The best way to watch Miyazaki is to put aside all analytical tendencies. Learn to enjoy them in the moment as pure experience then afterwards, in hindsight, you can examine and deconstruct what you have seen. If you engage your intellect while watching you will miss a lot of the emotional nuance. Miyazaki himself doesn't work on conscious thematic level. He works principally off of his internal emotional narrative, not even knowing where he is taking a story, and allows his themes to arise organically in the writing process. You should view it the same way. My take on this movie is about Sasuki managing her transition from being a child, like Mei, to being an adult, like her father. She is constantly going back and forth between the magical/spiritual childhood world and dealing with harsh realities. In the end she finds that both the spiritual and real are not exclusive realities but are complimentary views of the same world. You don't have to give up your belief in magic to be an adult.

it's a really beautiful movie but just to warn you, if this one made you emotional, i'd advise you to NOT EVER watch grave of the fireflies..... probably equally as good as this one but so much more realistic and tragically heartbreaking, it's a hard watch 😕

When I was watching this movie it let me wondering if it was real or just their imagination, like when kids have imaginary friends and stuff like that, and adults are just like yeah sure, I thought it was like that but throught the movie the dad kept saying things like they were real, and he saw totoro too and smiled, and at the end of the movie it's pretty clear it was actually real because her mom did get the gift and she even said she saw them in the tree, it's genius how studio gibli plays with reality and fantasy and how they connect so seemlesly

19:53 In Japan, the fox is an important spirit animal, as you called it, tying into the myth of the Kyubi no Kitsune (nine tailed fox). There's two types of fox spirit in the original folklore: the Zenko and Yako. Yako are the mischievous (and sometimes even malicious) tricksters, while the Zenko are benevolent messengers, guardians and even lovers. As statues near a shrine gate, it's safe to assume those were the Zenko meant to guard the place.

This is a shrine dedicated to the god of harvest/food, and the statue of foxes are the messenger of the god. It is not a bad omen, but a "God is watching over the children" scene. The god enshrined is 宇迦之御魂神(Uka-no-mitam) or 保食神(Ukemochi-no-kami) or 豊受大神(Toyouke-no-kami).The gods of food are deities on the side of the sun god, the supreme God of Shinto, and beloved by the Japanese. The fox is a messenger serving the god of harvest/food. The 九尾の狐(nine-tailed fox) that is being discussed are characters that have nothing to do with Japanese religion. The nine-tailed fox is NOT Japanese, but a Chinese folk tale well known in many Asian countries. To the Japanese, it is just a monster, so neither statues nor beliefs exist.

The foxes (or Kitsune) could transform themselves as humans and walk among them, similiar to the Tanooki (who could transform to other things, similar to Tanuki Mario in Super Mario Bros. 3 and in Super Mario Oddysey, could turn into a statue). Another Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko is centered around the tanookis and even have a kitsune fox character in it.

In Japan, there is a religion called Shintō deity, but unlike other countries, there is no Bible, and the main story of how Japan came to be is found in Shintō deity. The Japanese value their shrines. They are grateful for the mountains, the rivers, the sky and all of nature. The Japanese believe in gratitude to the mountains, rivers, sky and all of nature.

The mother has tuberculosis, that's why she's on the hospital. I read on Internet, Miyazaki used that because his own mother had too. Totoro or the cat bus are spirits but they can be see only by kids (and animals) so I think the father can't see them but believe in their existence. Fun fact : Totoro makes a cameo in the movie " Pompoko " from Studio Ghibli

Miyazaki based the movie of his own childhood experiences as her mom had tuberculosis and they had to move out to the country as there was a hospital that could treat that kind of sickness. He made the main characters into two girls because if it was two boys, then it would be too hard for him. Originally, it was just going to be one girl (as seen on the poster and DVD/Blu-ray cover) but he and his storymen couldn't figure out how to play out act three with just one so she was split into Satsuki and Mei (Mei got her pigtails and was placed behind Satsuki's back to explain the continuity error with the poster or as a reference to it).

Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe are voiced by real life sisters Dakota and Ellie Fanning (they recorded all their scenes together, which is rare in voice acting). Dakota took over voicing Lilo in Lilo & Stitch 2 and Leroy & Stitch, as Daveigh Chase got too old for the part. Ellie would years later play Aurora in Malificent. Granny is voiced by late Pat Carol who voiced Ursula in The Little Mermaid. Mrs. Kusakabe is voiced by Lea Salonga, the singing voice of Jasimine in Aladdin and the title character of Mulan. Totoro and the Catbus are voiced by Frank Welker, who have voiced Scooby Doo and Freddie Jones (the latter he have ever since Scooby-Doo Where Are You in 1970, the former he took over from Don Messick in 2002), voiced Baby Kermit and Skeeter in later seasons of Muppet Babies, Megatron in Transformers, doing animal sounds in both live action and animation including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Aladdin (where he also voiced The Cave of Wonders in addition to Abu and Rajah), The Lion King (doing the lion roars of all lion characters), Space Jam (as Charles the Bulldog), Pocahontas (as Flit), Mulan and Mulan 2 (as Cree-Kee), to mention a few.

If you pay attention in the end credits you never see Totoro in the same scene as the girls, that's because they don't need him anymore as they have their mother back, so he fades into the background.
