I often try to imagine what it would have been like to hear the masters themselves play their timeless creations after toiling meticulously to find every note. If the sound engineer had just taken the time to account for noise created from his fingers tapping the cello, this would have been a performance that would rival one of the originals.

In about 1700, the 'cello was a very new instrument, and nobody quite knew what to do with it --- they didn't know how to tune (5th suite) or how many strings it should have (6th suite). But JSB came along and said, "let me show you how it's done." People will be playing the Suites in a thousand years.

Interestingly, I have already memorized and can play without score the whole first suite and the first two movements of the second. And I have eight months of practice only. It actually comes faster than you’d think. Now playing with that sound snd intonation is a whole different story ! But my point is musical memory can be trained and used rather easily imo

One of the many reasons I love the cello more than any other string instrument... it is able to sound dark, full, bright, high pitched, low pitched-- all depending on how you want to play it. It's so versatile. This Bach is so beautifully played, in such a gorgeous environment. I would love to go to one of these some day...

I really love his performance. So focus, so intriguing. However, Mr. Marc's agent, please have another editing company. The editing is so disturbing. I'm OK with you taking specific shots on the performer, but the jumping, 3-frame picture...... I'd rather you focus on one frame, his hand position, his face, the strings..... Stay there. Don't jump. This is Bach, not some modern show-off sound-light attraction performance. Most of the time, I just use some other windows to prevent from seeing the picture, although I really enjoy Mr. Marc expression. I have to sacrifice....

@Julia Mary Marple I read your comment carefully and agreed with everything you said, except your being a "waste of space". I have always had to fight this trap of comparing oneself to such obvious examples of genius. My mentor, Abe Kestenberg (classical saxophone), used to drum this direction into my head: "Just do YOUR thing". (Please pardon the capitalization.) After years of hearing this, I finally began to accept, eventually through mentoring my own students, that each of us does have something important to offer to the world, no matter our level of musicianship. Music might be the medium but it is the authenticity of our unique and complete expression that makes any comparison unnecessary. I hope that my Professor's words may help you to see that there is no need to compare. What you have to offer is valid, no matter what anyone else is doing. Peace.

When (and if) AI ends up arriving at the generation of such a tour de force (called the "suite") in terms of composition, musicality, sensibility, dexterity and artistry, we will know for a fact that we are done as a species. I sincerely hope it will never happen. This is so sublimely human. Thank you to JSB and to maestro Coppey!

I was immediately struck by the first few chords, that this was truly good playing. I recall falling in love with these suites with Janos Stárker in the 1960s. Coppey´s playing compares very well indeed!
