In 2018, Yo Yo Ma started a musical tour around the world. He planned to tour in 36 cities in six continents around the world to play Bach's Six Cello Suites. The ancient Greek Theater, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, was his first stop. Unfortunately, the Pandemic stopped Yo Yo Ma's world music tour. The performance in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus Greek was one of the most beautiful versions of Yo Yo Ma's performance of Bach's Six Suites.

Maisky is much more "expressive" (as a lot of people have said), and I find I personally really prefer his romantic playing compared to other cellists (and I also commented all of the movement timestamps ;). On the contrary, for all the people who think this type of playing is a "disgrace" to Bach and "not what he intended" you could always look up the "historically accurate" Baroque interpretations of masters like Anner Bylsma and Hidemi Suzuki, just to name a few (instead of leaving hateful or critical comments about how you don't like so-and-so's playing). I've read many other comments across KZbin, and a lot of people have agreed that a fine gentleman by the name of Enrico Dindo provides one of the "best" interpretations of the Suites, as he provides a perfect "middle-ground", incorporating many Baroque elements into his playing but still having an essence of a "modern" cellist (and to be honest I don't exactly know what I'm talking about). I usually don't talk this much, but I feel J.S. Bach's Cello Suites are something of virtually infinite possibilities and interpretations, and people will never, ever agree on a "correct" way of performing them, so I'd recommend just sitting back and enjoying the music. Now that you've gotten to the end of this lengthy spiel, good day or night to you, whoever you are, and I wish you prosperity in the future.

cello is beautiful but it is the viola the one that matches the most the human frequencies (from a violist). That being said, Yo Yo Ma is an absolute master of his instrument and few if any can play like him at his best. Though in my humble opinion, his techniques shines much more in more virtuosistic romantic works (Listen to him playing Vocalise)

Absolutely astonishing musicianship and Yo Yo Ma captures the spirit of Bach. He plays it exactly the way Bach intended it to be played. It's a spiritual experience to listen to this incredible composition by Bach. These six cello suites capture every aspect of life itself. The happy, the sad, the determination, and love. This is a masterpiece performance. May Mother Goddess continue to bless Yo Yo Ma.

Glib, abrasive, parochial, bourgeois, dismissive, abusive - all appropriate adjectives to describe this 'performance'. "Absolutely astonishing musicianship and Yo Yo Ma captures the spirit of Bach. " An astonishing public admission on your part that even at the age of 50-55, you haven't begun to discover Bach. "He plays it exactly the way Bach intended it to be played" 2nd public admission. "It's a spiritual experience to listen to this incredible composition by Bach. " An astonishing public admission on your part that even at the age of 50-55, you still struggle and paw at the word 'spiritual' to see if you can experience spirituality for the first time in your life. "The happy, the sad, the determination, and love. " The glib, the abrasive, the bourgeois, the dismissive, the abusive, the parochial. "This is a masterpiece performance" For a giant gaggle of extremely white, booze-addled Karens inhaling overpriced white wine by the boxload. "May Mother Goddess continue to bless Yo Yo Ma." Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand THERE'S the confirmation stamp - Karen is IN the house, sufficiently soused and clawing at the universe to discover Bach, the cello and spirituality.

How we do love Yo-Yo Ma, born and gifted to receive the mantle from Pablo Casals to play for us, for all of us in the world who listen, the Christian, deeply aesthetic cello suites! JSB would write at the top of his manuscripts, 'Help me, Lord,' and at the end, 'Thank you, God.' Richard of St. Victor tells us, 'The human spirit is not love, but love can flow through it. Therefore, we cannot exult in ourselves, but only in the love that flows through us.'

As a pupil of the great violist and Bach interpreter, Lillian Fuchs, who devoted many years of her life to understanding, interpreting, performing, recording and teaching these masterful suites on the viola. I learned to play and love this music as a young man. Now at the age of 73, this music moves me as much or more than ever, and I can only take my hat off to Xo Yo Ma for sharing the fruits of his amazing talent and performing experience through this great music and performance. Tis is , IMHO absolutely MONUMENTAL!Thank you YO YO MA, and THANK YOU J.S. Bach!

He still doesn't trust Bach; too much weird hurriedness! There's too much YYM and not enough Bach in there. I'm not saying it should be as workman-like as Rostropovich's, and I realize there's lots of superb competition with things like Coppey's excellent work and Wen Sinn Yang's beautiful recordings. Not to mention Netherlands Bach Society, Casals older recordings, or even Edgar Meyer. If you listen to Andras Schiff talk about Bach, then listen to him play the French Suites (Leipzig recordings), that's Bach! Or Helmut Walcha ... These performers understand that Bach requires raw intimacy, not virtuosic flare. Introspection, not demonstrativeness. These are best appreciated, and performed, not as show pieces, but as meditations. Like you're watching the musician thinking and revealing the self. "Bach is Life" you might say.

@@ruohaochen Inevitability, the performer's personality will be revealed, in any performance. Don't get me wrong, he is a wonderful cellist! But I don't like his Bach. His Dvorak, his collaborations with Bella Fleck and Edgar Meyer, etc., those are where he shines. But strangely, he learned to play cello largely thru the Cello Suites. Edgar Meyer said he built his technique playing them on double bass - why are his recordings of the Suites so different, then? To my view, quite superior. The performer must trust Bach. And then think their way thru the piece. Perhaps I am too devoted to this idea for Bach? "Bach as Life" perhaps I should've said. Maybe it's too idealized.

Even if every musician have their own interpretation of Bach's music (or any other music), i also think that he play too fast, like at 38:13. For me Bach music express his best potential when played slowly, because it's a profound music, and the notes have to be played with more dephts. When played too fast, you don't feel this depht. I myself prefer enrico dindo interpretation, because he play Bach in the way that touch me better.
