Bro, you nailed it! "Equinoxe" and "The Concerts in China" are my the most favorite ones from JMJ! But "The Concerts in China" is something like from another planet, especailly this track and "The Overture". I've probably listened to and improvised playing those 2 :) over and over maybe hundreds of times, while riding in my Camry to and from work. This is just the masterpiece, and it's so sad (but this is just me) that Jarre's 1997 "Oxygene" was the last which you could tell: yes, this is JMJ. After that, he just followed the trend of the 2000s and nothing that really catches myself, except "Light My Sky" (English version from "Aero - Tribute To The Wind" in Denmark, 2002). Thank you very much again, Alessandro! P.S. Try "The Overture", I'll bet you get 11 out of 10 :)

Hi dude, first of all thank you for spending your time to comment and share you thoughts (this kind of comments are rewarding of the time spent to realize these covers!). I'm with you in saying that JMJ best productions stop at mid 90s. The first albums are doubtless masterpieces, I would say classics. They are timeless: surprising at that time and still today. Equinoxe was the album that bound me to electronic music and synthesizers. And.. yes: L'Ouverture could be one of the best live opening track that one could imagine, with that stereophonic brass-like synth voice that slowly brings the listener in a complete new dimensions (think of that chinese audience facing for the first time with the live west pop music). L'Ouverture is on my to-do list: I'm trying to find the right sound for the arpeggiated synth, it's not easy (at least for me). According to my understanding, it's needed a synth with two envelopes, one for the VCF, the other for the VCA; it should have a legato mode and a very good filter. I read that that sound originally came fro the OB-Xa, perhaps sampled in the Fairlight for the chinese live, 'cause the OB-Xa is not on the gear list of those shows. But I need to investigate more: I will publish a cover only if that sound will be close enough. Thank you again!

very accurate cover, I prefer this to the original actually because the tune is more emphasised than the effects, and the chinese voices which drive me nuts aren't here, Great job

Thank you for your comment Triadii! Well, I confess that I tried to recreate also the chinese voices, but the results were so poor that I decided to discard them :^)

This is absolutely amazing. Excellent job. How did you pull off the drum sounds? They’re so cool. 👌👍🤘
@AlessandroGiancane3 жыл бұрын
Hi Will, thank you very much for the comment! Creating that drum sound at the opening was very easy: I sampled (with my trusty Roland S-550 :-) the snare sound from the original song (it's the very last sound you can hear at the end of the song). Then I added a long and full-bodied reverb, and I simple REVERSE played the sample; actually the sample is played in this order: from the END to the START and then back to the END. Of course you can obtain the same result using a PC DAW (for example Audacity) 🙏

I was just thinking to myself, where is the "seagull" sample in this track. I think the sound you're referring to is actually a camera shutter with motorised film advance. A professional one like a Nikon from back in the day when if you wanted the film wound on for the next pic automatically, you had to buy a separate motor drive unit that bolted onto the bottom of the camera.
@AlessandroGiancane2 жыл бұрын
Hi olatron, there's no seagull sample in this track: what I call "seagull effect" is the sound I play (for instance starting at 0:08) with the JX-10 (the keyboard in the middle). "Seagull" is an invented name I have chosen for this sound :^)
@olatron2 жыл бұрын
@@AlessandroGiancane I understand, like the 2-3 note little blips you play, not the shutter sound sample. I love this version so much, thanks for taking the time to play it for us.

Maybe the snare lacks a bit of reverb or echo.
@AlessandroGiancane8 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right! Although I put a lot of effort on the mixing phase, the results are always susceptible of corrections and improvements... And there is always the “variable” KZbin: once the video is uploaded, the audio gets automatically altered/compressed, so a lot of details of the original audio are lost. The more I publish on YT, the more I get convinced that properly mixing is probably the hardest part! By the way, thank you for the comment 🙏

Excellent work and very accurate.Congrats..! Check out my version of this piece...i was based on the second time that Jarre was in China and he had played this along with a symphonic orchestra.

Hi George, I had already seen your version, when I didn't yet own any synthesizer.. Your video and that of others on YT encouraged me to go back to playing after over 20 years! So thanks to you too if I resumed this passion :-)
