21 years ago, when this first came out; it was my first exposure to the Rack 3...I had heard some things by Rachmaninoff and I knew what an amazing pianist he was but...This movie gave me a thirst for more Rachmaninoff...The Rack 3 haunts me; It's power is sublime!

Me too. Favorite concerto from anyone. Absolutely gorgeous. I was shocked I had missed that piece, having been classically trained as a kid and a fan of everyone from Wolfgang to Stravinsky.

Yes. Geoffrey Rush is a brilliants and lovable actor ... but he is portraying an even more brilliant and lovable person, David Helfgott. Please don't forget. I met Helfgott shortly a couple of times after concerts in Denmark and when I told him my name is Leif he hugged me long and dearly and kept repeating "Leif Den Lykkelige" which was the nordic explorer that came to America 500 years before Columbus. Helfgott lived in Denmark for some time in my home town though I regrettable never met him at that time. When he played his birthday concert in Copenhagen after the regular set he kept running off stage asking his wife if he could play another piece. She rushed him in again and he ran back on stage and asked the audience if he could play another piece. The love from the audiience was never ending. He ended up playing double time, a night never to forget. I still cry when I reminisce.

If I remember correctly according to the director's comments, the music you here isn't Rush playing BUT he did learn the fingering to a "T" so he could appear as if he was playing without splicing someone else's hands in. That, in itself, is amazing!

I think Geoffrey is pretty good on piano and his fingers are definitely in the right place.I can play this piece but not up to speed. In the opening downward run, however, the first note of every 16 should be with the left hand not the right hand. Geoffrey does the lot with the right hand which I thought was interesting! Pretty impressive hand synch though!

Need to buy this film, I love the story for all its tragic humor, but it's rare that a movie about a pianist has somebody who can fake the hand motions well enough to fit what they're supposed to be playing. Rush is superb.
@000msh0009 жыл бұрын
+lygophile If you look closely, you can actually see that he is kinda faking it or maybe failing a bit sometimes. It's originally played by the real David Helfgott and added on to the footage. But i read in the trivia of the film at IMDB that Geoffrey Rush actually had to learn this piece to play this role in the movie, so he is kinda playing it the right way still

This scene is perhaps the one that popularized that piece so much and made it commercial in popular culture. Looking back, I can see why it was chosen: It's a good piece to depict the performer's ability in front of people who know little to nothing about music. Most importantly, it "sounds" difficult. A lot of pieces are incredibly difficult but they sound a lot easier than they really are. Generally speaking, pieces that feature fast passages with lots of chromaticism are perceived by the ear as incredibly difficult. Notice that the same happens in the movie The Legend of 1900 in the duel scene between 1900 and Jelly Roll Morton: When (SPOILERS) the protagonist finally plays the piece with which he will blow everyone away, it's a fast piece with a ridiculous (almost unnecessary) amount of chromaticism. I always thought that that final showdown piece sounded more like a technical exercise than a piece of music. But again, chromaticism is one of the features that blow people away the most.

Why do you claim it's not difficult? If you can pull off the sustained dexterity, it IS kind of a 'musical stunt' that naturally wows the audience. What defines "difficult" ? I'd say it's not just a blaze of notes itself... but if you can deliver the 'blaze' with absolute precision, endurance, and dynamics, it DOES put you in the top 1% of players. I propose that executing Flight of the Bumblebee properly and cleanly *IS* difficult on piano. You don't need a music degree to appreciate this for what it is. To suggest that this performance, with allegedly your better-educated-ear, is some kind of 'trick piece' you can see as underwhelming, while the general public are rubes merely being fooled by lots of notes... is snobbery. Yes - to Helfgott, this was Chopsticks... but to most piano players, especially amateurs - this delivery is something they will never achieve. That right hand work is beastly.
@rontomkins6727 Жыл бұрын
You misread my comment. I never said the piece is not difficult. But not all pieces "sound" or "appear" as difficult to general audiences even if they are. You can have a very difficult piece such as Satie's Gymnopedie Number 1, but it doesn't sound flashy and acrobatic. You can also have a piece that appears to be more difficult than it is. My point is simply that while the piece depicted here is very difficult, the directors probably wanted to use something that sounded really flashy and acrobatic, to really hammer down the point that what David is playing is extremely hard, so they could get the point across to general audiences who are not musically literate.
@joeblack8915 Жыл бұрын
@@rontomkins6727 not musically literate? - which is faux academic bullshit, relating to something which, at the end of the day, affects human emotions. No-one has to be a musical genius to enjoy music or understand it. There is nothing to understand about music, other than how it affects an individual's emotions -and no amount of sniffy nonsense will change that fact. You remind me of those pretentious idiots who try to explain the meaning of an abstract painting which is made up of a single stripe (no doubt painted by someone as equally pretentious) as though it contained the meaning of life and other pretentious twaddle. When it comes to music, there is nothing to take into consideration or work out or understand. Listening to it and enjoying it - or not, as the case may be - is all that's required. Music is what it is, nothing more.

Interesting and simple aspect that this movie showed us. That is, that we tend to judge people based on their appearance first and not their character and talent. We fail to get to know people before we pass judgement about them. It continues to this day and maybe even worse now then it ever was.
