I was really expecting more Boohoo sounding songs on this one wasn’t sure about it at first. Thought it was his least well structured album but by the end of the listening experience I loved it. Keep going back to Darlin’, Black sugar, Die for me and P4IN. Houston really grew on me since the single release and the folky songs are much better here than on Chaos Now.
@colorfulpeanut6157Ай бұрын
I agree. It’s hard being a pixel bath/chaos now fan then getting this. But it definitely is growing on me. It’s very experimental and it’s all over the place but I enjoyed the listen

Definitely agree. I was kinda expecting more at first but it’s still a great album and I’ve been annoying it a lot. I would like him to work on the sequencing for the next album and really push for something great, but overall this is probably his most polished album yet. Can’t wait to see him live next week.
@BlueissuperiorАй бұрын
@@justinwarthen his sequencing on everything else has been amazing I think it’s just because this one was so wild it feels confusing. But there’s at least a clear mid point for the album it just needed a Pyrotechnics to end it off

@@Blueissuperior I thought it was kinda lacking on chaos now as well, but I’m really just nitpicking. I do like the album a lot and like the direction he’s going in. I disagree with fantano on black sugar a lot, that’s prob my favorite song off the album or Houston. I do think the genre changes would be better places over like the length of the album instead of from song to song. I love Jean a lot tho and think he’ll get his masterpiece one day.

I’ve actually been waiting for this review so I’m happy it’s finally here! Genuinely such an amazing album. I really want Jean to focus his energy into one genre to make a more cohesive project. Perhaps a full Indie Folk album or a full on R&B album. I like the genre mashups but I think it’s harder to make a consistent work within that framing. Overall super happy with the album with “Darlin’”, “The Boy and the Swan”, and “Kollapse” as my favorite records off of it. I think a fleshed out Jean Dawson Folk album could easily be a 10/10.

As a long time Jean fan I’d like to say what I love most about Jean’s artistry is that he does not box himself in or simply repeat what has worked in the past with each project I’ve come to expect the unexpected like genre bending. I appreciate the effort put into the body of work. I never worry about not being able to connect with his direction because I understand the intention behind each song having its own purpose to stand out while still maintaining a cohesive album.

jean dawson easily delivers one of the best albums of the year. he expands upon everything he has released thus far. this reads as a showcase to flex his progression of all of the stuff he has experimented with before. as a long time fan of jean this project requires multiple listens and has easily cemented itself as one of the best albums this year (my personal favorite... i hate rating music in this way but i strongly feel that this is a 9.2/10) he has been working on his vocals, production, and direction. I saw Jean live the day he released, and I wanted the more aggressive, but as I continued to listen and saw it live it clicked for me. I feel like the crazy jumps in theme go perfect in a live setting where his fans still have a kind of pent up energy and want to go hard, while still providing a space to take a breath as he transitions into more ballad type songs from the album. Overall I feel the only things that could've been better for me is get Lil Yachty out, if there is a chance to get Jpeg on a remix of Play dead do it. and possibly just arrange the album slightly different. Live he played slow heavy ecstasy into pain and it flowed so well I wondered why it wasn't like that on GOG. Overall though I loved the album and find myself coming back to different songs every time I listen to it. Can't wait to see how he progresses from here

Don‘t really get the last argument for it being a light 7… you seem to have enjoyed most parts of the album and say even if the song is not hitting for you you enjoy the work and experimentation that went into it, plus you say it’s well written and produced and has some of the best vocal moments of jeans career on there. To me this sounds like an 8 from your own perspective. You then go on to say you feel like the fanbase could be overwhelmed by the variety of the musical palette and that‘s why you feel like it‘s falling short a little - therefore the light 7? Unless you summarized your own experience with it it in the score, I don‘t get why you in your review should care about the expectations of the fanbase. Still a good review but that didn‘t make sense to me. I‘m feeling a light 7 on the review😈
