, scared, fearful, all translate to j’ai peur. It’s also that English often has several words to mean the same thing.

Je suis confuse = I am mortified/I am a mess mortified = extremely embarrassed Having said that, I didn't see a way to express in French a general state of confusion. They gave examples for specific scenarios, but not a general way to say "I am confused" unless there is no general way to say this in French. Is there?
