I always think of Totoro as a symbolism of the child's spirit. Satsuki is a young child, who due to her mother's illness, has to take on the role of the mom. This is especially the case when taking care of her younger sister Mei. She is in a dilemma of having to grow older in a world where she is a child and Totoro is symbolic of her world of a child. Adults cannot see the spirits but both Satsuki and Mei can. And though life is burdening her to grow up, Totoro gives her the support to remain as a child in spirit. Mei of course can see Totoro fully due to her being completely a child and Satsuki having to bridge the two worlds ends up in personal conflict. Yes, there is the nature spirit side to the movie as well but I felt this is one of the best movies representing the trials of a child growing up. It is one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies.

Wow I really love your analysis. The movie truly does a great job depicting the emotionality of Satsuki's journey away from childhood towards adulthood. I'm definitely leaning more towards your perspective than the more literal nature spirit interpretation.

I've had numerous opportunities to watch this movie from the past until now, and it's interesting how my perspective while watching it has changed between when I was little and now as a parent.

Actually, Lofi girl is from a different Ghibli film, Whisper of the Heart, which just so happens to be my personal favorite Ghibli film. I highly recommend it~

One detail that most reviewers are unaware of is that the story is set in the 1950s. This explains the absence of TV, telephones, etc.

Howl's Moving Castle is so much fun, but My Neighbor Totoro is the studio "mascot" for a reason. It's not a perfect 1 to 1, but my sister is about five years younger than me, and that tension of Satsuki wanting to be a good older sister to Mei but still getting frustrated easily with her reminds me of the two of us. Thankfully, neither parent ever had a serious illness while we were growing up.

Fun fact Mei is calling Totoro a troll, going off what TV Tropes mentions Mei was trying to say "Torōru" but mispronounced it as "Totoro". This movie also aired after Grave of the Fireflies in movie theaters in Japan so after the airing of a really depressing movie about two kids in WWII* you get this movie that is mood whiplash to recover from it when the movie is over. The dad is voiced by the creator of the Mother(Earthbound) series & is a well-known essayist & copywriter. Also this movie has two dubs, the Disney one & one known as "Fox Dub" or "Streamline dub" that is no longer being sold cause I think the company is gone & the license to dub it ran out so Disney got it's chance to sell it's dub. Both dubs are nice but I grew up with the Fox dub, it's kinda funny one of you guys mention the sisters voicing Mei & Satsuki in the Disney dub cause oddly enough in the fox dub(after looking up names) has Gregory Snegoff(as the dad), his wife Lisa Michelson(Satsuki) & his mom Alexandra Kenworthy(the mom), Satsuki's voice actress passed away before the movie came out but she did all her lines two years before she died so there were no issues with the lines.(It's still sad cause she passed in a car crash) *Sad fact the brother is an author avatar aka a self-insert of the author who made the book Grave of the Fireflies is based on. It's a book about him & his sister & he has survivor's guilt, wishing he had died with his sister like his character did.

@@SputnikSpyglass Note (spoiler-free) that if you do watch Your Name, it is *crucial* that you find a version that translates not only the spoken dialogue, but also stuff that's written down. Some of the essential plot points are found in text messages, letters etc. that are only displayed on screen and not spoken aloud, and for some reason there are subtitle versions out there that don't translate these. I'll be sure to watch your reaction if you do pick this one, as it's one of the best anime films ever made, maybe even the best non-Ghibli one!
