The Baroque and Late Renaissance were really bad times for most people. Europe got colder and harvests failed. Protestants and Catholics killed each other. The Turks killed off whole coastlines of Europe. The Spanish that wrecked havoc in Europe began to decline and destructive wars by France and the Hapsburgs over lands killed millions of people. The English Civil War was awful. It's ASTOUDING to think that such beautiful music and culture was born from all this. A testament to human resiliance

Asserting the young insignificant son of a poor florentine miller, Giovanni Bapttista Lulli was an "italian composer" is completly absurd because he never learnt music, violin or composition anywhere else than in France and he never composed any music in Italy. During his youth he was just able to scratch some basic guitar chords. First the 14 years old Lully came in France as the italian reader of Mlle de Monpensier who allowed him to learn dancing, music, playing violin and keyboard with french masters (Nicolas Metru, François Roberday, Nicolas Gigault and his father in law Michel Lambert in working out the operas). He was grant a french subject nearly soon after his first opera. He considered himself the leader of the french school and never used any italian music or play as a model. Lully is only famous as the french composer of the king Louis XIV.

Well the Renaissance was quite different. While being an era of advancements in architecture and art, it was brutal and unmerciful. The Baroque and subsequent Classical period are practically the the same. Elegant, polished, and refined. For the average joe life was still rough irregardless of how the upper classes advanced.
