Thank you so much for your video..especially the part where you put dots of pigment at the top of a paper , make a long water mark …and paint a sample of what the color looks like from its deepest color out to a very pale shade. It’s the best tutorial I have seen, as I’ve returned to watercolor painting after many years. I never thought of doing it, but it really allows you to see and experience the pigments as they,flow onto the paper through the water. The final result is often very surprising!

These are beautiful colors, and one thing about the Aussie Red Gold is that on a good paper like Arches, it tints out to yellow. Unfortunately, the Opera Pink is very fugitive and for that reason, I wouldn’t use it. I think there are better alternatives in the Quinacridone ranges. For me, this collection lacks a few earth tones, but I am guessing that this woman does mostly botanicals. I do mostly figures so not strange that I use a different range of colors.

@@Returntolove123 i absolutely love crystals & minerals so when i saw that ds had the primatek series i vowed to own them all, didn't work out that way. too many do not hold to the actual color of the stone or as in sleeping beauty (the palest & most expensive of all turquoise) it just went dead. turquoise is an odd stone in that the rough stone is very pale & drab until wet or polished so a wc from it was hopeless from the start. i bought the primatek set to start & since then i have only added the green apatite. sad but ds has other much better colors overall than the primatek series. i also think sleeping beauty as a stone is overrated too, i love the deeper multi-colored turquoises so much better.
@mn83043 жыл бұрын
A legit concern, but you'd have to pry y SB Turquoise from my cold dead hands. Not everyone who receives a painting as a gift (or even buys one) expects the painting to look exactly the same for 100 years or even 5. Some artists gift and sell their work with the disclaimer that it likely WILL change or fade over time, and if that is not desired then UV-blocking glass over the painting can slow that process down. Most everything else in life develops the patina of time, given enough time, including humans themselves and their possessions! This idea that art "should" be immune from that, that it's "dodgy" unless the artist creates only art that is "freeze-dried" in time, is I hope an idea that (pun intended) is in the process of fading.

Rori Rants different artists have different needs and different priorities and that’s why there’s all these different paint in the world. She might scan and print her art so the lightfastness of the original piece doesn’t matter, she could personally prioritize the brightness of the piece over the lightfastness, maybe she just likes highlighter pink, but contrary to what people say there’s no like hard set rules on what an artist can and will use. Different artist have different purpose, hell what is even standard and “professional” about the rest of the set? Not to mention that when opera rose fades its not like it turns into Brown or something, it just kinda fades back into a more normal standard pr122 color so especially for personal use there really is no harm in using it over a more typical Quinnacridone color
@SuzetteG3164 жыл бұрын
Many professional artists use Opera Pink (which I'm guessing is what you are being affronted over). If it's not for you, it's not for you. Well every artist has their preferences, I buy lightfast and enjoy many from DS but not ones that will fade. Too many in this group are not of the highest lightfast rating, no offense but other pigments will work even better and save money within the DS brand😊
@Returntolove1235 жыл бұрын
Absolutely shocking that this lady is advocating the use of Opera Pink which is highly fugitive, a fact that DS admits.Use that stuff and it will be faded off your 'masterpiece' in no time regardless of where you keep it.No artist of any repute uses this stuff.
@deathcraze225 жыл бұрын
People have tested Opera Pink swatches in the sun themselves rather than relying on the provided lightfast grading. It does depend on brand, but actually certain Opera Pinks (like W&N) have been found to be more lightfast than the supposedly ‘more lightfast’ Aureolin or even Hansa Yellow Light. I was against using Opera Pink until I saw those multiple tests by several people with the same result, now I’ve added it to my palette.
@Returntolove1235 жыл бұрын
@@deathcraze22 Well firstly I will say that I have no wish to get into the merits or otherwise of this paint.If you want to use it go ahead, everyone to their own and the great thing is that if you yourself have tested it and happy, then that is all that counts.If you make a painting and the colour sinks out of it, you get to deal with it just as if you sell a painting with it.Robert Wade described it as a fluorescent pigment and to be avoided at all costs.As he said, if you sell a dog of a painting it will come back to bite you.Using it to me is like learning to make a chair in woodwork class and putting legs of balsa wood on it.I mean why bother? What I will say though is that firstly I am referring to the Opera Rose being plugged by Daniel Smith and recommended by Ms Haines.Daniel Smith themselves warn that it is fugitive so why would any reputable artist attach their name to something like that and Ms Haines is doing just that??? There is a lot more that can be said here, none of it good, so let me move on.Secondly, with reference to the W&N brand, which they claim is PR122, the Handprint site doesn't even rate the lightfastness of their version it is so bad and when you visit the website of both W&N and indeed Jacksons Art Supplies there is no information regarding the lightfastness on it.I may be wrong but even Holbein class it and a few others as only being fit for poster paint.PR122 can be paints such as Quinacridone Magenta but these are highly lightfastness, Opera never was.Thirdly, the original Aureolin as in the pigment PY40 was never considered lightfast by anyone.M.Graham makes a paint he calls Azo Yellow and in brackets Aureolin but this is PY151, totally different pigment and I suspect being called Aureolin along with Azo Yellow as an offering to those looking for Aureolin but there are loads of alternatives.No serious watercolorist ever used Aureolin made with PY40.Hansa Yellow Light as in PY3 is just too dodgy to be sure of.There are some manufacturers who produce a light fast ish version including Daniel Smith but again it's buyer beware.So again, no disrespect or wish to get into an argument but comparing the lightfastness of any pigment to something like Aureolin is not a good testament.There are a number of artists out there who use questionable pigments in their tuition and there are reasons for that which we won't bother ourselves with here.I wish you well.
@Bees123Knees5 жыл бұрын
@@Returntolove123 I'm only starting to learn about pigments and even I was surprised that Haines was shilling Opera Pink. Maybe Daniel Smith is stuck with massive amounts of the pigment in his inventory and he gave Haines her own signature line of paints provided she include Opera Pink? I bet he moved a helluva lot of Opera just with this promotional piece. I didn't think she really gushed about the colour the way she did about the others. Yep, I think it was a contractual obligation. HA! I have no idea what I'm talking about but Haines including it just seems kinda hinky to me.
