Having just listened to five of these, I think this is my favorite. He makes Dvorak the star. He lets the music work. I have to listen to Fornier now.

Beautiful Post, i know most posters have no control on this, but the sudden blasting of an alt music with ad or the Sandyhook plea in the slow movement is criminal 😞

I was petty young when i say mr Fournier. I was shocked at his limp - i was told it was a war wound. same when i saw Perlman - i knew nothing about his polio. needless to say they both gave wonderful performances.

Pity he didn't do the double stop ossia at 11:20 but rarely do you ever see cellists doing the start of the final passage at 14:09 in octaves which is so nice to hear, even if the volume is a bit low.

Bach Cello suite No.1 1962 Well worked out dynamic movement and flow and again fine sense of direction and wider phrase, plus some impressive inwardness and intelligence across the music, keeping the attention, a strong personality; however this too evenly conceived in contrast to the early Ma recording pointing up the sequences more effectively. Misses a few paragraph markers and instead is a degree pushy in some of the faster movs, overly languorous in the sarabande, and lacks the weight yet articulation of the best men. Uses a similar cello to Casals with a leaner sound as allowing for added rhythmic attention and liveliness; likely she knew the recording though not the Rostropovich Saga LP of 59 and 61 with its steadier power. Bach Cello suite No.2 1962 Again here finds some steady lyricism where the expressive detailing is kept in check, contrasting with her later wilfulness; has the overall searching and some of the inward aesthetic nature and Germanic murk with the sarabande well sustained, even if she’s only just making sense of it all and the results are more successfully managed and self-conscious than authoritative; again the third mov courante is skittish. She’s only 17 and making a commercial recording is disrespectful to the music, something no one with a developed awareness would do, but suites 1-2 here have a maturity beyond her years; interesting enough work, and great recorded sound.
