French baroque music does elicit this poetic, mysterious and melancholic mood in the listener. It certainly happens to me practically every time. French baroque repertoire is my poison of choice. Intoxicating material and sensitive knowing performance. Bruno Cocset is a right man for this loveliness...

Same. There is a powerful and narcotic grandeur to French baroque music in combination with deeply moving emotional sensitivity. It is very unique in my opinion.

There is something unique about French music full stop. I listen to all kinds of music from France and no matter the genre there is always a uniqueness to it, even their Metal and Prog.

@@ianwilkinson4602 i absolutely agree, so much feeling, so much depth, despite the form..very few go deeper, in my.opinion I think of Debussy. Since you mentioned metal check out this little known 'metal band' called Les Discrets. I put metal in quotes cause theyre very progressive and combine different genres and styles so beautifully and its very French.

Hello Jason, thank you for the comment, I have Les Discrets album Ariettes Ouble'es as a download off their bandcamp I think, quite gothic sounding at times, but I haven't really taken it in yet. I like RIO and Zeuhl, but not everything recorded, Magma have always been a favourite of mine, i like many French albums, in English, French or Kobaian or even Latin on one, possibly the art rock album "Mana Perdu" by Elohim is one of the top ones, and La Nature Vit by ORION, En Regardant Passer Le Temps by Carpe Diem, I could go on all night :-) at the moment I am listening and watching an ex-Art Zoid member Thierry Zaboiteff, the piece of music that started me off was from 2002 it is Missa Furiosa by Zaboitzeff and crew kzbin.info/www/bejne/in3TeGSZoJWVhM0 I think it is brilliant, am I mistaken? let me know what you think if you have the time. There are some outstanding French "metal" band, like TheRuins of Beverast { powerful and haunting}, OXXO XOOX , IGORRR [ they are one of a kind] and a number of spin off sise projects which are equally as good. Cheers and keep the faith.

Seems like a long time since anyone commented on this post. Just wanted to say that this is a new composer to me and that I agree with all the comments below. Not sure yet whether this composer is hypnotic, melancholic, joyous, poetic, or just a part of an evolving tradition. My ignorance. But captivating it certainly is. And - happily addictive. Much love to all who appreciate this music and the brilliant performers who bring it back to life for us.

Sophisticated lyricism of that music is driven by the just as much complex dynamics of liquid rhythmic structure and ever changing tonalities. This is truly french attitude for artistic expression - hidden complexity under deceptively straightforward harmonious sound and structure. But it never what it seems with french taste. Maitre Barriere is a premiere example of that particularity in french school. Oevre of Maitre Barriere requires a light agile hand, precise timing, stupendous bowing technique and judicially calibrated expressiveness of tone and volume even in its most dramatic episodes. That is why probably it is so rarely heard despite its mindboggling beauty. Bruno Cocset is a wonderful interpreter of this material - he posses the technique, musicality and sensitivity this music requires. Merci Maitre Barriere!

Barrière was the only noteful French composer for the solo cello, coming after a very prosperous school of French composers for the voila di gamba (Sainte Colombe, Marais, Forqueray, Couperin). The instrumental influence is still pattly Italian, but the tone is typically French.: less fluent and melodic, clear influence of the structures on a tenor melody and rhythms like in Rameau or Leclair . All these compositions aiming at using the cello as a tenor instrument with its full independence will lead step by step to the key masterworks of Beethoven's op. 5 n=1 2 for cello and piano; Of course, Barriére is fat from being Beethoven But his writing and architectural care puts him rather in the Beethoven''s line than in those of the Italian baroque composers (including Vivaldi's innovations). . When studying the works of any genius, Rosen evidenced the fact that two issues are important:(1) what makes a musical composition a masterwork of course, but also (2) taking into due consideration themusical history and its ummediate surrounding which, if we may say, it so, gives a concrete background to the question how Genius may grow as the nicest of flowers from a brown and rough soil. From such perspectives, both Barrière and Leclair are equally important, and Berrière could have been "the Lecair of the cello"" if he did not unfortunately die at 40. French musicologists helped us to better appreciate Rameau, then Leclair and many others. Now, it should be fair if it was Barrière's turn 💗💗💗💗💗
