Thanks for uploading. I was in UCG but had left two years before this event. It's amazing to look back at those times in this and your other videos. All the older people, and indeed some young people feeling that they must act as moral guardians to prevent our upcoming descent into depravity as they saw it. You couldn't argue with them that what consenting adults did privately was no one else's concern. They never saw what was actually coming, the actual depravity in the abuse of power by the Church over the vulnerable they were supposed to be taking care of, both temporally and spiritually. Some of the self-appointed moral guardians never got over that sharp shock from reality.

Yeah, I felt sorry for allot of them actually, particularly those that were older. The first slap in the face they got was the Eamonn Casey scandal. That shook allot of older folks around Galway (And beyond).

"I've never seen the movie but I don't like it and therefore, you can't see it." Those people taking offence to a movie chose to take offence. Offence is taken, not given. Someone being offended is no excuse to censor anyone. What gives those protestors the right to decide what other people can and can not view?
@germpore4 жыл бұрын
What a fascinating piece of social history! Thank you for posting this. It's definitely not the Galway or the Ireland of today, that's for sure. (Though the area around the entrance to NUIG looks pretty much the same!) Such a different time - you'd never get a legion of protesters to come out to oppose a Godard film, but then you wouldn't get more than a handful to come out and view it either. Also, I think the irony would be that if there was a censorship battle now, the target would probably be someone opposed to abortion or gay rights, and the folks calling for censorship would probably be much younger than the ones opposing it. (Albeit, I've found that Ireland is still not as bad about 'cancel culture' as the USA or the UK.)
