Jean Luc Ponty enters many dimensions. I want to share a story in which me and a friend were having a couple of beers near the top of Mt. Wilson, in which there was a canyon beneath us. The sun was setting and there were incredible red and purple colorizations in and around the horizon. We had a ghetto blaster, a good quality one, and we were playing the song Eulogy to Oscar Romero fairly loud, but not too loud. The sounds echoed throughout the canyon below us in the most mesmerizing of ways, and we thought we were the only two people there, experiencing this. Well, after the song was finished, we heard clapping from below us. Apparently there was a fire road we could not see from our sitting point and there were people hiking on it, who were equally mesmerized at watching such an amazing sunset to the sounds of Eulogy to Oscar Romero. Good to know that we were not the only ones enjoying that moment. I have been to quite a few concerts in my life, but I can say that the most enjoyable concert, sound quality and performances , by far, was seeing Imaginary Voyage at an outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles area. Throughout all of his transitionary albums, there is not one that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you very much for sharing this interview. What a treat.

JLP’s “Upon the Wings of Music” really opened my ears to a wider world of violin music after struggling along in the violin section of school orchestra. Over the decades I picked up nearly every one of his recordings. Excellent interview - thanks so much.

JLP changed my life - When I was in high school, I was a Rush fanatic, jazz wasn't even on my radar - I had a summer job as a dishwasher at a steak house - There was an older musician that worked there who wanted to borrow my "Permanent Waves" album to dub to tape - No way I said but he eventually talked me into it - When I brought it, he brought something for me to listen to in the meantime - It was Jean Luc Pontys "Civilized Evil" and my world was rocked - Being a young drummer I was swept away by the rhythms and melodies - I had definitely never heard anything like it I was hooked - I never got that album back the guy disappeared with it but I didn't care because I instantly became a fusion junkie and have been ever since - The next album I got was "Individual Choice" and that's how I discovered Allan Holdsworth but don't get me started on him God rest his soul

Mr. Ponty you've brought a whole new world to me musically back in the late 70s when I was first introduced to your music. My hat's off to you sir. Being a young drummer then I enjoyed Casey and later Rayford were big influences. Just to name a couple of drummers JLP used.

I really appreciate this conversation, thankyou. Civilized Evil on a rough cassette copy was my introduction to Monsieur Ponty and with a professional classical violinist father, the combination of the fiddle with Happy Robots grabbed my curiosity and I remained hooked ever since. I still dig that bowing technique . . . .

Thank you Gregg for this wonderful piece with the great Jean-Luc Ponty. I can't help wondering why Allan Holdsworth wasn't brought up though.

Just ran out of time. JLP did talk to my composition students about AH after one of the Atlantic concerts, so he does have some interesting things to offer there. Next time.

Its funny how everyone loved 'Enigmatic Ocean' yet "Cosmic Messenger" and "A taste for passion" Gets slept on entirely. Sure, Enigmatic ocean sold the most, but the musician in me leans more towards those albums. There is a resurgence in sales for 'enigmatic ocean' but I think that is due to Allan Holdsworth's passing.

Mystical Adventures is the most slept on by far in my opinion
